四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、When I signed up to volunteer at a local hospital last year, I didn’t have any real expectations. I decided to do it mainly because my friends were planning to do volunteer work.

On my first day, I was told to stand next to an information sign to answer any question that came my way. On the third day, I noticed a wheelchair speeding in my direction. A young boy about six with the biggest smile I have ever seen was sitting in it. The boy stopped in front of me and said, “Who are you? You’re in my hospital and I don’t even know you!”

The boy with his irresistible(不可抗拒的) smile completely made me relax. I introduced myself and explained that I was new. Then, he began to tell me about his medical history, his favorite football player and other things about his life. From our conversation, I knew he was there for his weekly check-up. He wasn’t afraid of being in hospital because he believed the doctor would cure(治愈) his legs at last. Our conversation changed my view of young children, illness and hospitals.

This led to my becoming a volunteer in the children’s department and being a positive(积极的) person later, and also to my decision to study medicine at university and become a doctor. Volunteering might not do the same for everyone, but in my case, it was a life-changer.

【1】Why did the author volunteer at a local hospital?

A.Because his parents asked him to do that.

B.Because he was influenced by his friends.

C.Because he wanted to experience a different life.

D.Because he loved volunteering to help others.

【2】How did the boy feel when he saw the author at first?

A.Afraid.

B.Nervous.

C.Surprised.

D.Excited.

【3】What influence did the little boy have on the author?

A.It made his volunteer work more interesting.

B.It helped him learn information about the disabled.

C.It changed his view of young children, illness and hospitals.

D.It encouraged him to do more volunteer work in different fields.

【4】What can we know about the little boy?

A.He knew many doctors in the hospital.

B.He showed people the way in the hospital.

C.He fought with illness positively.

D.He wanted to be a doctor in the future.

【5】Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

25、   Bono, the lead singer of U2, a popular Irish rock band, once said that “music can change the world because it can change people.” This is what a group of music therapists(治疗专家) here are trying to do with autistic(自闭症的) children in Nepal. “Music therapy can be helpful to children with autism(自闭症). The greatest challenge is to build trust in the relationship between the therapist and the child,” Kendra Gandharba, a music therapist told Xinhua Wednesday as Nepal joined the world in celebrating Autism Awareness Day.

When Rahul was three years old, he was still unable to speak and to interact(互动) with people. It was only then that his mother realized that there was something wrong with her son. After talking with doctors she came to know that Rahul, now six years old, is an autistic child.

Experts(专家) believe that the autism spectrum disorder(自闭症谱系障碍) presents itself in the first three years. The condition is the result of a neurological(神经病学的) disorder that has an influence on usual brain function(功能). It influences social interaction and communication skills. Several studies suggest that children with autism show their feelings and take part in activities with others during music therapy lessons. Now there are 15 autistic children getting better from the power of music through the lesson every week in Nepal. “With music therapy we work on five developmental areas: communication, awareness, motor movement, social skills and feelings,” Gandharba, one of Nepal’s music therapists, explained.

In the music therapy room, Xinhua met Shyam as he sat in front of the keyboard. Smiling at the therapist, the 10-year-old boy started playing the keyboard. Playing and sharing instruments, taking part in music games and singing are just a few ways through which the therapist tries to interact with autistic children. Autistic children are free to pick the musical instrument of their choice.

Music therapy, however, is still at an embryonic stage in Nepal where autism remains a taboo(禁忌) in the country's rural areas(郊区). “In villages I have seen people with mental or physical disabilities being treated like animals,” Gandharba said, adding that efforts should be made to introduce music therapy in Nepal’s rural areas.

The organization, Autism Care Nepal(ACN), hosted different events on World Autism Awareness Day to educate, create awareness among parents about the rights of children with autism.

1What’s the greatest challenge for therapists to help autistic children by using music therapy?

A.To force them to talk with others. B.To play and share toys with autistic children.

C.To attract them to play music games. D.To make them willing to believe in therapists.

2The underlined word “embryonic” in the fifth paragraph probably means “____”.

A.early B.easy C.active D.amazing

3Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.The autistic children learn how to interact with each other during music therapy lessons.

B.The autistic children learn how to show their own feelings during music therapy lessons.

C.The music therapy can enable every autistic child to play musical instruments well.

D.The music therapy can improve the communication skills of children with autism.

4Which of the following is the main idea of this article?

A.Music can change the world because it can change people.

B.Music therapy may be useful to children with autism in Nepal.

C.Efforts should be made to introduce music therapy in rural areas.

D.Music therapists helped autistic children in Nepal with music therapy.

26、   Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.

Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a “telepresence” system(远程遥控系统)—allowing users to control the heating and locks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, health care and government services. Around the city, escalators(自动扶梯)will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.

The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.

About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be smarter to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

【1】According to the text, living in a “smart” city ________.

A.is not a green way

B.will be far from you

C.will soon become true

D.is completely impossible

A.A city of the future.

B.A meeting in Songdo.

C.A plan to build a house,

D.A report on public health.

【3】Which company offers the great mind to build Songdo?

A.Cisco.

B.IMB.

C.Siemens.

D.Microsoft.

【4】Dan Hill thinks that making cities smarter is one way to ________.

A.drive people out of cities

B.control the world’s population

C.develop his own company

D.deal with the cities’ coming problems

【5】Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A.Future Education

B.Smart Cities

C.Government Services

D.Famous Companies

27、   Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. That is to say, it appears to be turning counterclockwise (逆时针) rapidly when viewed from above the North Pole. But what if Earth started spinning the other way?

Scientists from Germany have made a computer simulation in which Earth spins in the opposite direction—clockwise when viewed from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and geography on Earth, Live Science reported.

As Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction, it shapes certain ocean currents(洋流). The direction of ocean currents, together with winds, produces different weathers around the globe. But a backward spin changes the ocean currents and winds. Western areas of the lands on Earth cool down as the eastern parts warm up. Winters become even colder in northwestern Europe, while eastern Russia becomes warmer than before. Rain no longer falls on the planet's wettest places.

Another result of a backward spin is that Earth becomes greener. Scientists found that global desert(沙漠) areas reduce from 42 million square kilometers to 31 million square kilometers. This may have something to do with the changing weather. Therefore, you can see rich green landscapes from Central Africa to the Middle East, which are mostly covered with deserts now. More surprisingly, the Sahara Desert becomes an oasis.

However, deserts don't disappear. They just appear in some places in which they never appeared before. Deserts would cover North America, where countries like the United States and Canada lie. Sand dunes would replace the Amazon rainforest in South America.

A backward spin would keep the main features of Earth's geography, such as the size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans. But it would change the interactions between circulating air, ocean and geography lead scientist Florian Ziemen told Live Science.

1Which of the following sentences can be put in the blank of Paragraph 3?

A.Anyway deserts cover the planet. B.Therefore, the weather is different.

C.However the positions of oceans changes. D.Surprisingly the area of lands is larger.

2The underlined word "oasis" in Paragraph 4 means________.

A.a place in a desert where there is sand and stones all over

B.a rich land in a desert where the water table is near the surface

C.a large body of salt water partially enclosed by land or an ocean

D.a large smooth area which is over 500 metres above the sea level

3What would a backward spin bring to Earth?

A.The direction of ocean currents and winds would be different.

B.Rain would no longer fall on western areas of the lands on Earth.

C.Deserts would become larger and cover the planet's wettest places.

D.The size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans would be changed.

4The passage is most probably taken from a magazine on ________.

A.history B.travel C.entertainment D.geography
