二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、No trees are seemingly cut down every time you search something or read a social media post on your phone or laptop. But websites alone do create emissions (排放)—internet usage is responsible for almost four percent of global emissions. That might not seem like a lot, but it is equivalent to about the same emissions caused by global air travel. That percentage is predicted to almost double by 2025 according to a post by Brussels-based energy magazine Energuide. And internet usage is on the rise—as the pandemic pushed many jobs and education online, internet usage went up as high as 40 percent.

The emissions caused by websites come from the hosting company that ensures that websites are up and running when users search for them on their server. By working with an environmentally sound server like Green Geeks, A2 Hosting, and Host Papa that focuses on renewable energy or lowering their energy usage, websites become more sustainable, Wired UK reported. Something as simple as using fewer images on a web page also helps lower emissions. Another way to reduce emissions is to have simply designed websites with little to no moving images like gifts.

Another aspect of creating more sustainable websites means raising awareness, or letting servers or customers in need of new web design know that it’s even an option for them. Some major search engines like Google have promised to reduce their tech centers’ water usage and to rely on more sustainable energy to run their search engines and other online products like Gmail and Google Docs.

Baruch Labunski, CEO of Toronto-based SEO company Rank Secure, explains that when many clients work with the company to have their websites designed, they don’t often think about sustainability. Companies like Rank Secure make a point to have sustainability as part of their process when working with businesses who want help with web design by relying on more sustainable data centers.

Of course, lowering the greenhouse gas footprint of your website is just the start of building up a sustainable company. Just relying on some renewable energy to have an eco-friendly website doesn’t make a company automatically eco-friendly.

“We need to think about the overall impact of our businesses.” says Labunksi. “If your business manufactures or even uses singleuse plastics, then your website’s carbon footprint shouldn’t be your primary concern.”

【1】To create more sustainable websites, the hosting company should_________.

A.meet the data needs

B.design new websites with more gifs

C.work with an eco-friendly server

D.improve the education online

【2】What can we learn from paragraph 3 and 4?

A.The clients should raise awareness and consider sustainability.

B.Rank Secure has no sustainable awareness when working with business.

C.Creating more sustainable websites can provide the only option for clients.

D.All major search engines promised to reduce their tech center water usage.

【3】The passage is written to__________.

A.evaluate the methods to reduce emissions

B.inform readers the harm of overusing websites

C.encourage search engines to lower the energy usage

D.call for building up sustainable companies of emission reduction

22、   This little South American Magellanic penguin swims 5,000 miles, to a beach in Brazil, every year in order to be reunited with the man who saved its life. It sounds like something out of a fairy tale, but it’s true!

71-year-old retired brick worker Joao, who lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, found the small Magellanic penguin lying on rocks at his local beach in 2011. The penguin was covered in oil and running out of time fast. Joao rescued the penguin, naming it Din, cleaned the oil off its feathers and fed him a daily diet of fish to rebuild its strength. After a week of recovery, Joao attempted to release the penguin back into the wild. However, Din had already formed a family bond with his rescuer and wouldn’t leave.

“He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared,” Joao recalls. “I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,” Joao told Globo TV. “No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks () them if they do. He lies on my lap, lets me give him showers, and allows me to feed him.”

Professor Krajewski, a biologist who interviewed the fisherman for Globo TV, told The Independent: “I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well.”

However, environmentalists warn that, while hundreds of the Magellanic species are known to naturally migrate (迁徙) thousands of miles north in search of food, there has been a worrying rise in the phenomenon of oceanic creatures washing up on Brazil’s beaches. Professor David Zee from Rio de Janeiro’s State University, said the increase is due in part to global climatic changes. Professor Zee added that sea animals face increased danger from leaked tanker oil.

Luckily the ending for Joao and Din has been a happy one, even though it is illegal in Brazil to keep wild animals as pets.

Professor Krajewski said: “Professionals who work with animals try to avoid relationships like this occurring so they are able to reintroduce the animal into the wild. But in this single case the authorities allowed Din to stay with Joao because of his kindness.”

1Every year Din swims a long distance to a beach in Brazil to ______.

C.escape from ocean currents D.find much more fish

2When Din was found in 2011 ______.

