21、 It’s been less than a month since Arnold, a Texas high school student, was forbidden from going to the prom and graduation unless he cut his locs. As his story spread on social media, celebrities and activists came to Arnold’s defence and encouraged him to stand up to his school’s hair discrimination. Now, in a significant turn of events, he’s proudly wearing his own hair-style at the 2020 Oscars.
Arnold and his mother were invited to attend as the guests of director Matthew A. Cherry, who won the award for Best Animated Short Film for Hair Love tonight. Fittingly, the short film tells the story of a Black father learning to style his daughter’s natural hair.
Arnold told us he couldn’t wait to walk the red carpet with the Hair Love team. “I’m so grateful. I never expected any of this,” Arnold says. “The message of that movie and my message go together so well. I think it’s really amazing how they reached out to me and how we can fight this together.”
Together, Cherry and Arnold are advocating for the nationwide passage of The CROWN Act, which is the law authored by California Senator Holly J. Mitchell that makes it illegal to discriminate against Black people for wearing their natural hair in the workplace or at school. Currently the Act has only been passed in New Jersey, California, and New York.
Arnold has also received the support of celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres, who invited him to appear on her daytime show and surprised him with a $20,000 scholarship from Alicia Keys. Arnold says the scholarship will help him pursue his dream of becoming a veterinarian. Arnold tells us. “The most exciting thing is seeing all the people that are on my side. I thought it would be a lot more hate than support.” Tonight, Arnold is looking forward to sharing his story on a massive platform. “As teenagers, we have a voice and we’re the future,” he says. “I want more cultural acceptance. If there’s any other situation that I feel like I need to stand up for, I would do that in a heartbeat.”

22、Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when MR. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.
‘‘I would never have said to my mom, Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?”says Ballmer. There was just a complete gap in taste. Music was not the only distance. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectation: earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families: Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, "To my mother, my best friend."
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parent. “ There's still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening," says Kerne, a psychology professor, at Lebanon Valley College. "In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents."
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic(民主) process that encourages everyone to have a say,
“My parents were on the 'before' side of that change, but today's parents. the 40-year-old were on the 'after' side," explains Mr. Ballmer. "It's not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now."
【1】Which of the following shows that the generation gap is disappearing?
A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.
B. Parents put more trust in their children's abilities.
C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs.
D. Parents share more interests with their children.
【2】The change in today's parent-child relationship is ________.

A. follow the trend o f the change
B. can set a limit to the change
C. fail to take the-change seriously
D. have little difficulty adjusting to the change
【4】The purpose of the passage is to ________.

23、Have you ever wondered why most people prefer to book accommodations that have a great view from the balcony? Frank Lloyd Wright says, “Study Nature, love Nature, stay close to Nature. 【1】.”
It’s no secret that closing to nature is good for creative minds. Scientists agree that being in nature restores exhausted attention circuits, which can then help us be more open to creativity and problem-solving. 【2】: As part of her daily writing routine, bestseller author JK. Rowling would take a morning walk to small streams nearby before eventually returning to work. I would argue that this habit isn’t just a habit but an intentional, necessary element of her creative process. Actually, unique ideas come from the contact with nature.
Forest bathing is a common form of relaxation and medicine in Japan. It was developed in 1982, and recent studies demonstrate that being in the forest and walking among the trees lower your stress levels. The effects are so powerful that forest bathing is now a government-supported policy in Japan. 【3】. Just a walk in the woods on a sunny morning also improves your wellbeing.
【4】! In a series of experiments published in 2021, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, studied the potential impact of nature on the willingness to be generous, trusting, and helpful toward others. After being exposed to the more beautiful nature scenes, participants acted more generously and more trusting in the games than those who saw less beautiful scenes, and the effects appeared to be due to corresponding increases in positive emotion.
A walk in nature walks the soul back home. 【5】? Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, to notice the way people move, the way the sun reflects in a puddle.

