二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、By the year 2050, Earth’s population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion people. With this growth comes a surprising demand for food resources. To find an effective way, to deal with the global food safety crisis, Enter X, Alphabet Inc launched Project Mineral, which focuses on “computational agriculture”, a term to describe new technologies that will further in- crease understanding about the plant world.

Can a machine be taught to understand the plant world? After years of work, Project Mineral leader Elliot Grant and his team’s latest prototype(原型)a plant-scanning robot-will turn up at the Smithsonian’s “Futures” exhibition later this year. The four-wheeled plant robot, about as tall as a shipping container and as wide as a car, uses different cameras and other technology to monitor and find possible problems with plants.

As it rolls through the farmland, it can identify weeds, and measure the ripeness of fruits. The Mineral robot can become taller to take pictures of wheat plants, or widen to scan a broad bed of crops. What’s more, when the robot meets with different situations out in the field, it can accurately identify specific crops, traits or diseases.

Mineral has partnered with a farmer in the Philippines who is helping the team study diseases in bananas. Images of diseased bananas will be used to teach the robot how to detect diseases.

The robot also takes pictures of flowers and then uses the machine learning model to count a plant’s flowering speed, which is important to understand how a plant responds to its environment and predict the yields. Besides, the robot can measure all kinds of leaf sizes and detect greenness.

Though the robot has come a long way from its origin, it’s still a prototype, Mineral stresses that they’re constantly improving and working closely with experts in the agricultural field to understand plants further.

【1】What is the purpose of Project Mineral?

A.To fight the global food safety crisis.

B.To find solutions to crop diseases.

C.To improve a plant-scanning robot.

D.To solve the population problems.

【2】What is a feature of the Mineral robot?

A.It powers itself.

【3】What can the Mineral robot do?

A.Grow plants on its own.

B.Help fight insects.

C.Detect crop diseases.

D.Remove bad fruits.

【4】How does the Mineral robot predict crop yields?

A.By observing the ripeness of fruits.

B.By calculating how fast plants flower.

C.By analyzing the shape of plants’ leaves.

D.By analyzing images of diseased plants.

22、The pandemic has given a big push to all forms of digital communication. A workplace dominated by time on screens may seem bound to favor newer, faster and more visual ways of transmitting information. But an old form of communication - writing - is also flourishing (蓬勃).

The value of writing is highly valued in management thinking. “The discipline of writing something down is the first step towards making it happen, ” said Lee Iacocca, a giant of the American car industry. Jeff Bezos banned slides from meetings of senior Amazon executives (主管) back in 2004, in favor of well-structured memos (备忘录).

The move to remote working has strengthened the value of writing. When tasks are being handed off to colleagues in other locations, comprehensive documentation is crucial. When new employees start work on something, they want the back story. When old hands depart an organization, they should leave knowledge behind.

Software developers have already worked out the value of the written words. A research programme from Google into the ingredients of successful technology projects found that teams with high quality documentation deliver software faster and more reliably. Gitlab, a code hosting platform whose workforce is wholly remote, describes its secret of success as “textual communication”.

The deep thought and the discipline required by writing are helpful in other contexts, too. “Brain writing“ is a brain storming technique, used by Slack among others, in which participants are given time to put down their ideas before discussion begins.

Writing is not always the best way to communicate in the workplace. Video is more memorable; a phone call is quicker; even PowerPoint has its place. But for the structured thought it demands, and the ease with which it can be shared and edited, the written words are made for remote work and will flourish in the post-pandemic workplace.

【1】Why are Lee Iacocca and Jeff Bezos mentioned in paragraph 2?

A.To support an idea.

B.To introduce a topic.

23、We are all aware of the effect greenhouse gas emissions is having on our planet and the efforts needed to tackle climate change. Most of us are doing our bit to minimize our impact on the environment, but despite our collective effort, are we doing enough to achieve net zero by 2050?

Net zero means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Many countries are doing their bit by changing how they generate and use power, thereby cutting carbon dioxide output. And they announced what further steps they were going to take at the recent COP26 summit in Glasgow.

In the UK, the government has been setting out its plans to achieve net zero by 2050. It's recently announced an end date for the sale of gas boilers (燃气锅炉),which are used for heating homes. The idea is to replace them with heat pumps. It’s offering homeowners grants (拨款) of up to £5,000 to get them installed Another initiative in the UK is a big push towards electric vehicles. There are to be financial incentives (激励) for car manufacturers, and more charging points are to be installed in streets. And there’s to be a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel (柴油) cars by 2030.

But not all emissions can be reduced to zero, so those remaining will have to be compensated for, or offset (抵消). One way to do this is to plant thousands of trees, which are good at absorbing carbon dioxide. The UK government has pledged (保证) to plant 30,000 hectares of trees a year by 2025. There are other ideas too, but what's certain is this will cost money. The CBI's Tom Thackray told the BBC that 'those costs have to be weighed up against the cost of inaction (不作为).”

Whether the UK, or anyone else, reaches net zero remains to be seen. And there’s some doubt about how this can be accurately measured anyway. But it's generally recognized that a global effort is needed to tackle climate change. Therefore, net zero targets only make sense if every other country is moving in the same direction.

【1】Which is NOT one of UK government’s plans to achieve net zero?

A.A big push towards electric vehicles.

B.To plant 30,000 hectares of trees a year by 2025.

C.To weigh up the all the costs against the cost of inaction.

D.To replace gas boilers with heat pumps.

【2】What does the word “initiative” mean in paragraph 3?

A.A new plan.

B.A new grant

C.A new law.

D.A new ban.

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The world will probably reach net zero.

B.One country's efforts are far from enough to achieve net zero.

C.Every other country is moving in the same direction.

D.There’s doubt about how net zero can be accurately measured.

24、Susan Scott, 71, is glad that she didn't think about her age when she took up bodybuilding at the age of 59.

“I reinvent myself every ten years. I started my 60s as a bodybuilder and now I'm beginning my 70s as a writer,” she said. “People usually limit themselves by age, and it's discouraging. With age, I remain young at heart.”

Dr Susan started bodybuilding at an age when most are considering retirement though she was an athlete from an early age. As a child in Venezuela, she took to gymnastics and later graduated with a physical education degree.

Then she obtained a master's degree in education and later a Ph. D. in Adult Personal Development. She taught at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for 16 years, while raising two daughters.

“I started bodybuilding when I met Steve Pfiester, a gym guy who practiced yoga. He invited me to his gym and offered to train me. I started in January and in June he took me to my first competition in Bradenton, Florida,” she recalled.

Dr Susan's photos show that she has devoted long hours to taking care of her body. But she also develops her mind and spirit. On any given day, she gets up at 3 am to read books. At 4:30 am she's out to walk three miles and run another three. This is followed by yoga and a swim at the beach while the sun rises. After writing her journal and working on her book between 8 and 10 am, she hits the gym for at least two hours. “I don't lose track of time,” she said.

Dr Susan's war on ageism has rubbed off on her two daughters, both in their early thirties. “They both take care of their bodies and minds. If you give them a good foundation as a parent, you know that they will always come back to their roots. I tried to remind myself of that during their difficult teen years.”

So she had been provided with everything she ever wanted since she was born. She lived an extraordinary life and always felt that she was not an ordinary kid.

When Hari came back after graduation, her father asked her to join his company as an accountant. However, she was naturally not happy with that. She wanted to work on a higher post as a CEO of the company while her father wanted her to start as an ordinary girl.
