二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Two musicians from Germany are using robotic equipment to add sounds to their performances. The two-man band performs with a robot that can play several musical instruments at the same time. The robot can sound like a guitar, keyboard, drum or other percussion instrument. When performing, members of the band provide many of the sounds, but others are controlled by a computer. Once connected to wires and set up, instruments can play on their own.

One of the instruments was created from a long, self-turning wooden stick that sits on top of a microphone stand. The stick contains long strings. They are tied on each end. The strings are connected to a small wooden ball. As the stick turns, the ball hits a block on the floor, creating a sound.

The two-man band, called Joasihno, recently performed at the South by Southwest Conference and Music Festival in Austin, Texas. They describe their electronic sound as “psychedelic (迷幻的) machine” music. “Actually, we call it a psychedelic robot orchestra,” said Cico Beck, one of the creators of the group.

The group’s other member, Nico Siereg, says playing in an experimental band with robots is not the same as playing in a traditional one. “It’s a little bit different because you also have in mind that there are machines playing around you, so there’s no reaction from them,” he said. But Siereg said that in some ways, the robots actually help him improve his performance. Since the self-playing instruments are programmed, he sometimes feels freer to center on what he is playing, and at times to even play without preparation.

The musician says he can imagine similar technology having a greater influence on many different kinds of music in the future. “Technology is like a very important tool that even, very often, it’s also a very important part of inspiration,” he said. But he also expressed hope that “real music won’t die.”

In addition to performing recently in Texas, Joashihno has been busy putting on shows in Europe and in Canada. The band hopes its high-tech music “experiment” will keep reaching new people and pleasing the ears of its fans.

1According to the first paragraph, the robotic equipment __________.

A.is operated by a wooden stick

B.serves as a whole band

C.fuctions as musical instruments

D.is battery-powered

2What does Nico Siereg think of playing music with robots?

A.It is better than playing with human being.

B.It is just a pity that the robots cannot respond to him.

C.It has a negative effect on his performance because robots distract him.

D.It is strange for him to have some machines playing around him.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Robots will replace musical instruments.

B.This new style of performance has become popular around the world.

C.One member of the band doesn’t think playing with robots is real music.

D.The machines are programmed to create many sounds.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Real Music Won’t Die

B.Adding New Blood to Traditional Music

C.High Technology Is Applied to Music

D.Robots Will Wipe Out Human Beings

22、   American Grace Brown is keeping busy during her first year of high school. She studies all the required subjects, such as English, history and mathematics, as well as taking classes in Latin. She also sings in a music group and plays the piano. The school day lasts from about eight o’clock in the morning to three in the afternoon. But because of her many activities, she has no time for a class in physical education, or PE.

So Grace is getting school credit for virtual PE. She wears a fitness tracker called Fitbit that the high school provided. She wears the Fitbit on her arm while doing exercises lasting 30 minutes or longer three times a week. Her computer has a software program that records her activity which she can present for credit.

A PE teacher may not be guiding the Fitbit-wearing students in person. But teachers do lead students’ work by setting goals such as fat burn, using the technology as their eyes and ears. “We certainly exercise more in online PE,” Brown said. “There’s a lot of standing around in regular PE. Online, I do much harder workouts.”

Grace’s mother, Rhonda Brown, remembers how hard PE class and softball games were for her because of blindness in one eye. She would like to see Fairfax County give students permission to avoid PE if they play school sports.

“We’re so stuck in the traditional classroom setting. These kids are burning 2,000 calories (卡路里) during a practice and more at every game.” Rhonda said. “I wish the schools would catch up with the times.”

It is not clear how many schools are supporting the trend. Technology and the collection of any student data always raise the problem of student privacy concerns. “There is a difference between physical activity and physical education,” said Chris Hersl. Physical activity is great for the body. We want everybody to move, but physical education is a class where students are taught how to move their body and the social context in which to do that.”

1Why does Grace take virtual PE?

A.She is busy with school activities.

B.She prefers something new.

C.She has interest in wearable technology.

D.She loves being tracked while doing PE.

2What do PE teachers do while their students are doing virtual PE?

A.Provide some guidance in the flesh.

B.Help students get good personal exercise.

C.Teach students how to wear a fitness tracker.

D.Monitor students with technology all day.

3Why did Rhonda always avoid playing games at school?

A.She couldn’t catch up with the times.

B.She was often stuck in traditional exercise.

C.She couldn’t burn 2,000 calories per game.

D.She was blind in one of her eyes.

4What does Chris stress in his words?