24、You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.
“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪) is sort of odd,” Gray told the BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”
We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, liftusers unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.
He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want – it’s your own little box.
If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线地) across from each other to create distance.
When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.
New entrants(新进入者) to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone.
Why are we so awkward in lifts?
“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”
In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be construed (理解) as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.
【1】The main purpose of the article is to______.
A. remind us to enjoy ourselves in the elevator

25、With a hybrid(混合的)approach to work, the importance of being physically present in a centralized office is greatly reduced, allowing for far more flexible work schedules among employees. In most cases, this means some employees working on-site in the office, some employees working off-site—either from ___________ or remotely from another location—and some employees who have the flexibility to switch between the office and working remotely, ___________tasks, deadlines, and personal needs.
When businesses adopt hybrid work models, which rely heavily on a remote-first approach, the entire concept of location is ___________. By connecting to the workplace using cloud solutions, video conferencing technology, and similar tools, employees do not need to be ___________ present in the workplace in order to do their job—although they can be if they prefer to be, or for situations where ___________ communication is better suited.
This can offer a number of benefits for both employees and employers. ___________, on days when bad weather might prevent people from getting into the office, they are still able to work from home. Similarly, if major events make it necessary to ___________ the workplace—as was the case with the COVID-19 pandemic—there will be ___________ disturbance to operations.
Moreover, the removal of geographical barriers can be extremely advantageous in terms of ___________, allowing employers to gain access to a wider talent pool, making it easier to find qualified candidates and build a more diverse and inclusive workforce. With ____________ work arrangements now among the top benefits sought after by job seekers, companies employing the hybrid model are better positioned to ____________ top candidates.
Another major benefit associated with flexible work schedules and the hybrid work model is the ability to make a business more ____________. This is important because research suggests that employees are more likely to take a job and stay in a job with companies that have a strong environmental agenda. ____________, 64 percent of young people say they would not take a job with a company that did not have a promise of social responsibility.
The most significant environmental impact made by the hybrid work model is the largely reduced amount of ____________ among employees. The effects of this are especially significant when there's a long distance between home and work, which requires employees to use their own cars. Fewer people coming into the office is also likely to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the office itself. All of this can combine to help improve a company's green certificate and aid in positioning the organization as a ____________ company in the eyes of job seekers and customers.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
You never know where life will lead you. When I was a young boy. I found myself constantly overshadowed by my elder sister, Becky. It was not her intention to outshine me, nor did she make any effort to do so. However, with Becky exceling both academically and athletically, it was only natural that her accomplishments got all the attention, while my own achievements went unnoticed. Being the younger brother of someone who effortlessly excelled in all areas of life proved to be a big challenge, as I struggled to find my own identity under her brilliance.
Becky’s talent in swimming was particularly noteworthy and she was recognized as the finest swimmer in our province. Yet, the swimming pool never attracted me. Even as a child, I developed a dislike for swimming after a rather unpleasant experience of water entering my nose. Swimming was not for me.
However, fate had its own way of transforming my life. One day, I fell off my skateboard and broke my leg so badly that the doctors said I could never really engage in the sport again. They said there was only one exercise that would be good for me-swimming!
Reluctantly, I decided to give swimming a try. At first, it was a struggle. I had a lot of fear and anxiety about putting my face in the water, fearing a repeal of the incident that had scarred me as a child. But little by little, with the support and guidance of my sister, I slowly overcame my fear and learned to enjoy swimming.
As I spent more time in the water, I realized that swimming wasn’t just exercise; it was a way to challenge myself and push my limits. I began to set goals for myself, starting with simple tasks like swimming a certain distance without stopping, and gradually progressing to more advanced techniques. With each achievement, my confidence grew, and I found myself becoming more comfortable in the water.
Swimming also brought me closer to Becky. We spent hours together at the pool, motivating and encouraging each other. She became my trainer, helping me improve my technique and providing me with valuable advice. It was through swimming that we developed a deeper bond as siblings (兄弟姐妹).
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;(2)开头已给出。
As the years went by, I started participating in local swimming competitions.
