21、It’s a common belief (相信) that fish can’t remember anything for longer than seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that every moment in their lives would be like seeing the world for the first time. But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have much better memories than we used to think.
In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids (丽鱼) to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They took the fish out and then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food.
In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. But there was no clear evidence (证据) until the latest findings.
Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive (生存) in the wild. “If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains (容纳) safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives in danger.” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.
So next time you are watching your pet fish from outside the tank, perhaps you should feel closer to them — they may remember who you are.

22、Political adviser Chen Zhihong suggested the city government think of a complete and unified translation(统一翻译)rules for English signs in Shenzhen.
Before making the suggestion, Chen, vice chairman of Shenzhen Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, did a wide research on the English signs(标识)at major public areas in the city and service providers, such as Futian Railway Station, Shenzhen Book City, Shenzhen Concert Hall, Shekou Port and so on.
“There are a large number of unclear and wrong translations,” said Chen. “The poorly-translated English signs have seriously harmed the image of the city.”
Chen pointed out the main reasons behind this problem. First, there is not enough professional(专业的)guidance. Second, not having a deep understanding of English culture also leads to poor translation. In addition, it is difficult for the public to find ways to report mistakes.
As early as 2010, the Shenzhen Municipal Foreign Affairs Office made a guide for English translations for signs in public spaces in Shenzhen. It provided rules for translating place names and business activities into English. That guide, Chen thought, is no longer enough for the city today. “The guide needs to have more content(内容), such as the standardized translations for business areas, transport hubs and tourist attractions,” Chen said.
He also advised taking citywide action to clear up the wrong and misleading signs through collecting the examples from the public.

On Feb 25 in the Great Hall of the people in Beijing, President Xi Jinping announced China’s “complete victory” in eliminating extreme poverty(消除贫困). China had set a goal of ending poverty by the end of 2020. As the goal was reached, a grand gathering was held in Beijing to mark the nation’s poverty alleviation accomplishments(扶贫成就) and honor model poverty fighters.
China set its poverty line at an annual income of 2,300 yuan in 2010 for each person. By 2020, a person making less than 4,000 yuan a year could be described as living in poverty, according to Xinhua. Over the past eight years, the last 98.99 million people have shaken off poverty, which was one of the goals of the 13th Five-Year Plan(2016-2020). All 832 poor counties(县) and 128,000 villages have also been removed from the poverty list.
The United Nations has set the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (《2030 年可持续发展议程》). China has met its poverty alleviation goal 10 years ahead of schedule. And according to the World Bank, China has helped end 70 percent of poverty worldwide since the late 1970s.
Ordinary people made this achievement possible. Zhang Guimei, 64, created the first free senior high school for girls in China. As the principal(校长) of the Huaping Senior High School for Girls in Lijiang, Yunnan, she helped more than 1,800 students go to college during the past 40 years. The head of a mountain village fought poverty by improving local transportation. Mao Xianglin, 62, is the head of Xiazhuang village. This increased the per capita income(人均收入) to more than 40 times what it was in the 1990s.
These model poverty fighters have worked in many different ways and contributed(做贡献) to China’s success in ending poverty. According to Jeffrey Sachs, a professor at Columbia University, US, China’s success “should inspire the world.”
“(It should) draw on China’s experience, including massive investments(大规模投资)in education, public health and advanced infrastructure(先进的基础设施),” Sachs told China Daily.
