27、   Organic foods are produced according to certain production standards, meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, or chemical fertilizers and that they were processed without food additives. Livestock are raised without the routine use of antibiotics or growth hormones. In most countries, organic produced foods must not be genetically modified. They may also be required to be produced using energy-saving technologies and packaged using recyclable materials when possible.

Early consumers interested in organic food would look for non-chemically treated, fresh or minimally processed food. They mostly had to buy directly from growers: “Know your farmer, know your food” was the motto. Personal definitions of what constituted “organic” were developed through firsthand experience: by talking to farmers, seeing farm conditions, and farming activities. Historically, organic farms were relatively small family run farms—which is why organic food was once only available in small stores or farmers’ markets. However, since the early 1990s organic food has had growth rates of around 20% a year. As of April 2008, organic food accounts for 12% of food sales worldwide. Currently organic food production is legally regulated. Many countries require producers to obtain organic certification in order to mark food as organic.

Several studies have attempted to examine and compare conventional and organic systems of farming. The general consensus is that, in the short term, organic farming is less damaging for the following reasons:

●Organic farms do not release synthetic pesticides into the environment—some of which have the potential to harm soil, water and local wildlife.

●Organic farms are better than conventional farms at sustaining diverse ecosystems, i.e., populations of plants and insects, as well as animals.

●Organic farms are more energy efficient and produce less waste.

Another report published in March 2008 by The Organic Centre claims that organic food is on average 25% more nutritious than conventional food.

However, many critics believe that the increased land needed to farm organic food could potentially destroy the rainforests and wipe out many ecosystems. And organic products cost 10 to 40% more than similar conventionally produced products. Processed organic foods in supermarkets are 65% more expensive.

【1】Early consumers knew what food was “organic” by________.

A.the “certified organic” label tag

B.firsthand experience

C.its packaging

D.examining its organic certification

【2】We can infer that ________.

A.in America, organic food can only be bought in small stores or farmers’ markets

B.organic food is produced by large-scale farms

C.organic food is also available in large supermarkets at present

D.organic food is often beautifully packaged

【3】According to the passage, organic food is considered as________.

A.junk food

B.delicious snacks

C.conventional food

D.green food

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.The disadvantages of organic food.

B.The cost of organic food

C.The benefits of organic food

D.Organic food and conventional food

【5】Which of the following statements does NOT support the view that organic farming is more environment friendly?

A.Organic farms are more energy efficient and produce less waste.

B.Organic food is generally thought to be more nutritious.

C.Organic farms are better than conventional farms at maintaining varieties of plants, insects and animals

D.Organic farms do not release synthetic pesticides into the environment.

28、   Advice to “sleep on it” could be well founded, scientists say. After a good night’s sleep a problem that couldn’t be solved the night before can often appear more manageable, although the evidence until now has been anecdotal. But researchers at the University of Luebek in Germany have designed an experiment that shows a good night’s sleep can improve insight and problem-solving.

“If you have some newly-got memories in your brain, sleep acts on these memories and restructures them, so that after sleep the insight into problem which you could not solve before increases,” said Dr. Jan Born, a neuroscientist, at the university. To test the theory, they taught volunteers two simple rules to help them turn a string of numbers into a new order. There was also a third, hidden rule, which could help them increase their speed in solving the problem. The researchers divided the volunteers into two groups: half were allowed to sleep after the training while the rest were forced to stay awake.

Dr. Jan Born and his team noticed that the group that had slept after the training were twice as likely to figure out the third rule as the other group. “Sleep helped,” Born said in a telephone interview. “The important thing is that you have to have a memory representation in your brain of the problem you want to solve and then you sleep, so it can act on the problem.

“But Born admitted that he and his team don’t know how restructuring of memories occurs or what governs it. Pierre Maquet and Perrine Ruby of the University of Liege in Belgium said the experimental evidence supports the anecdotal suggestions that sleep can help develop creative thinking. Although the role of sleep in human creativity will still be a mystery, the research gives people good reason to fully respect their periods of sleep, they added.

1The underlined phrase “sleep on it” in Paragraph 1 probably means _____.

A.to get as much sleep as possible

B.to go on sleeping without being disturbed

C.to delay deciding something until the next day

D.to sleep till after the time you usually get up in the morning

2What is the purpose of the experiment?

A.To test problem-solving ability in sleep. B.To discover people’s insight during sleep.

