二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Does life seem to be full of impossible problems? How many times do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem”? Maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to the power of yet. By adding this simple word, you can change everything — “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.” 【1】.

I read about a school that has transformed the way it marks its students’ exams. The school recognized that the old pass/fail system wasn’t helping students’ motivation. If you passed, then great, but those students who didn’t pass often felt like failures. So now students who don’t get the score they need to pass, don’t see a big red “F” for fail on their exam papers; instead, they see a “Not yet”. 【2】. They haven’t reached the destination, but they know that they are going the right way.

【3】. People with a growth mindset don’t concentrate on failure. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are content to keep trying until they do. 【4】. In contrast, people who just focus on failure have what the experts call “a fixed mindset”. These people are always worried about failure and are happy to give up when things don’t go right. Apparently, it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.

But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can train yourself to develop a growth mindset. Stop believing that you can’t and realize that you just can’t yet. 【5】, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it before.

A.Once you start doing this

B.With a strong growth mindset

C.Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible

D.That way the students feel that they are on a journey

E.They enjoy the challenge and believe they can change

F.Anyone can make a big difference by doing the following things

G.This kind of thinking is part of what experts call “having a growth mindset”

22、Have you ever wondered why the world is full of so many people who are incredibly incompetent at the very thing they are paid to do? If so, an educationalist called Laurence J. Peter may have the answer.

In Peter’s view, most people were promoted based on their current performance, with no real consideration of their ability to take on greater responsibility. Eventually, “every employee tends to rise to his or her level of incompetence”, as he wrote. This is the law he termed the“Peter Principle”.

The strongest evidence for the theory comes from a recent study of 131 companies that all used the same performance management software. As you might expect, the team found that the best salesmen or saleswomen were the ones who tended to be promoted. And the study found that managers who used to be very high-performing sales workers tended not to bring significant assistance to their colleagues.

There are lots of potential reasons why this might occur. The personal drive-even aggression-that is needed to promote your own individual sales doesn’t necessarily transform into the interpersonal skills necessary to motivate others, for instance.

In the meantime, knowledge of the “Peter Principle” might be useful for each of us personally. If you frequently find yourself disappointed with your own boss or with your subordinates (下属), it’s worth considering the possibility that you’ve already reached your “level of incompetence”.

That’s not always easy to recognize. As Peter put it, “competence, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder”, but a modest awareness may just encourage you to correct your weaknesses, or to find a new position where your unique talents are of greater value.

【1】Which of the following may Peter be in favour of?

A.An able employee may not be in the right place.

B.Employees with higher pay tend to perform better.

C.Whoever performs well in a firm deserves to be promoted.

D.There is no fixed criterion for assessing an employee’s ability.

【2】What is the result of the study?

A.The “Peter Principle” makes sense both in companies and schools.

B.The best sales workers have got promoted due to their teamwork spirit.

C.The companies are in need of employees with good communicative skills.

D.Managers, once with good sales performance, may contribute little to others’progress.

【3】How does the “Peter Principle” benefit each of us personally?

A.It makes us qualified for a higher position.

B.It reminds us of the importance of learning from others.

C.It inspires us to fulfill ourselves in a suitable position.

D.It provides guidance on how to improve our competence.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

A.General Rules in a Company

B.Reasons for Getting Promoted

C.Knowledge of the “Peter Principle”

D.The Development of a Famous Theory

23、Chinatown, lying in Downtown L.A. near the city’s cultural center, is one of L.A.’s most popular tourist destinations. What are you waiting for? Go to explore this amazing place right now!

A MECCA FOR FOOD

In Chinatown, a mix of new and old restaurants meets everyone’s needs. The museum is housed in the Garnier Building, the oldest surviving Chinese building in a major area of California.

24、   An afternoon nap could improve your cognitive abilities, study says. Taking an afternoon snooze (打盹) could keep your brain sharp, a new study has said. Adults aged 60 and older who took afternoon naps showed signs of better mental sharpness compared to those who didn’t nap, according to a study published in General Psychiatry earlier this week.

Researchers analyzed napping habits in 2,214 older Chinese people and measured their cognitive abilities using several cognitive tests. Participants took the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Beijing version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, both of which test for memory, language and other cognitive abilities. In every category listed in the study, nappers tested statistically higher on average compared to their non-napping counterparts.

Researchers did not gather data from people under 60, so a connection cannot be drawn between napping and younger generations. The study also noted that there are conflicting studies about the benefits and risks of napping.

Sleeping behaviors can be affected by a large number of factors. Daily routines, medication use and sleep disorders can all play a role in how frequently someone takes a nap.

Neubauer recommended taking a shorter “power nap” of up to 20 minutes to decrease the chances of changing into slow-wave sleep, which makes people feel very tired when they wake up. Napping can be a healthy part of an older adult’s day, but make sure sleepiness isn’t due to a treatable nighttime sleep disorder. Older individuals who want to do all they can to preserve their cognitive functioning should deal with nighttime sleep first.

【1】What do we know about the afternoon nap from paragraph 1?

A.An afternoon nap could refresh adults.

B.An afternoon nap could refresh people aged 60 and older.

C.An afternoon nap could improve people’s mental health.

D.An afternoon nap could help people get smarter than ever before.

【2】From the text, what can we learn about the researchers’ study?

A.They didn’t gather data from participants.

B.They analyzed 2,204 older participants’ napping habits.

C.They measured participants’ cognitive abilities by listing examples.

D.They did a test about memory and other cognitive abilities.

【3】What is the text mainly about?

A.The benefits of the afternoon nap.

B.The data about the afternoon nap.

C.The study about the afternoon nap.

D.The benefits and risks of the afternoon nap.
