24、   It was the perfect(完美的) weather for leaf watching, and my housemate Julie and I planned to spend the weekend with our friends in the North Georgia mountains.

“Don’t you want to come along?” Julie asked her 15-year-old son Mark. “Enjoy the leaves by yourselves.” he told her. “I’ll be fine staying home by myself.”

Julie and I drove there in my car after work on Friday. On Saturday morning we hiked along the mountainside and enjoyed the beautiful colors. All of a sudden, I had a terrible feeling. “Go home” a voice seemed to shout to me. I couldn’t explain it, but I didn’t want to be there anymore. I just wanted to go home. “Carol, calm down. You’re being silly.” Julie said. But the voice just got louder. “I’ve got to leave” I said. “If you want to stay, you can get a ride back with someone else tomorrow.” Julie stood up. “No, I’ll go with you,” she said. We almost didn’t talk during the two-hour trip back. I felt very guilty(内疚的).

Finally, we pulled in. The lights were on in the house, but something was strange. The windows seemed to be fogged up(被烟雾笼罩). Julie opened the door and smoke poured out. “Mark!” she shouted. “Mark!” We rushed inside and found him asleep on the sofa. Julie shook him awake. I quickly found the source(根源) of the smoke a pillow(枕头) too close to the fireplace. I then took it outside and threw water on it. Mark had built a fire to keep warm, and some embers(灰烬) had flown out. The whole house could have gone up if we hadn’t gotten there just then!

25、   A friend and I once got lost on the top of Glyder Fawr, a mountain in North Wales. It was snowing and we couldn’t see more than two meters in front of us. Luckily we met some more experienced walkers. We followed them and returned safely. Meeting other walkers on quite a cold January day wasn’t really so surprising, because walking is the UK’s most popular sport.

Many people believe that the popular walking brought about 20 special long paths(小路) for walking in Britain. The longest is the Southwest Coast path(1014km). The most exciting one is the West Highland Way in Scotland because it passes through mountain areas. It ends at the bottom of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.

There are also a few basic rules(规则) you should follow when you are walking on the paths. Don’t drop litter, keep your dogs around you if there are farm animals in the area, and always stay on the path.

Remember that British weather can change very quickly, especially in the north and west of the country. If you are in Wales, Scotland or the north of England, you would need to carry enough food and water with you. It is also important to wear warm and thick clothes. Carry a map and compass so that you won’t get lost. These paths are the best way to enjoy Britain’s wonderful countryside.

1The writer thinks it’s _______ to meet other walkers in cold weather in Britain.

A.strange B.terrible C.common D.boring

26、     Elephants are the largest animals on land. For a long time, they are very helpful. They carry big trees, take people from place to place, and are even used in wars.

Some people think it’s not easy to hurt an elephant because its skin is thick and hard. In fact, that’s wrong. Sometimes, a needle (针) can also be very dangerous for the elephant.

People say elephants are afraid of mice. This is wrong, too. In fact, elephants have very poor eyesight, so they usually cannot see a mouse even if one comes very close to them. If a person has a good memory, people will say that he has an elephant memory. However, up to now, no study shows that elephants have a better memory than any other animal.

People also believe that when it is time for elephants to die, they will hide themselves in a so-called “elephant graveyard”. Often, hunters try to find such places to get ivories, but few people really find places like that. In fact, when elephants are old or get sick, they will stay in deep and secret caves (山洞) until they get better or die.

【1】What can’t elephants help people do?

B.Different countries have different elephants.
