二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Chokwe Selassie, aged 13, is working hard to help drivers avoid potholes(坑洼). The eighth-grader was inspired to kick off his creation on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. He decided to do something about the pothole problem in his city.

Chokwe developed the app with his friends Rodriguez Ratliff and Emmanuel Brooks. When the app detects a pothole, it is highlighted in red. And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you with a beep. Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes and look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them.

The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson, already stored in a database of the city’s 311 call system. Through the call system, citizens dial 3-1-1 to report non-emergency problems which include potholes. Chokwe and his friends determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test the prototype.

While developing the app, the boys took part in a Minority Male Makers Program sponsored by Verizon and held at Jackson State University. They learned 3D printing and design, and how to create apps. Through the program Chokwe and his friends received encouragement and guidance.

Although the app isn’t yet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve the app. He hopes to add more to it until it spreads all over the country.

A. To scold the road builders.

B. To introduce their bad luck.

C. To tell the inspiration for the app.

D. To warn the danger of careless driving.

2What is the app used to do?

A. Warn drivers about potholes.

B. Help drivers obey traffic rules.

C. Stop drivers using mobile phones.

D. Tell drivers to avoid red lights.

3How does the app work through the 311 call system?

A. By replying to citizens’ calls.

B. By broadcasting traffic accidents.

C. By settling non- emergency problems.

D. By using its information about potholes.

4Which can be Chokwe’s future target?

A. Encouraging more kids to create apps.

B. Taking part in more learning programs.

C. Making the app available for sale online.

D. Making the app include streets nationwide.

22、In the world of online shopping, many online purchases are based on careful consideration of star ratings and product reviews left by complete strangers. But should you trust customer reviews when deciding what to purchase? And do these mysterious reviewers have your best interests in mind? Here’s what you need to know.

Consumers today are skeptical, says Zach Pardes at review platform Trustpilot. “We live in a time when trust is completely under attack,” Pardes says. “So people are reading reviews and consuming them more than ever before, but I think there is a healthy skepticism at times of what they’re reading. Fake reviews do exist. Fake reviews include, but aren’t limited to, robot-generated reviews and reviews that are influenced by the seller.”

Of course, not all user reviews you read online are fake. High-quality reviews are a valuable too when making a variety ol purchases. Pardes says Trustpilot features a team in place to detect and remove fake reviews. Perhaps one of the best-known review websites is Yelp. Yelp takes measures to ensure “high quality content,” says Katheen Liu, a company spokes person. That includes allowing Yelp’s community of business owners and users to fag content that may go against the site’s terms of service.

Since user reviews do provide helpful information, reviews as a whole shouldn’t be repudiated. But how can you tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not? It’s close to impossible for the everyday consumer. But if you conduct your investigations carefully, you can make an informed purchase.

Check more than one review source. Pardes advises consumers to read reviews on multiple platforms.“If you’re about to book a $10,000 vacation, you’d never rely only on the photos and the reviews posted by that hotel’s marketing team,” he says. “You’re going to want to use a third-party independent resource.” Read more than a handful of reviews. Pardes says there is “safety in numbers.” Question perfection. Pardes says consumers shouldn’t trust reviews that show only five stars.“Nobody’s perfect, so you can’t possibly have a perfect five-star review in every single category of your business,” he says.

【1】What can be inferred from paragraph 2?

A.Consumers have lost trust in sellers.

B.Consumers are often influenced by sellers.

C.Consumers often fail to recognize fake reviews.

D.Consumers are cautious of product reviews now.

【2】What do Yelp and Trustpilot have in common?

A.Both hire professionals to rate companies.

B.Both produce robot-generated reviews.

C.Both serve mainly business owners.

D.Both aim to offer real user reviews.

【3】What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.A fake review

B.A review website

C.The measure

D.The high-quality content

【4】What does the underlined word “repudiated” in Pragaph 4 mean?

A.Overestimated.

B.Dismissed.

C.Hidden.

D.Blamed.

【5】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.How to get the most out of online reviews

B.The significance of informed purchases

C.Where to look for reliable reviews

D.The truth behind five star ratings

23、   Scientists don’t know yet whether cell phones are bad for the brain.1

In the experiment, the 47 participants may have looked a little strange. Each of them had two Samsung cell phones tied to his or her head—one on each ear.2  The phone on the right  ear played a message for 50 minutes, but the participants couldn’t hear it because the sound was off. After 50 minutes with two phone attached to their heads, the participants were given PET scans. The PET scan is a way to take a three-dimensional picture of how the inside of the bodyworks.

The PET scan showed that the left side of each participant’s brain hadn’t changed from the way it was before the experiment.3 These right-side brain  cells were  using  almost  as  much glucose as the brain uses when a person is talking. This suggests that brain cells there were active even without the person hearing or talking anything. This activity, the scientists say, was probably touched off by radiation from the phone.

4 They release different amounts of radiation depending on whether a person  is  talking or listening, the type of phone, the number of people using phones nearby, and the distance to the nearest cell phone tower. All of these changes make it difficult to collect evidence about any health risks of cell phones, since exposure to radiation can vary.

So for those who don’t want to wait to find out for sure whether cell phones are bad for the brain, there are ways to talk more safely.5

A.The phone on the left ear was off.

B.So an experiment was done to attempt to find it out.

C.People should avoid having a long conversation by using cell phones.

D.Cell phones do not always give out the same amount of energy.

E.You can have short conversations, use a speakerphone to keep the phone away from your head.

F.The right side of the brain, however, had used more glucose, which provided fuel to brain cells.

G.From the PET scan the differences between the two sides of the brain were observed.
