二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、You may have seen a talking parrot on a TV show, in a movie, or even in someone’s home. The parrot has learned to copy sounds that people make. Birds are not the only animals that can copy the noises they hear. Dolphins, bats, and some apes also copy sounds. Now we can add elephants to this list of copycats.

Dr. Joyce Poole is a zoologist. She studies the sounds of elephants. While she was in Kenya, she would hear strange noises made by Mlaika after sunset. Mlaika was a 10-year-old African elephant.

Mlaika lived near a highway. Dr. Poole says, “I could not tell the difference between Mlaika’s call and the distant truck noise.” She and other scientists studied Mlaika’s sounds. It turned out that Mlaika was copying the sounds of the trucks driving by. Why would Mlaika copy trucks that she heard going by on the highway? Animals that are able to copy sounds may enjoy practicing new sounds. When they are kept outside of their natural environment, they may copy unusual sounds. That may be why an elephant would copy the sound of a truck.

“Mlaika was not the only copycat elephant,” Dr. Poole says. Calimero is a 23-year-old male African elephant. He spent 18 years with two female Asian elephants. Asian elephants make chirping sounds (sounds made by birds) to talk with one another. African elephants usually do not make chirping sounds. But Calimero now does. He is copying his Asian elephant friends. Dr. Poole says that elephants need to form bonds with their family and friends. She says, “They make sounds to communicate with each other. When they are separated, they use sounds to keep in contact.”

Parrots, dolphins, humans, and elephants show that being a copycat is one way that animals and people make new friends and keep old ones.

【1According to the passage, what does Mlaika copy?

A. The sound of people.   B. The sound of trucks.

C. The sound of Calimero.  D. The sound of birds.

【2Why is Calimero mentioned in the passage?

A. To clarify the meaning of copycat elephants.

B. To show the cleverness of African elephants.

C. To add another example of copycat elephants.

D. To introduce a special life skill of Asian elephants.

【3From paragraph 4, we can know ________.

A. how long it takes for an elephant to learn a new sound

B. why the African elephant can make chirping sounds

C. why the Asian elephants make noises after sunset

D. how Asian and African elephants are alike

【4According to the passage, why do some animals like to be copycats?

A. To keep in touch with nature.

B. To please people and other animals.

C. To make new friends and keep old ones.

D. To avoid the danger from the outside world.

23、   Britain is the sixth fattest country within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). For more than a decade, several Conservative prime ministers have declared obesity a national emergency and promised to take thorough action, only to produce disappointing plans that fall far shy of what is required.

It should not have taken a disease like Covid-19 to ram home the awful consequences of the UK's obesity. Obesity, as well as its associated conditions of diabetes and high blood pressure, is strongly associated with a higher risk of death from Covid-19 and will have undoubtedly been a factor in the UK having the highest Covid death rate in Europe.

As the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson's experience of catching the virus and being admitted to ICU has reportedly resulted in a complete change in him, who has previously prided himself on his dislike to an over-controlling state. The government is expected to set out a new strategy this week, aimed at reducing obesity levels both in the next few months—ahead of a possible second wave of infections—and the longer term.

This apparent change is welcome, but only if it results in a complete change in the government's approach, which doesn't rely on personal responsibility but on much tougher regulation, as with tobacco and alcohol.

There is abundant evidence about what is needed to cut obesity and in recent years report after report, including from Public Health England and the former chief medical officer, have called for urgent action. Yet these calls were ignored by Conservative ministers who have seemingly put the food and drink industry's financial interests over the health of the nation.

1What have Conservative prime ministers done with obesity in the past ten years?

A.They have denied it is a national emergency. B.They have called for immediate action on it.

C.They have taken thorough steps to control it. D.They have made unsatisfying plans to reduce it.

2What does the underlined phrase "ram home" in the second paragraph probably mean?

A.Make people rather tired of. B.Make people fully aware of.

C.Make people highly skeptical of. D.Make people deeply ashamed of.

3What will the British government probably do next?

A.It will probably issue a new strategy to cut obesity.

B.It will probably lay less stress on financial interests.

C.It will probably set stricter limits on tobacco and alcohol.

D.It will probably take action to reduce Covid-19 death rate.

4What's the best title for the passage?

A.Obesity, an Urgent Issue in the UK B.UK, a Country Suffering from Covid-19

C.UK, a Country Ready for a Complete Change D.Obesity, a Cause of Highest Covid Death Rate

24、CONGRATULATIONS to WarnerMedia on the launch of HBO Max. As an HBO subscriber, I am excited about the programming on the platform. While I am sure the streaming service will continue to improve with time, please consider removing Gone With the Wind from your library of films.

As a filmmaker, I get that movies are often brief descriptions of moments in history. They reflect not only the attitudes and opinions of those involved in their creation, but also those of the prevailing culture. As such, even the most well-intentioned films can fall short in how they represent marginalized communities.

Gone With the Wind, however, has its own unique problem. It is a film that glorifies the American South during the Civil War. It is a film that, when it is not ignoring the horror of slavery, pauses only to continue some of the most painful images of people of color. It is a film that romanticizes the USA in 1860s in a way that continues to admit that the secessionist movement is something better or more noble than what it was.

Let me be really clear: I would just ask, after a respectful amount of time has passed, that the film be reintroduced to the HBO Max platform along with other films that give a complete picture of what slavery and the USA in 1860s truly were. Or, perhaps it could be paired with conversations about narrative and why it is important to have many voices sharing stories from different perspectives rather than merely those reinforcing the views of the prevailing culture.

Currently, there is not even a warning coming before the film. I know taking down a film—particularly a classic Hollywood film—seems like a big request. But it is not nearly as big a demand as when your children ask whether they can join protests in the streets against racism, or when they come to you wanting to know what you did to make the world a better place.

I plan on keeping my subscription to HBO Max. But I hope that those in decision-making positions at WarnerMedia can understand how painful it is to see one film in particular that has helped to continue the racism that is causing angry and grieving Americans to take to the streets.

【1】According to the article, HBO Max is ________.

A.a newly launched film company

B.free to all Internet users in the USA

C.a subscription service for programs of a library

D.a streaming platform supported by WarnerMedia

【2】According to the author, what’s the main problem with the film?

A.It ignores the issue of slavery to a large extent.

B.It questions the truth of secessionist movement.

C.It reveals the painful history of the American Civil War.

D.It challenges prevailing culture in 19th century America.

【3】What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.Risks of reintroduction of the film.

B.Conditions for reintroduction of the film.

C.Possible reasons of reintroduction of the film.

D.Different views about reintroduction of the film.

【4】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A.Children would be misled over the issue of racism.

B.Any warning issued before the movie is prohibited.

C.Taking down the film is not a big deal for WarnerMedia.

D.More Americans would gather to protest against removal.
