If only I had followed Mom’s advice

The major theme of my summer this year has been “going back home”. I went back to China as soon as school was over, at the end of June. I returned to Canada on August 17.

Going back to China this summer was not easy, because of the A (H1N1) flu. Everybody seemed to be terrified. The easiest thing to do was to wear masks on the plane, as my mom suggested. However, it was difficult to wear a mask for 10 hours. The idea was more horrifying than catching the flu! In the end I decided I’d take the masks onto the plane, but not wear them.

Everything seemed okay during the flight. I saw only five people were wearing masks all the time. “Comfort is always the first thing,” I said to myself. When we arrived in Beijing some people came on the plane and took our temperature. Fortunately, nobody had a fever. Therefore, I was able to get home on time.

Unluckily, everything went wrong after I got home. I became sick, with a sore throat and a fever. The horrible image of the flu suddenly hovered in front of me, laughing at me, calling me an ill-behaved child because I had not followed my mom’s words. Luckily, I just had a common cold; probably it was due to the stale air inside the plane cabin. While I was sick in bed, I sighed sadly. If I had listened to my mom in the first place, I probably would have never caught the cold.

It’s always wise to listen to your mom’s suggestions.

【1】The author returned to ____ on August 17.

A.China

B.Canada

C.America

D.England

【2】What did the author’s mom suggest to him?

A.She suggested him wearing masks on the plane.

B.She suggested him taking the masks onto the plane.

C.She suggested him going back home.

D.She suggested him taking off the masks on the plane.

【3】How many people were wearing masks all the time during the fight?

A.Only one.

B.Only five.

C.Only six.

D.All of the passengers.

【4】Did the author catch the flu?

A.Yes, he caught the A(H1N1) flu.

B.No, he didn’t. He had a common cold.

C.No. He was healthy.

D.We don’t know.

【5】Does the author regret not following his mom’s advice?

A.Yes, he does.

B.No, he doesn’t.

C.No. He followed his mom’s advice.

D.We don’t know.

24、As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, he was surprised to see that these huge elephants were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. It was clear that the elephants could easily break away from their ropes but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and didn’t run away. “Well,” the trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was surprised. These animals could at any time break free from their ropes but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck(困在) right where they were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

In December 1903, New York Times questioned the intelligence of the Wright brothers efforts to invent a machine that would fly. But one week later, at Kitty Hawk, the Wright Brothers took their famous flight.

Albert Einstein did not speak until he was four and did not read until he was seven. His teachers and even his parents thought he was very slow. And while he may have been a 'slow starter', I'm sure you'd agree that he was very successful in the end.

Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

1Why do the elephants never try to break away from the ropes?

A. Because they are too young to do it.   B. Because the rope is very strong.

C. Because they think they can’t.   D. Because they think the trainer will beat them.

2How did the man feel after he heard what the trainer said?

A. Excited   B. Relaxed   C. Happy   D. Surprised

3Which of the following is right according to the paragraph?

A. The trainer takes very good care of the big elephants.

B. The same size ropes can hold the big and small elephants.

C. The Wright brothers didn’t invent the first plane.

D. Albert Einstein did not speak or read until he was seven.

4What can we learn from this passage?

A. Failing is part of learning.   B. We should learn from the trainer.

C. Training animals is interesting.   D. We should give up the struggle in life.

5What is the best title for this test?

A. Young And Old Elephants.   B. A Clever Trainer

C. The Elephant Training   D. The Elephant Rope
