二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Grandpa Nybakken loved life especially when he could play a trick on somebody. At those times, his large Norwegian frame shook with laughter while he pretended innocent surprise, exclaiming, “Oh, forevermore!” But on a cold Saturday in downtown Chicago, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him, and grandpa wasn’t laughing.

Grandpa worked as a carpenter. On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage abroad. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back to the church. His search proved fruitless.

Suddenly, he realized what had happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His brand new glasses were heading for China!

The Great Depression was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.

“It’s not fair,” he told God as he drove home in frustration. “I’ve been very faithful in giving of my time and money to your work, and now this.”

Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather’s small church in Chicago. Grandpa and his family sat in their usual seats among the small congregation (教堂会众).

“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year.”

“Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses.Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my co-workers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your boxes arrived. When my staff removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses lying on the top.” After a long pause, he continued, “Folks, when I tried on the glasses, it was as though they had been custom-made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”

The people listened, happy for the amazing glasses. But the director surely must have confused their church with another, they thought, there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.

But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized the Master Carpenter had used him in an extraordinary way.

23、   The cracked (有裂缝的) step four years ago was the start of it. That day, I awoke tired—the children were tiny and needing so much—and I had a golden afternoon of rest ahead, my mother stepping in to allow me to catch up on my sleep. I dropped them off and drove home—the sun shining and my bed signaling. As I was about to enter the house, I caught sight of a deep crack beneath my feet.

Without thinking, I turned around, walked back to the car and drove to a DIY store. Four hours later, I had all the tools, had mixed my own cement (水泥), filled in the crack and repaired the foundation. Perfect. As I stood up to take a photo of my handiwork, I realized that I was trembling. I’d forgotten my shot at a nice long nap, and my children were already on their way home. That sleep... that promise to self was broken, because I had focused, instead, on the crack in the step.

Suddenly, everything started to hurt. My head, my throat, my back. I couldn’t stop shaking. What earned then is that when we break the promises we make to our bodies they will not be silenced. This is when we overwork and overthink to the point of breaking down. Ironically (讽刺地), for many of us, it is only when we have no choice— when we fall ill—that we learn to listen. For me, when that crack ended in a hospital stay which sent me to bed for two unmoving weeks while my body worked to clear two different infections, the lesson is ever present. I did it to myself—a whole twisted spin on DIY.

Sadly it took another two ridiculous DIY projects to finally get through. The cracks will never be fully filled. Focus, then, on your own inner core the feeding of that light, that fire and that strength.

1What made the author so sleepy in the first place?

A.Taking care of the kids. B.Visiting her mother.

C.Doing the housework. D.Dealing with DIY projects.

2How did the author feel as soon as she finished her repair work?

A.Regretful. B.Upset.

C.Proud. D.Thankful.

3What can be implied from Paragraph 3?

A.Our health is ignored deliberately.

B.Our body will respond to what we do.

C.The author took her mother’s advice.

D.The author stayed in hospital for two weeks.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To present a way to fill a crack.

B.To show the danger of DIY.

C.To stress the importance of sleep.

D.To encourage focusing on oneself.

24、   We moved into a beautiful twostory old house. The house was built in 1956. It was repaired in 2003.

At first, really small things began to happen. They didn’t make me believe that something was wrong, but as time went on, things started becoming stranger and stranger. Early something was missing, and later on it would be found somewhere else. I just thought I had forgotten where I put it, or perhaps my daughter was playing around with things. Then later on I would hear strange sounds when nobody was at home but me. Yet it was an old house, and sometimes old houses did make little noises, so again, I didn’t really mind.

Then things that I couldn’t explain started happening. It was last November and I was at home alone cleaning the house. When I was sweeping the kitchen floor, I felt a very cold wind blowing my hair. I thought the kitchen window must have been opened, but when I checked it, it was closed. The windows were new, and there was no way any cold air came in.

We all felt very strange and moved away from there in October, 2014. I was never really frightened. It was just strange, like something or someone was trying to get my attention or something.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Thank you so much for taking the time to apply for the position,” the email read, “Your application has not been successful. We wish you every success in securing a suitable position in the future.”

I received the email two weeks after interviewing for a job. When I read it, I felt disappointed and angry — not just because I hadn’t gotten the job. I was disappointed because I’d spent days preparing for the interview, but in the end, I didn’t even know why I wasn’t successful. “How can I adapt my job search approach if I don’t know what went wrong?” I thought. How I hoped that someone could tell me how to do it well in the interview to be accepted by interviewers.

The disappointment came to me again a few months after I received another job rejection email. After applying for a job at a consulting company, I spent months working my way through the whole recruiting (招聘) and interview process before getting a phone call from a company representative. “Unfortunately, we have decided to offer the job to someone else,” the voice said. Again I felt upset. But the conversation wasn’t over. “Would you like to hear feedback (反馈) from us?” the voice asked. I immediately said “yes”.

The representative went on to tell me I hadn’t clearly expressed my motivation for applying for the position and why I wanted to work for the company. The feedback was tough to hear, but I quickly realized they were right. After completing my Ph.D. in Germany, my top priority had been to find a position in Poland, where I grew up. As a result, I wasn’t very selective about what I applied for; I pursued any job opportunity that broadly fitted my skills and interests. The job at the consulting company was something I was technically capable of doing, but I didn’t feel passionate about it — and that clearly showed in the interview process.
