21、Every day I pass by a homeless old man on the street. He usually sat near where I go to school. Whenever I pass by, he says “hello” in a cheerful manner, and I always say it back. I give him any extra (多余的) change I have.

The old man always wears an old watch. It is not an expensive watch by any means, but it serves its purpose. One day I noticed he wasn’t wearing it any more. I asked him why and he looked down and told me that the battery (电池) had died so he threw it away. I knew he couldn’t buy a new battery and he had no enough money to buy a new watch.

He stayed on my mind all day, and I knew what I had to do. I went out to a shop and bought him a watch. It was not an expensive one, but one that was very similar to the one he had.

When I saw him the next day, he was smiling and cheerful as ever. When I bent down to put some change in his cup, I also dropped the watch in. I didn’t say anything about it. I just smiled at him and kept on walking. He didn’t even notice it until I left. I looked back and watched as he pulled the watch from the cup. He looked to me and I just smiled and nodded. He put the watch on with a big smile on his face and I walked happily on my way.

22、When I was about 12, a girl in my class liked to point out(指出) my problems. I was too thin; I wasn’t a good student; I talked too much; I was too proud(骄傲) and so on. At last, I became very angry and ran to my father. He listened to me quietly. Then he asked, “Are these things true or not? Do you know what you are really like? Go and make a list of what she said and find the things that are true.” I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered(发现) that about half of the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change(改变) (like being very thin). But there were things I could and wanted to change. For the first time, I got a clear picture of myself.

I brought the list back to Dad. He didn’t take it, “That’s just for you,” he said, “You know the truth(真相) about yourself better than anyone else. When people say something that is true about you, you should find it helpful.”

Our world is full of people who think they know your matter. Don’t be angry and feel hurt. Listen to them.

However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn't what I expected. It didn't look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2 and 3, and the other for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.

I knew they needed me.

I was busy preparing lessons, reading test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hardworking children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better, and we are now good friends.