23、   The Arctic has long fascinated people across the world, so it’s no wonder that stories from this region have inspired movies and TV shows. Its frozen landscapes make the perfect setting for stories of survival, showcasing how both people and animals adapt to the ice and cold. Here are four of our favorite Arctic shows and movies.

Nanook of the North (1922)

This silent film from 1922 is a classic story of man versus (与…对抗) nature. It tells the story of an Inuit hunter named Nanook “The Bear” and his family as they struggle to survive in the harsh environment. Nanook of the North is one of the earliest documentaries — although some of the scenes were staged. Viewers are invited to witness how the Inuit people live. Audiences also see how the Inuit construct igloos one block at a time into icy, domed structures.

Balto (1995)

Based on a true story, this animated (动画的)movie takes place when a deadly disease strikes the small town of Nome, Alaska, in 1925. A half-wolf dog named Balto must lead a sled-dog team across the snowy expanse (宽阔区域)to deliver life-saving medicine to the town’s citizens hundreds of kilometers away. Balto is not only an inspiring true story but an important look at the difficulties of Arctic travel and the brave people — and animals — that are relied on to save the day when people need them most.

Arctic Tale (2007)

Arctic Tale is a US documentary film about the life of a polar bear and her cubs as well as a walrus and her calves. Footage (素材)used for the film was shot over a 15-year period. The documentary gives an inside look at how these.two Arctic animals grow from babies into adulthood as they learn how to hunt and survive in dangerous conditions. Throughout the film, the narrator reminds viewers that climate change is melting the Arctic ice and threatening the animals living there.

Ice Road Truckers (2007—2017)

This US reality TV series features truck drivers who must cross frozen lakes and rivers in remote Arctic land. They risk their lives to deliver much-needed supplies to small towns, diamond mines and offshore oil rigs (钻塔). The series highlights the dangers of working in the Arctic and subarctic (亚北极的), as well as the bravery it takes to battle the icy storms and freezing temperatures.

A.It has wonderful landscapes for animals to survive.

B.People and animals find it easy to adapt to the icy cold.

C.They can watch several earliest documentaries in the film.

D.Nanook tells their story against nature in tough environment.

【3】Which of the following can best describe Balto (1995)?

A.It is a make-up but inspiring story about a deadly disease.

24、Even though vaccination (接种疫苗) is a powerful defense against disease, some voices are against it. In a recent letter, the American Medical Association (AMA) urged big social media including Amazon, Facebook and Google to take action to defend medical science on their platforms.

It said that vaccine-preventable diseases that do harm to the public health like measles (麻疹) are on the rise. Measles cases worldwide jumped more than 30% in 2017 compared to 2016, with the largest increases seen among nations in the Americas, Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Vaccine-preventable diseases are increasing largely because many people are unwilling to get vaccinated. And some of these people even encourage others to refuse vaccination. So this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the anti-vaccination movement a top-10 health threat.

“Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways of avoiding disease — it currently prevents 2-3 million deaths a year, and a further 15 million could be avoided if global coverage of vaccinations improved,” WHO said.

A research article published in 1998 in a medical journal suggested a link between a vaccine and the development of autism (自闭症) in young children. Although the research has been suspected and many other studies have proved that vaccinations do not cause autism, the article is still impressing people strongly today. Another reason for the growth in the anti-vaccination movement is widespread misinformation on social media, which can turn people against vaccination. If a concerned parent consistently sees information in their Newsfeed that casts doubt on the safety of vaccines, it could cause them to disregard the advice of their children’s physicians and public health experts and refuse to follow the recommended vaccination schedule. So access to true information about vaccine safety is badly needed.

【1】What does the AMA require social media to do on their platforms?

A.Join hands to develop new vaccines.

B.Introduce life-threatening diseases.

C.Give up the anti-vaccination movement.

D.Spread the positive effects of vaccination.

【2】Why does the author mention the measles cases in paragraph 2?

A.To stress the danger of measles.

B.To show the result of anti-vaccination.

C.To prove vaccination doesn’t work well.

D.To explain the reason for anti-vaccination.

【3】Which of the following leads to the anti-vaccination phenomenon?

A.Parents’ concerns over vaccine safety.

B.The high cost of vaccination.

C.A research relating vaccination to high death rate.

D.Experts’ advice spread on social media.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards vaccination?

A.Doubtful.

B.Ambiguous.

C.Positive.

D.Negative.
