Toyota is working with Japan’s space agency on a vehicle to explore the lunar surface, with ambitions to help people live on the moon by 2040 and then go live on Mars. The vehicle being developed is called Lunar Cruiser, whose name shows respect to the popular Toyota vehicle Land Cruiser.

The vehicle is based on the idea that people eat, work, sleep and communicate with others safely in cars, and the same can be done in outer space, said Takao Sato, who heads the Lunar Cruiser project at Toyota Motor Corp.

“We see space as an area for our once in-a-century transformation. By going to space, we may be able to develop telecommunications and other technology that will prove valuable to human life,” Sato said.

Gitai Japan Inc. , a partner with Toyota, has developed a robotic arm for the Lunar Cruiser, designed to perform tasks such as carrying out inspections and maintaining the vehicle. The arm can work like different tools, scooping, lifting and sweeping.

Japanese craziness about the moon has been growing. A private Japanese company called ispace Inc. is working on lunar rovers (探月车), landing and orbiting, and is scheduled for a moon landing later this year. Businessman Yusaku Maezawa, who recently took videos of himself floating around in the International Space Station, has booked an orbit around the moon aboard Tesla CEO Elon Musk s Starship.

Toyota engineer Shinichiro Noda said he is excited about the lunar project, an extension of the automaker s longtime mission to serve customers and the moon may provide valuable resources for life on Earth. “ Sending our cars to the moon is our mission, ” he said, “ Toyota has vehicles almost everywhere, but this is about taking our cars to somewhere we have never been. ”

28、Scientists once considered sleep to be like a shadow getting drawn over a window between the brain and the outside world: when the shadow is closed, the brain stops reacting to outside stimuli (刺激).

A study published on 12 October in Nature Neuroscience suggests that there might be periods during sleep when that shade is partially open.

A few years ago, Oudiette, a cognitive scientist in France, began questioning the definition of sleep after she and her team conducted an experiment in which they were able to communicate with people who are aware that they are dreaming while they sleep — otherwise known as clear dreamers. During these people’s dreams, experimenters were able to ask questions and get responses through eye and facial-muscle movements.

Karen Konkoly, who was a co-author on that study, says “it was a big open question in our minds whether communication would be possible with non-clear dreamers.”

So Oudiette continued with the work. In her latest study, she and her colleagues observed 27 people with narcolepsy (嗜睡症) — characterized by daytime sleepiness and a high frequency of clear dreams — and 22 people without the condition. While they were sleeping, participants were repeatedly asked to frown or smile. All of them responded accurately to at least 70% of these tips. Overall response rates were higher for all participants during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when the deepest sleep occurs but the brain remains quite active, than during other sleep stages.

This study is part of a larger advance in the field of sleep research, says Mélanie Strauss,a cognitive scientist in Brussels. Researchers are moving away from monitoring sleep mainly with EEG (脑电图) and towards “fine grained” approaches that combine EEG with various tasks and stimuli — a strategy that could help to cast light on specific diseases or conditions, she says.

【1】What did scientists think of sleep in the past?

A.It happens during different periods.

B.It is a shadow formed within the brain.

C.It suggests a weakening in the brain’s functions.

D.It means a stop in brain’s response to the outside.

【2】How did clear dreamers react to the experimenters?

A.By moving their face and eyes.

B.By repeating the questions.

C.By providing accurate answers.

D.By talking about their dream.

【3】What can we learn about the participants in the latest study?

A.They like sleeping in the daytime.

B.They remember their dreams clearly.

C.They do exactly as they’re told during sleep.

D.They show higher response in the deepest sleep.

【4】What does Mélanie Strauss mainly tell us in the last paragraph?

A.The limitation of using EEG.

B.A cure for specific diseases.

C.The progress of the sleep research.

D.A method of detecting sleep

29、Picture this scene, a 6-year-old girl is alone on a raft, with no lifejacket, 200 yards from the shore with the winds whipping up the water. She is pointing at her cousins, and yelling out, “They are drowning!” Your eyes scan left only to see a three-year-old above the surface of the water and you realize two hands are holding her up, the hands of 14-year-old Mallory, who is struggling below the surface of the water.

Three seventeen-year-olds from Salt Lake City, Tiana Skeen, Caitlin Caldwell and Jessica Osterloh, were on the lake for fun in the sun at Bear Lake when they heard the cry for help and saw this terrifying scene. The teens witnessed the three young girls in this very dangerous situation. The teens reacted quickly and swam out to save the girls while crying out toward jet skiers and people on the beach for help. Fourteen-year-old Mallory was struggling to hold her little cousin Rylee above water. The teens rescued Rylee just in time but couldn’t find Mallory. Meanwhile, 6-year-old Sydney was floating away on the raft with no lifejacket. The girls flagged down a jet ski to get her and bring her back to the beach.

The three teen heroines (女英雄) saved the 3-year-old and the 6-year-old, but they feel Mallory is the real heroine, as she held her 3-year-old cousin above the water until the teens were able to rescue Rylee. Mallory was finally found, but she died on the way to the hospital.

Now, the teen heroines strongly remind everyone to wear a life jacket when on the water.

【1】What was Mallory doing, when the accident happened?

A. She was crying out for help on a raft.

B. She was trying her best to catch a raft.
