1、“Lifelong learning” is a popular idea all around the world, but what does it mean?
Many people believe we can learn everything we need to be successful in life at school. ______ it is not true. In modern society, everything changes very fast. Lifelong leaning means learning new skills and knowledge through our ______ lives, not just when we are young.
Lifelong leaning can also mean leaning something to make our lives happier or easier. Older people might attend a ______ course because they cannot send an e-mail to their children, or someone might learn a new ______ so they can talk to their foreign neighbor. In one American city neighborhood, all the women went to a self-defense(自我防护) class so they could fight back if a thief attacked them! All these are different examples of lifelong learning.
Lifelong learning has helped people like Peter J. Daniels, an Australian businessman. Peter grew up poor and when he was a child he experienced learning difficulties. A teacher once told him, “Peter, you will never become anything in life.” After leaving school, Peter became a builder, but he still wanted to _____ and learn how to read. He bought a dictionary and slowly taught himself how to pronounce words and form sentences. Later, Peter started to read books from cover to cover. He read 6,000 books on politics, religion, business and history in two years. All this knowledge helped Peter start a business career. He has written several books and received many honours and awards.

Once there was a strong camel. She liked dancing very much. She wanted to be a ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer. “To make every movement a thing of beauty,” said the camel, “is my dream.”
Again and again she practiced. She repeated the five basic positions a hundred times each day. She worked for long months under the hot sun, but not once did she think of stopping.
At last the camel said, “Now, I am a dancer.” She gave a performance and danced before an invited group of friends. She did very well. When her dance was over, she made a deep bow.
There was no applause (鼓掌). Instead, everyone laughed at her.
“I must tell you frankly,” said one of her friends, “you are lumpy and humpy. You don’t have any talent in dancing. You are, like the rest of us, simply a camel. You are just an animal. You are not and never will be a ballet dancer!” With these words, they moved away across the sand, laughing and joking.
“How wrong they are!” said the camel. “I have worked hard. I will be a good dancer. I will dance and dance just for myself.” That is what she did. It gave her many years of pleasure.

26、 The evening arrived; the boys took their places. The master, in his cook's uniform, stood at the table; his poor helpers were behind him; the gruel(稀粥) was served out; and after they spoke to God to give thanks, there was little time left to eat. The gruel disappeared in no time; the boys whispered to each other, and encouraged Oliver to ask for more. Oliver was very hungry and decided to take a risk. He rose from the table; and went to the master, plate and spoon in hand, said:
"Please, sir. I want some more."
①
The master was a fat, healthy man, but his face became very pale. He looked at the small boy in great surprise for some seconds, and nearly fell but for the support to the table. The helpers were frozen with wonder; the boys with fear.
"What!" said the master at last, in a weak voice.
"Please, sir," replied Oliver, "I want some more."
The master hit Oliver's head with the ladle(长勺) and screamed for Mr. Bumble.
②
Some people were sitting in talking about something, when Mr. Bumble rushed into the room in great excitement, and spoke directly to the gentleman in the high chair, said:
"Mr. Limbkins, I beg your pardon, sir! Oliver Twist has asked for more!"
③
"For more!" said Mr. Limbkins. "Calm yourself, Bumble, and answer me clearly. Do I understand that he asked for more, after he had eaten the supper which was offered?"
"He did, sir," replied Bumble.
"That boy will be hanged," said the gentleman in white. "I know that boy will be hanged."
Everybody supported the gentleman's idea. A heated discussion took place. Oliver was locked in a cold dark room and no boys were allowed to talk to him. The next morning a notice was put up on the outside of the gate, offering a reward of five pounds to anybody who would employ(雇佣) Oliver Twist. In other words, five pounds and Oliver Twist were offered to any man or woman who wanted an apprentice(学徒) to any trade or business.

27、阅读下列短文, 从每小题的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
One day a man found a cocoon(蚕) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly, a small opening appeared and the butterfly made its great effort(努力) to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.(那个蛹好象忘记了它该怎样做, 也好象停止了挣扎).
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly would come out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.
The man was in his kindness, but he didn’t understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid(液体) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle(拼搏) to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been, we could never fly.
