26、A water-proof drone (无人机) is being used by Australian scientists to collect the highly-treasured snot (鼻涕) of migrating whales. The snot is rich with fresh DNA, viruses and bacteria, and is collected by a drone that hovers over the blowholes of humpback whales as they set off their annual journey along Australia’s east coast.
Vanessa Pirotta, a marine biologist at Macquarie University, says that snot indicates the health of the whale. She states, “It is the juicy biological mixture that you see as a humpback whale takes a breath when they surface from the water. It sounds like sounds of sharp breaths as a whale breathes, because, unlike sharks or other fish, they are mammals like humans and they have two openings for breathing on their back as well. So, as they take a breath, there are a lot of lung bacteria coming out from their lungs, which we can collect to provide a brief introduction of whale health.”
Australian researchers have attached a petri dish that is used in scientific tests to a drone which flies through the whale’s nasal mist (鼻腔喷出雾). Vanessa Pirotta added, “As a whale comes to take a breath, you can actually see it coming to the surface on really good weather days. That is the time—the drone lowers, and the petri dish is then opened and the drone is flown through the densest part of the whale snot, collecting the sample in the petri dish. Now once this happens the lid is shut and the drone is flown back to the research vessel and we collect the sample to later process it in the laboratory.”
The research could help to solve one of the mysteries of another magnificent creature of the deep sea—the southern right whale. Its numbers have recovered on Australia’s west coast since hunting was outlawed but its population on the eastern seaboard remains stubbornly low.

27、The Torch Festival (火把节) is a traditional festival which is celebrated among some ethnic groups in southwestern China, such as the Yi, Bai, Hani, Lisu, and Lahu, etc. It usually falls on the 24th or 25th of June, with three days of celebrations. The festival came from worship (崇拜) of fire by ancestors (祖先). For some ethnic groups, it’s a tradition in the festival for elders to share farming experience with young people and educate them about taking care of crops.
During the festival, big torches are made to stand in all villages, with small torches placed in front of the door of each house. When night falls, the torches are lit and the villages are bright. At the same time, people walk around the fields and houses, holding small torches and placing the torches in the field corners. Inside the villages, young people are singing and dancing around the big torches that keep burning throughout the night. Other activities like horse races are also held during the festival.
In a horse race of the Yi people in Yunnan, torches are used to form hurdles for riders to get through. The Hani people in Yunnan traditionally tie fruits to torches with strings. When the strings are broken after the torches are lit, people struggle for the fruits for good luck.
For the Lisu people in Sichuan, the festival is an occasion for holding torch parades. Big torches are carried by teams of people, which is like a fire dragon. If different teams meet, it’s a tradition to exchange the big torches with one another.

28、Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Surely, sometimes we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.
No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad. We miss them very much. But we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.
There’s more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people who don’t have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares about you. If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In order to join the Merchant Marines, I had dropped out of college after my first semester. Using an article from Life magazine as my guide I decided to hitch-hike down to New Orleans and see the world.
My family was relatively poor and my youth had been in the workingman’s section of a large New England mill town. My father and I had a hard time since my mother passed away. As she lay dying, my mother said to me in a weak voice, “Son, remember to ask your father for advice at every juncture of your life.” Yet we seemed more like room-mates rather than father-son. He thought I was foolish for dropping out of school, so I didn’t inform him of my plans.
I left a note on the kitchen table, telling him I was going to New York City for a few days and would be back soon. I walked to a highway near where I lived, stuck my thumb out, and was“on the road”.
My trip to New Orleans was a mistake. The Merchant Marine wasn’t taking on any people for a while. I decided to wait in New Orleans until it did. I lasted over a week, living in a dirty hotel until my money started to run out. I had to stay up in the park for a few days. Life seemed to become a continuous adventure. From New Orleans I went to New York and stayed with a friend for a few weeks, and then went to Martha’s Vineyard, living on the beach in April. Later, I lived in an abandoned house in Nantucket and ended up with a long stop in Boston. There was no word from the Merchant Marine. I felt so desperate.
My close friend Jimmy called me one day and asked me how everything was going. I had to tell him the truth and he persuaded me to go back soon.
