六、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Australia is the greatest island in the world. It is to the south of the equator. So when it is summer in our country, it is cold winter in Australia.

Australia is big, but the population  there is thin. The population is the same as that of Shanghai, a city of China. Australia is a young, diverse nation and the Australian people come from many different countries.

Australia has many, many sheep. After a short drive from town, you will see sheep around you. You can also find a kangaroo which has a “bag” below its chest. The mother kangaroo keeps its babies in the “bag”.

Australia is considered to be a relaxed, informal society. When greeting others, students and young people usually say “Hello” or “Hi”. Sometimes they say “How’s it going?” or “G day”. In more formal (正式的) situations they usually shake hands the first time they meet. “Good morning”, “Good afternoon” or “Pleased to meet you” are formal greetings. English is Australia’s national language.

22、   Animals do many different things to get through the winter. Some of them migrate. They travel to other places where the weather is warmer or they can find food.

Many birds migrate in autumn. Because the trip can be dangerous, some travel in large groups. For example, wild geese fly in noisy, "V"-shaped groups. Other kinds of birds fly alone.

Some animals stay active in winter. They must change themselves as the weather changes. Many change their doing or their bodies. For example, snowshoe rabbits grow white fur to help them hide in the snow.

Water makes good protection for many animals. When the weather gets cold, they move to the bottom of lakes and rivers. Frogs and many fish hide under rocks or fallen leaves. Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water, and frogs can breathe through their skin.

Every type of insect has its own life cycle and that is the way it grows and changes. Different insects spend the winter in different forms of their lives. Some insects also spend the winter without moving. Some insects spend the winter as pupae().Other insects die after laying eggs in autumn. The eggs change into new insects in spring and everything begins all over again.

24、   Do you know how to play a game called “Musical Chairs”? It is easy to play and most people enjoy it. All you need are some chairs, some people and some way of making music. You may use a piano or any other musical instrument(音乐乐器), if someone can play it. You may use a tape recorder. You can even use a radio.

Put the chairs in a line. The chairs may be put in twos, back to back. A better way is to have the chairs in one row with each chair facing in the opposite direction to the chair next to it.

The game is easy. When the music starts, the players walk round the chairs. Everyone goes in the same direction, of course, they should walk in time to the music. If the music is fast they should walk quickly. If the music is slow, they should walk slowly.

The person playing music cannot see the people in the game. When the music stops, the players try to sit on the chairs. If a person cannot find a chair to sit on, he drops out. Then, before the music starts again, one chair must be taken away. When the music stops again, one more player will be out.

At last, there will be two players and one chair. The one who sits on the chair when the music stops is the winner.
