Ni Shuxian always catches people’s eyes when she plays skateboard in Yinchuan Forest Park in Ningxia. The 46-year-old railway worker moves easily on her board and can even do 360° spins.

Ni first took up the sport when she was 38 and she has been practicing very hard since then. She goes to the park to play skateboard from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. every day before going to work. “Skateboarding has become part of my life,” Ni said. As for how she started the hobby, Ni said, “When I went to the sea some years ago and saw people surfing, I fell in love with it at once. I thought it was the most wonderful sport.”

But there is no sea in Ningxia, so Ni had to “surf” on land. She taught herself by watching videos and taking online classes. She quickly learned the skills and was able to skateboard easily after a week of practice.

Ni is not only popular among young people, but also among middle-aged and old people. She now has a group of six members. The women in the group all say they feel more active after taking up skateboarding. The sport makes them happy and healthy. “We will not stop skateboarding,” Ni added.

This month inTravelersCorner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.

Mariko Okada – Tokyo

My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned many English songs and lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.

Carla Fonseca – Rio de Janeiro

I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!

Alvin Chen – Hong Kong

Studying in New Zealand was a fun experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week——with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went.

26、“What’s success here?” When Finnish children are asked this question, the answer goes like this, “When you get a job, find a wife and have some money, you’re successful”, or “Everyone is pretty, and nobody is the most outstanding.”

This is a country where people are so confident about their education. They even say, “If you ask me which school is the best, it’s the one that’s closest to my home.” But when you walk into the local school, you might think you’ve arrived at an amusement park by mistake.

In Japanese kindergartens (幼儿园), children must run very fast and climb up and down every morning to wake up their bodies. Japanese children are taught to keep the group order and follow rules since they’re in kindergartens.

But there are also worries that Japanese children might lose their personalities (个性) under such education. Japanese are always under great pressure in education and social relationships. There even is a new job in this country—Tear Therapist. This job is to help people cry.

And even in Finland, there are still locals doubting about their education. Some feel that Finland has lost its competitiveness because of its high welfare (福利). A headmaster at a local school thinks that the children are living a leisured life now with watching TV and playing games. They have lost the hardworking spirit of Finns.

五、短文填空(共1题,共 5分)

28、阅读下面短文,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Dear Sir,

I think it is important for teenagers to learn how to do chores and help their parents 1 housework. It is not enough to just get good grades at school. 2 (child) these days depend on their parents too much. They are always asking, “Could you get this for me?” 3“Could you help me with that?” Doing chores helps to develop children's independence and teaches them how to look after4 (them). It also helps them to understand the idea of fairness5 (easy). Since they live in one house with their parents, they should know that everyone should do their part in 6 (keep) it clean and tidy. Our neighbors' son was a 7(nine) grade student who was good at every subject, but he had no idea 8 to take care of himself. As a result, he often 9 (fall) ill and his grades dropped. The 10(early) kids learn to be independent, the better it is for their future.

Yours,

Mr. Smith

I did not understand how these things were going to help.

Three years ago, I hit a low point. Once I saw a pair of empty eyes looking at me through the mirror, I knew I was at my breaking point(极限). So, I took the advice. I went for a walk—with the _______ that it would somehow change my life.

I embraced(拥抱)the fresh air everyone seemed to be talking about. But I was just as sad as I was before. I went on a walk every single day for more than a month. Some days I could hardly make it outside, but I _______ to push through. I took a picture every time I went. I think I was trying to make an effort.

One day, the _______ thing happened. I found myself smiling. I realized I had _______ waited all morning to go on this walk. What I once hated had become the best part of my day. I found myself _______ to be outside. I just danced along the trails(小路), stopped to look at the beautiful blue skies and listened to music.

I’m glad I took pictures because there was a noticeable difference in my face. I slowly started to look less tired. I don’t know why I _______ to go on that walk for so long. I guess I didn’t want to believe that something small and seemingly meaningless could actually ________ my physical and mental health.