A.Wearable technology threatens students’ privacy.

B.Physical activities need students’ teamwork.

C.PE is also about students’ social connection.

D.Online PE collects a lot of students’ data.

23、   About a billion birds die from flying into buildings each year in North America. Suspicions have been that birds may regard the open areas behind glass as safe passageways. Or they may mistake the reflected trees for the real thing.

Researchers would like to reduce collisions, which requires a solid understanding about what makes a bird more or less likely to die by crashing into a building in the first place.

“There was relatively little known at a broad scale. Previous studies were at one small study site.' Jared Elmore, a graduate student in natural resource ecology and management at Oklahoma State University. So he and his colleagues used a previously created data set of building collisions for birds at 40 sites throughout Mexico, Canada and the U.S.

The first finding was obvious: bigger buildings with more glass kill more birds. But the details were more remarkable. "We found that life history predicted collisions. Migrants(候鸟), insect-eaters and woodland-inhabiting species collided more than their counterparts(同类).”

Most migratory species travel at night, when lights near buildings can distract or disorient(使迷失方向)them. And Elmore thinks that insect-eating birds might be attracted to buildings because their insect prey(猎物)is attracted to the lights. He suspects that woodland species get tooled by the reflections of trees and bushes in the windows. The results are in the journal Conservation Biology.

By understanding which birds are more likely to collide with buildings, researchers can perhaps determine the best way to adapt buildings, or their lighting, to help prevent such accidents. And by knowing risks, along with migration timing and behavior, building managers can better predict when birds are at their greatest danger - and improve lighting strategics accordingly.

Elmore's next project will use radar to help predict bird migrations. " I think that would maybe go a long way in terms of providing information to people, to the public, to building managers, on when they can get the most benefit in terms of lights-out policies."

【1】What is the possible reason for birds' crashing into buildings?

A.They didn't see the buildings.

B.They took reflections for reality.

C.They assumed the windows to be open.

D.They considered buildings as safe routes.

【2】What is Jared Elmore's study different from the previous ones?

A.It created a new data set.

B.It went beyond national borders.

C.It covered a wider range of sites.

D.I’ll studied some specific bird species.

【3】What was the most noticeable finding of Jared Elmore's study?

A.Migratory species travel at night.

B.Birds tend to be misled by glasses.

C.Bigger buildings cause more collisions.

D.Birds living habits give rise to collisions.

【4】Which of the following can help reduce bird collision?

A.Adjust the lightening system.

B.Attach radars to each building.

C.Adopt strict lights-out policies.

D.Ban using glasses on buildings.

24、   Girls are doing better than ever. Don’t let the pandemic block them.

For much of human history and in many places, girls were considered property. Or, at best, subordinate people, required to obey their fathers until the day they had to start obeying their husbands. Few people thought it worthwhile to educate them. Even fewer imagined that a girl could grow up to govern Germany, run the IMF or invent a vaccine.

In most of the world that vision of girlhood now seems not merely old-fashioned but unimaginably remote. In field after field girls have caught up with boys. Globally, young women now outnumber young men at university. The speed of change has been violent.

When societies handle girlhood well, the knock-on effects are astonishing. A girl who finishes secondary school is less likely to become a child bride or a teenager-age mother. Education boosts earning power and widens choices, so she is less likely to be poor or to suffer domestic abuse.

And she will pass on considerable advantages to later generation. A recent study by Citigroup and Plan International estimated that, if a group of emerging economies ensured that 100% of their girls completed secondary school, it could lead to a lasting boost to their GDP of 10% by 2030.

The COVID-19 pandemic could block progress for girls in poor countries, or even reverse it. During previous disasters, they have often suffered most. When Ebola forced west African schools to close in 2014,many girls dropped out, never went back and ended up pregnant or as child laborers. UNICEF warns that something similar could happen with COVID-19—but on a larger scale.

The risk of going backward is real. So it is crucial that, even if governments of poor countries have to tighten their belts, spending on education and girls should be a top priority.

【1】The underlined word “subordinate” in the second paragraph could possibly mean ________.

A.lower

B.best

C.selfless

D.adorable

【2】According to the text, proper girlhood management is significant because ________.

A.girls have suffered great unfairness

B.girls can perform better than boys in many fields

C.girls play a vital and profound role in the society

D.girls shouldn’t become child brides or teenager age mothers

A.show its relation with COVID 19

B.stress its bad effect on girls

C.arouse public attention to girls

D.serve as a helpful reference.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards girl’s growth?
