二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、On an autumn afternoon, a remote sheep farm in southern Greenland is quiet. The silence is abruptly broken when dozens of sheep come thundering across the hills overlooking the farm. Walking after them are Lars Nielsen and his 37-year-old son Kunuk Nielsen.

The Nielsen family has owned and run the farm since 1972. Kunuk says the summers now are longer than when he was a child and that drought has become a problem. The fields are not so green as those in the old days. He has to buy hay (草料) from European countries.

The effects of a warming climate are obvious on the land. While he intends to struggle on, his older brother Pilu has chosen a different path.

Pilu, 40, lives in Qaqortoq in the south of Greenland -- a town of about 3,000 people. Ten years ago, he got his helicopter pilot's license and is now part owner of a small company called Sermeq Helicopters. It caters to construction and telecommunication workers and an increasing number of foreign tourists.

Pilu says he loves his family's sheep farm. But he saw that warming temperatures were making remote areas of Greenland more accessible and wanted to look for other opportunities. His company's most popular tours include a visit to Greenland's glaciers.

The warming temperatures are also affecting traditional ways of life, particularly hunting. The sea ice is changing; it's becoming less so that hunting on ice becomes more difficult. When there's no sea ice, it's difficult to use dog sledges (雪橇),and the whole culture around having dogs and dog sledges and doing traditional hunting on the ice is sort of diminishing.

Besides, many Greenlanders, like Pilu, are leaving the countryside for towns and the capital city Nuuk, where opportunities are greater. A report found that Nuuk's share of Greenland's population grew from 17.2% in 1977 to 29.2% in 2014. If there were enough houses in Nuuk, the share would even be bigger.

【1】What problem does Kunuk Nielsen's farm face?

27、   Can you imagine your doctor warning that taking a bath could be unhealthy? In the early 1800s , many doctors thought that tubs (浴缸) could carry diseases, so they advised against their use.1The White House did not even have a bathtub until 1851.

In the 19th century ,only one home out of six had a bathroom,2 On Saturday nights children all lined up for their turns to wash in a wooden tub in the kitchen. Mothers had to boil the water on the fire and carry it over to fill the tub.3

When the first bathtubs were introduced ,even their makers weren't sure whether the new fashion would last. They advertised their products as water containers that “could be used as bathing tubs”.

4By then most middle-class families had indoor taps (龙头). At first most tubs were made of wood, but as the popularity of the product increased, so did the creativity of tub makers. Before porcelain tubs there were rubber ones like the plastic swimming pools kids use today.

5Instead they tell their patients about the advantages of frequent bathing. Maybe one of the best reasons why doctors encourage frequent trips to the tub is that bathed patients smell better!

A.A child took only one bath a week.

B.The children would probably get hurt in the bathtubs.

C.Nowadays doctors no longer warn that bathtubs carry diseases.

D.It's no wonder that children could not jump into a tub as they do today.

28、My track and field coach, Mr. Jones, had decided to get the team to take part in the 4×100m race. It would be the first time that we were running in such a race. We needed to work as a team to improve our speed. The most critical moment was the passing of the baton (接力棒) at the right time to the next runner.

Mr. Jones had chosen me to start the race. The next runner would be Susan. In the beginning, whenever we practiced passing the baton, wrong. I would either be going too slowly or she would be taking off too late. We needed to perfect it. At the same time, I had to make sure that I would not go beyond the yellow line.

Finally, it was the day of the race. We were confident that the gold medal would be ours. Each of us had improved in our running speed. Our passing of the baton had been perfected during the practices.

My reactions were exact and accurate as I started running. Everything felt the way it should as I rushed towards Susan. I held the baton in my sweaty palms, promising myself not to let go. My long legs moved me as fast as I could go round the corner. As I came closer to my final steps, my heart was beating faster than usual. The cheering by the spectators (观众) got into me and I became nervous. “What if we lose?” I thought to myself. It was then that I saw Susan in the far distance.

I held out the baton and continued running quickly towards Susan. Susan yelled “Slow down, slow down ! ”However, it was too late. The official held up the red flag. It was then that I realized that I had gone beyond the yellow line.

29、Despite what so many people would love to believe, NASA hasn’t discovered any evidence of past or present intelligent life on Mars. So, when the Curiosity rover (好奇号探测器) found something suspicious on the Red Planet’s surface, they were not only surprised but also a little bit worried.

The thin fragment was suspicious enough to guarantee its own name, with NASA’s Curiosity rover team calling it the “Pettegrove Point Foreign Object Debris,” named for the location where it was discovered. With no idea what it was or where it came from, the rover’s handlers began to worry that it might actually be a piece of the rover itself, suggesting some unseen damage or other issue with the robot. Thankfully, those concerns seem to have been unfounded.

In a new update from NASA the object has now been identified as a natural piece of rock rather than a piece of any man-made craft or vehicle. The team analyzed the bizarre object with a tool called the ChemCam RMI. The instrument uses a laser (激光器) to sniff out the makeup of anything it’s pointed at, and the results for this particular piece of debris revealed that it’s actually just a very thin piece of rock.

NASA describes the inspection: The planning day began with an interesting result from the previous plan’s ChemCam RMI analysis of a target that was referred to as “Pettegrove Point Foreign Object Debris” (PPFOD), and speculated to be a piece of spacecraft debris. In fact it was found to be a very thin flake of rock, so we can all rest easy tonight—Curiosity has not begun to shed its skin!

How this particularly thin sliver of rock got to where it is—and why it seems to be a different colour than the surrounding sand and debris —remains unexplained, but at least the rover isn’t falling apart.

【1】What attitude does NASA hold towards the newly found thin fragment?

A.Positive.

B.Surprised.

C.Interested.

D.Amazed but worried.

【2】What is the “Pettegrove Point Foreign Object Debris” named for?

A.Its finder.

B.Its location.

C.Its researcher.

D.Its shape.

【3】What does the underlined word “bizarre” mean?

A.Strange.

B.Changeable.

C.Normal.

D.Common.

【4】Which of the following questions has got clear answer?

A.How this particularly thin sliver of rock got to where it is.

B.Why it seems to be a different colour than the surrounding sand and debris.

C.Whether the rover is falling apart.

D.None of them.
