26、The third week of SEAL training means Hell Week. It is on Wednesday of Hell Week that you paddle down to the mud flats(泥滩) and spend the next 15 hours trying to survive the freezing-cold mud, the howling wind and the increasing pressure from the instructors to quit. As the sun began to set that Wednesday evening, my training class, having broken the rules, was ordered into the mud. The mud consumed each man till there was nothing visible but our heads. The instructors told us we could leave the mud if only five men would quit—just five men and we could get out of the extreme cold.
Looking around the mud flat, it was apparent that some students were about to give up. It was still over eight hours till the sun came up--eight more hours of freezing cold. The chattering teeth and shivering moans (呻吟)of the trainees were so loud that it was hard to hear anything. And then, one voice began to echo (回荡)through the night--one voice raised in song. The song was terribly out of tune, but sung with great enthusiasm. One voice became two, and two became three, and before long everyone in the class was singing. We knew that if one man could rise above the great suffering then others could as well. The instructors threatened us with more time in the mud if we kept up the singing—but the singing went on. And somehow, the mud seemed a little warmer, the wind a little less bitter and the dawn not so far away.
If I have learned anything in my time traveling the world it is the power of hope. The power of one person, Washington, Lincoln, King, Mandela and even a young girl from Pakistan, Malala, can change the world by giving people hope.
So, if you want to change the world, start singing when you're up to your neck in mud.

28、Michelle was a student at University of California, Los Angeles. She is here to tell us how she feels about the city.
What were the best things about Los Angeles?
One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is the weather. I hate the cold and it never really gets that cold there. Plus, most of the time it’s usually sunny, which is good because I love going to the beach during the summer. There’s so much to do at the beach, but my favorite thing in L.A. was having a picnic on the sand with my friends.
What were the worst things about being there?
I disliked having to drive everywhere to get around because the city is so spread out. Los Angeles has a lot of traffic and sometimes it takes a long time to get somewhere close by just because the streets are so crowded. Also, a lot of people complain about the pollution.
Did you have any problems there?
Just the normal problems of living in any city, like watching out for pickpockets (扒手). Some people think Los Angeles has a lot of crime, but I think it’s as safe as any other city. Also, many people think driving is difficult because there is a lot of traffic and road rage (路怒症), but it just takes a little practice and a lot of patience.
What are the people like in Los Angeles?
There are all types of people in Los Angeles since the city is pretty diverse. For the most part, though, most of the people are friendly, calm and relaxed. Some people say that everyone in Los Angeles is beautiful, but I think that’s just a stereotype (模式化的印象).
Would you go back to Los Angeles?
Certainly. Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love the fact that it has all the nightlife and shopping of a big city, but also has access to beaches, parks, mountains and other places you can’t usually find in large cities. Between the weather and the beaches and all the fun things to do, it’s a great place to be.
【1】We can learn from the text that Michelle _____.
A. hates the heavy traffic in Los Angeles
B. dislikes the cold weather in Los Angeles
C. thinks Los Angeles is small and crowded
D. enjoys driving everywhere in Los Angeles
【2】What’s Michelle’s impression of the people in Los Angeles?
A. They get angry easily.
B. All sorts of people live there.
C. They are patient and amusing.
D. Everyone is kind and beautiful.
【3】How does Michelle find Los Angeles?
A. Safe but noisy. B. Relaxing but busy.
C. Polluted and dangerous. D. Diverse and interesting.
【4】We learn from the text that _____.
A. Michelle was born in Los Angeles
B. Michelle loved the life in Los Angeles
C. Los Angeles has many traffic accidents
D. Michelle has no plan to return to Los Angeles
29、There are many common household items that are non-toxic(无毒的)and that work well for killing weeds.
Boiling water、
It is especially good for sidewalks, driveways, or yards. You can boil the water to 100 degree in a container, which is better, as it makes it easier and safer to pour, as well as gives your weed-killing a bit more accuracy.
Fire
Using a kitchen burner or flame-weeder tool to apply heat directly to the leaves and roots of the weed is a fine way of getting rid of them, but be careful not to bum the entire neighborhood down. Anywhere there is dried material you should use fire with extra care.
Vinegar(醋)
White vinegar is perfectly fine for weed killing, especially when a pump or two of dish soap are added into the spray(喷洒)bottle. Spray it directly on the leaves of the disliked plant and be careful not to over-spray. Consider waiting until any strong wind has wound down as a bit of wind can carry the chemicals onto other plants you'd like to keep. Also try to avoid dropping vinegar into the soil, as it will make it harder for anything to grow there.
Salt
Salt is a great weed-killer and can be added to vinegar or hot water sprays, but when it goes into the earth nothing can grow. Add a little dish soap to help the salt stick to the leaves and be careful where you aim. Spraying the soil will damage it, while hitting other plants you like may kill them too.
【1】Which item can kill weeds precisely?
A.Fire.
B.Salt.
C.Vinegar.
D.Boiling water.
【2】Why should we spray a little vinegar directly on leaves?
A.To avoid chemicals.

D.To protect your other plants.
【3】Where can this text come from?
A.A technology magazine.
B.A gardening magazine.
C.A cooking magazine.
D.An encyclopedia.

In the United States, a company is working on a project that could change the way we think about public transportation. Its【1】system would move people around in steel tubes. Those passengers would be traveling at speeds of up to 1, 200 kilometers per hour.
The futuristic steel tube transportation system is called Hyperloop. Workers plan to test the system next year in a 【2】built community called Quay Valley. The town will be powered.【3】by energy from the sun.
The Hyperloop transport system is the idea of businessman Elon Musk. Dirk Ahlborn is head of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. He says his company has taken Mr. Musk's idea and is【4】a system that will be safe, environmentally friendly and fast.
“It's 100 percent solar【5】. We're not going to get up to 760 miles per hour, but we believe we can actually break the records that exist right now.”
This means that a four-hour drive from Los Angeles, California to Las Vegas, Nevada, could someday take only 30 minutes by Hyperloop.
The system involves a series of capsules that【6】inside a long tube. These containers would not need to travel along a pathway or track. . The system-has been designed to operate above or below ground.
“Inside the tube you create a low【7】environment very similar to an airplane that's at high altitudes. So now the capsule travelling inside the tube doesn't meet with as much【8】, and therefore can travel really fast with very little energy.”
Dirk Ahlborn and his company will use an eight-kilometer track in Quay Valley to find the best way to set up passenger traffic and repair capsules. A larger system will cost a(n)【9】six to $10 billion to build.
If Mr. Ahlborn and his company succeed, we may one day see these very fast Hyperloop capsules 【10】through tubes around the world.