C.To prove a good sleep helps solve problems. D.To discuss how to improve sleeping quality.

3How did Jan Born and his team carry out the experiment?

A.Through comparison. B.Through interviews.

C.Through talks. D.Through imagination.

4What can we learn about the experimental evidence?

A.It helps scientists control memories. B.It explains the role of sleep in human.

C.It tells us the role of sleep is a mystery. D.It shows sleep does good to creative thinking.

29、   A new study by the British government has discovered the mental well-being of the country’s teenage girls has worsened.

The survey, which included 30,000 14-year-old students, showed 37 percent of the girls with psychological stress, rising from 34 percent in 2010. British boys’ stress level was actually seen to fall over the same period, from 17 percent to 15 percent. The report’s authors pointed out the “arrival of the social media age” could be a major contributing factor for increasing stress among teenage British girls.

“The adolescent years are a time of rapid physical, cognitive and emotional development,” Pam Ramsden, a lecturer in psychology at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom, wrote in a recent blog post, “Teenagers interact with people in order to learn how to become competent adults. In the past, they would engage with parents, teachers and other adults in their community as well as extended family members and friends. Now we can also add social media to that list of social and emotional development.” Throughout adolescence, girls and boys develop characteristics like confidence and self-control. Since teenage brains have not completely developed, teens don’t have the cognitive awareness to keep from posting inappropriate content. Furthermore, this content can easily be circulated far and wide with disastrous implications.

“Social media can also feed into girls’ insecurities about their appearance.” Ramsden said. These sites are often filled with images of people with body type unattainable to the normal person. However, these images and the messages tied to them creep into social standards.

“Social media allows girls to make comparisons among friends as well as celebrities and then provides them with solutions’such as extreme dieting tips and workouts to reach their goals,” Ramsden said. “Concerns about body image can negatively impact their quality of life preventing them from having healthy relationships and taking up time that could be better spent developing other aspects of their personalities.”

1What is a change of teenagers’ interaction with others according to the text?

A. The added communicator of talking. B. The new way of interacting.

C. The different place of meeting. D. The unusual feeling of communicating.

2How do the images about fine body shape influence the girls?

A. They offer the girls social standards to follow.

B. They help the girls work out and set up their goals.

C. They bring the girls more energy to build healthy relationships.

D. They lead the girls to spend more time on their appearance.

3What may be Ramsden’s opinion according to the text?

A. The teens should get rid of the bad effects of social media.

B. People should follow the celebrities’example.

C. It’s not worthwhile for people to care about their body image.

D. It’s necessary for teenagers to make comparisons among friends.

4What may be the best title for the text?

A. How to deal with girl’s interaction

B. The well-being of girls in Britain

C. The social media’s effect on girls

D. How to interact with girls in Britain

四、短文填空(共4题,共 20分)

34、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

What Makes an Ideal Friend?

To say what an ideal friend is is not the easiest thing to do. Each person has his or her own opinion of what one would be. However, speaking generally, there are certain features that most people consider characteristic of an ideal friend. Loyal, trustworthy, and open to show weakness are common qualities that the majority of people attach to ideal friends.

Loyalty is a usual quality given to ideal friends. According to Psychology Today, “Loyalty is valued early on in all of our relationships, from the time we make our first friendships. We need friends who won’t spill our secrets to others, gossip about us, or allow others to criticize us”. The worst action between friends is not keeping one’s word.

Ideal friends are also usually referred to as being trustworthy. In a statement by Psychology Today, they say that, “Trustworthiness is often the “make or break” element in any interpersonal relationship. Any unfaithful action, regardless of recognized degree, can destroy a relationship. Trustworthiness consists of several elements, including honesty, dependability, and loyalty, and while each is important to successful relationships, honesty and dependability have been identified as the most vital in the area of friendships”. In light of this, a universal complaint of friends is a lack of honesty, and this is at the heart of being trustworthy.

In line with being honest is also the ability to show one’s weaknesses. According to the Book of Life, “The ideal friend doesn’t try to prove how powerful and successful they are; on the contrary, quite often they let us know awkward and potentially embarrassing things about themselves. They show how much they trust us by confessing failings and sorrows which would open them up to possible disgrace from the world beyond. They offer us the gift of their defenselessness”. That openness is treasured, as to be close to an individual, one must be willing to share his or her true feelings and states.
