27、When I was in the eighth grade, one caring teacher of mine taught me several useful little techniques. He told me to keep a notebook nearby when I was reading and that I should try to figure out what the main idea of every paragraph was so that I could understand the passages better. It seemed awfully boring at that time, but I decided to give it a try anyway.

It didn’t take long before I started reading a book called How to Read a Book that would completely change how I thought about the written word. Thanks to these techniques, I learned to get the most out of reading. I kept applying them over the years until I finally came up with a lot of little techniques for reading a book.

I also eventually came to learn that there were a lot of different kinds of reading. For example, when I read a Stephen King novel, the interesting plot made me completely relaxed. Then there’s reading to learn new things, which is what I do when I read personal finance books. There’s also reading to understand and grow, which is easily the hardest and the most rewarding. The last kind of reading involves taking a piece of literature or a nonfiction book that you might read for simple pleasure and transforming it into something life-changing, or something that causes you to question some of your deeply-held ideas and beliefs.

How to Read a Book really focuses on the latter two: books that you read to learn about a new topic or to learn a skill, and books that you read to learn about yourself. If you’ve ever been drawn to read to really improve yourself, this book is well worth the time to read even if it’s a bit dry at times. Let’s dig in.

1The writer’s teacher gave him some reading techniques so that __________.

A. he could become interested in reading

B. he could increase his reading speed

C. he could learn more from what he read

D. he could remember all the books he read

2The writer said that he read a Stephen King novel for _________.

A. fun and pleasure   B. personal development

C. learning new things   D. changing his former beliefs

3The writer wrote the passage to _________.

A. encourage readers to improve themselves by wide reading

B. thank the teacher who once helped him improve his reading

C. give an introduction to a very practical finance book

D. advise people to read a personal development book

28、Bottle gardens are loved by many people. What’s a bottle garden? A bottle garden is exactly what it sounds like: a tiny garden planted in an object like a bottle._ 【1】According to professionals, the oldest bottle garden in the world was first created in 1960.

【2】There are several characteristics that make a bottle garden fun to own and great to create. Whether you’re short on outdoor gardening space or just want an eye-catching indoor garden, bottle gardens are a great way to grow many of your favorite plants. Moreover, they help recycle (回收利用) bottles and are easy to create.

By following some tips, you’ll have your bottle garden planted and thriving (茁壮成长) in no time. The first step in creating a bottle garden is selecting (挑选) the bottle. Clear bottles can allow the most sunlight to enter. 【3】

Then you should keep in mind that bottles with openings big enough to fit your hand through can make planting easier. 【4】 Likewise, you could choose a bottle and simply cut an opening for your plants to fit in. If you choose to reuse a bottle, wash it completely before adding plants.

When the bottle is ready, put inside some rich soil and plants suitable for a bottle garden. Once you grow the plants in the way you like, remember to place your bottle in a bright space which won’t have direct sunlight. East-facing windows often work well for this purpose. 【5】Then you’ll just need to water them and watch out for signs of disease or crowding inside the bottle.

A.How do the bottle gardens work?

B.Such gardens don’t have a very long history.

C.They make thoughtful and eco-friendly gifts.

D.Why would anyone want to grow a garden in a bottle?

E.If you choose a colored bottle, select plants that prefer low levels of light.

F.If not, you’ll have to use tools to work the soil and plants inside the bottle.

G.You can also use a grow light if your home doesn’t have any suitable windows.

29、Rachel’s artwork had been accepted into an internationally famous art exhibition after she had experienced many years of rejection and lack of recognition. After receiving the news, I could hardly contain myself and decided to celebrate it with her immediately. I took my handbag quickly and raced to the garage. Then I pulled the car door open, jumped into the driver’s seat, and shut the car door. I started the car and pedaled (踩踏板) to the metal. I was eager to go!

I was backing up, backing up when I heard and felt a BOOM! I looked around and realized that I didn’t press the button to open the garage doors first and blew out the garage door panels (嵌板)! I jumped out of the car and felt relieved to discover that I was able to push the panels back into the garage doors so they looked normal. I covered up the scene, got back into my car, and left for Rachel’s home.

That evening, my teenage son had been playing a game of solo catch to which, in the past, I wouldn’t agree, for the ball made some ugly dents (凹痕) on the garage doors. But this time when he threw the ball against one of the garage doors, he didn’t just dent the door—he demolished it!

He called me, “Mom, I’m so sorry. I know you told me not to play ball against the garage doors. I didn’t think I would break them, though.” Though I had wanted to let my son take the blame to teach him a lesson, I couldn’t do it. Besides, he wasn’t the only one who Iearned a lesson that day.
