24、Erasers and pencils are good friends. But the pencil came first. Along time ago, when people needed to erase (擦除) pencil marks, they used bread.
This changed on April 15, 1770. On that day, a British scientist named Joseph Priestley discovered rubber (橡胶). He found rubber could erase pencil marks easily.
In the same year, Edward Naime invented the first rubber eraser. He was a British engineer. One day, he erased something with rubber instead of bread. He found it was very useful. Then he began to sell rubber erasers.
But rubber, like bread, would go bad overtime. In 1839, Charles Goodyear made rubber erasers last longer.
In 1858, an American Hymen Lipman put erasers on the ends of pencils. We still use this kind of eraser today.
How does an eraser work? When you write with a pencil, it leaves small particles of carbon (碳颗粒) on the paper. An eraser is sticky (粘的). It can pick up the particles and move them away. Bread, tape (胶条) or any other sticky thing can work as well.
Did you know? There is a Rubber Eraser Day. It’s a day to celebrate the invention of erasers. It falls on April 15 every year.

Now people are trying to make the world a better place for birds to live in. People in China start the Bird Loving Week. Students from all parts of the country have been doing something to care for birds.
Meng Yiru, a 16-year-old student from Nanyang Model High School in Shanghai, asked people to protect birds: Never put birds in cages. Go to visit them in the wild if you really love them. "I'll never forget the sparrow(麻雀) I kept in a cage," said Meng. “It stopped eating after I caught it and soon died.” Meng and her classmates put many of their ideas in their 300-word report to ask people to take better care of birds.
China is the home of more than 1, 000 kinds of birds because the country is large and has almost every weather type to suit (适合) them.
But not everyone knows how to take good care of them. Some cut down trees and destroy the birds' homes. This has made the number of the birds go down quickly. A study shows that one out of eight birds, more than 1, 200 kinds, in the world could die out. This includes 95% of albatrosses(信天翁) and 60% of cranes. Some birds you see every day, like pigeons and parrots, are also in danger!
To help them, people have set up 7,500 reserves(自然保护区) which are suitable and safe for the birds. In China, there are big reserves like the ones near the Dongting Lake in Hunan and the Poyang Lake in Hunan and the Poyang Lake in Jiangxi. Is there anything that you can do for birds? Take care of their homes. Feed them with something delicious. Well, think it over and begin to do it now!

“Now there’re a few important points in young James’ story. One, his father cries Coo-ee before he sees him. Two, he talks about a rat (老鼠). I think young James is telling the truth (真相).”
“So why did Mr. McCarthy shout Coo-ee then?”
“Well, he was not shouting Coo-ee to his son. It was by chance that James heard. The Coo-ee was to call the person he was meeting. But Coo-ee is an Australian cry, Australians usually say it when they meet to catch attention. Perhaps Mr. McCarthy was meeting someone from Australia.”
“I see. But why did he talk about a rat, then?” I asked.
Holmes took a piece of paper from his pocket and put it on the table.
“This is a map of Australia,” he said. He put his hand over part of the map. “Now, Watson, what can you read there?” he asked me.
“ARAT,” I read.
“And now?” Holmes moved his hand.
“BALLARAT,” I read.
“Yes. That was the word the dead man said. It’s a place called Ballarat. His son only heard the ‘rat’ part of the word. Old Mr. McCarthy was trying to say where his murderer was from, the town of Ballarat. The grey cloak is point No. 3. If James is telling the truth, there was a grey cloak (斗篷). So now we have an Australian from Ballarat with a grey cloak.”
“Great!” I replied.
“And it’s someone who lives nearby, as the Boscombe Pool isn’t open to the public. Only people from the farm nearby or the Turner house can go there,” said Holmes.

27、Stephen Hawkins was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St. Albans—a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class. After leaving school, Hawking went first to Oxford University where he studied physics, then he went to Cambridge University where he studied cosmology. As he himself admits, he didn’t work hard. He was a very lazy student, and did very little work. However, he still got good marks.
It was at the age of 20 that Hawking first noticed something was wrong with him. He started to bump(碰撞) into things. When he visited his family at Christmas time, his mother was so worried that she made him see a doctor. Hawking was sent to hospital for tests. Finally, the result came back. Doctors said they had no way to help him. He would die before he was 23.
At first, Hawking became very sad, after a while, though, he began to see his life in a different way. As he later wrote, “Before my illness was diagnosed(诊断), I had been very bored with life. There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital, I suddenly realized that there were a lot of worthwhile things I could do.” Hawking married, found a job at Cambridge University, and had three children. He also went on to do some of the most important scientific research.
Today, Hawking still works at Cambridge University as a professor. He strongly believes that his story shows that nobody, however bad their situation is, should lose hope. “Life is not fair,” he once said. “You just have to do the best you can in your own situation.”
