26、It was May 23, 2016. Arnot, the 32-year-old mountain guide, reached the top of Everest without the use of oxygen (O2) equipment. It was achieved after seven years, three previous attempts, and fourteen straight hours of climbing.
After 15 minutes at the top, Arnot began her descent (下坡). Eight hours later, she reached the camp at 7, 600 meters and became the first American woman—and only the seventh woman ever—to successfully reach Mount Everest without oxygen equipment.
Arnot didn’t start climbing until she was 19 years old. Money was tight in her family, and climbing mountains never occurred in her mind. After graduating from college, Arnot was invited by her friend to climb a mountain. “It totally changed my life”, says Arnot. “I always know that if you want something, you can achieve it, but knowing what you want is a whole different thing,” she says. “I am athletic but not competitive. After my first climbing, I knew immediately that mountains are what I want—as that is where I felt home for the first time in my life.”
After that first climb, she devoted herself to learning how to climb and move through mountain. It was during her second trip to Everest in 2009 that she first set her sights on a no-oxygen attempt. However, while hiking into Everest Base Camp that year, she hurt her leg and wasn’t able to climb without oxygen. In 2013 she nearly made it to the top, but was forced to take oxygen at 8,504 meters while helping another climber.

27、Mind Your Manners
Around the world, people have different ideas about what good table manners are. In India, for example, people only eat with their right hands. You take food from one dish on the table, usually a kind of bread or rice, mix it with food from another dish and then put it in your mouth. Your left hand stays still. Eating with your left hand is very rude!
In western countries, people do not usually share the same dishes,. Everyone has his or her own plate of food, You eat with a knife and fork and you should not wave them around when you are not eating. In addition, you should try not to be noisy when eating.【1】
When you go to some restaurants in different parts of the world, it is important to know what people think is rude. For example, in China it is OK to be noisy in a restaurant. In fact, if a restaurant is not noisy, you may think it is not very good.【2】If a table is too noisy, other customers might not be happy.
【3】In China, one person usually pays for every one. In western countries, when friends eat together, they usually share the cost. This is called "going Dutch". In addition, when westerners pay the check, they usually leave some money for the waiter. This is called“leaving a tip." Not leaving a tip is very rude. In US, it's common to leave tips of 10%, 15% or 20% of the check. The amount depends on how good the waiter was. 【4】
The way people eat food is different around the world, but you can find the same kinds of food in many countries.【5】
A.Good waiters can get a lot of money!
B.People think that is bad table manners!
C.Guests usually leave the tips under the plates.
D.Paying for the meal is also different from country to country.
E.However, in many western countries, restaurants are quiet places.
F.Chinese and Italian foods, for example, are popular all over the world.
G.Although good manners always make you look good, you can always follow your hosts if you're not sure what to do.
28、 E-cigarettes lead to as many lung diseases as tobacco products, a new study has found. The report from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill compared saliva(唾液) samples from tobacco smokers, e-cigarette smokers and nonsmokers. Researchers found that e-cigarette smokers were likely to develop dangerous proteins associated with lung diseases. The study adds to a growing body of evidence proving that e-cigarettes might not be the perfect alternative smokers addicted to tobacco are looking for.
Last year a Surgeon General’s report claimed that the use of e-cigarettes among a certain group of people jumped 900 percent from 2011to 2015 and more studies were carried out to research their side effects. That same year, the FDA put e-cigarettes in the tobacco products the administration monitors.
Previous research from UCLA has proven that e-cigarettes can cause lifelong damage to one’s heart, and that one puff (吸一口烟) of an e-cigarette is all it takes to increase one’s risk of having a heart attack. For the new study UNC researchers observed 15 e-cigarette users, 14 cigarette smokers and 15 nonsmokers. The study revealed that e-cigarette smokers have raised levels of NET-related proteins in their airways, the increased levels of which can lead to lung illnesses, making it difficult for patients to breathe.
Study author Dr Mehmet Keismer said, “There is confusion about whether e-cigarettes are ‘safer’ than cigarettes because the potential adverse effects of e-cigarettes are only beginning to be studied. Our results suggest that e-cigarettes might be just as bad as cigarettes. ” Dr Keismer also stressed that e-cigarettes come with their own harmful risks along with those linked to tobacco, which challenges the concept that switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes is a healthier alternative.
A citizen named Dyclna said, “The e-cigarettes probably make you cough less, but nobody gives a warning about your lungs. For producers, it’s just a money thing — it’s just about getting profits from it. The problem is that our government just stands there with its hands behind the back. ”
【1】Why did the FDA list e-cigarettes into monitored products?
A.It might have realized the harm of them. B.It wanted to improve their quality.
C.It aimed to reduce their illegal sales. D.It might be warned by the government.
【2】What does Dyclna mainly want to express?
A.E-cigarettes are safer than regular ones.
B.E-cigarettes can only benefit few people.
C.Producers make a high profit from e-cigarettes.
D.Governments are to blame for e-cigarettes’ consumption.
【3】What is the best title for the text?
A.E-cigarettes: A new way of smoking.
B.E-cigarettes: A better way than tobacco?
C.E-cigarettes: The harmful proteins it produces.
D.E-cigarettes: The urgent need of government control.
29、 To stop the spread of COVID﹣19, many countries are practicing social distancing (社交隔离). This means people should stay at home as much as possible, as well as stay at least 2 meters away from other people when in public, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Social distancing also refers to other ways of preventing the spread of the virus. These include studying online instead of going to school and canceling (取消) public activities.
Many countries have set strict rules for social distancing. In Australia, for example, people who meet indoors must follow the "one person per four square meters" rule. This means that if a room has an area of 40 square meters, there should be no more than ten people in the room. In Singapore, people who don't keep a distance of 1 meter in public areas may need to pay a fine of up to $10,000 (50,000 yuan) or up to six months in prison.
There are also some more creative rules. In Panama, for example, men and women must leave their homes on different days, two hours at a time. In some Colombian towns, people can only go outside at certain times based on (基于) the last number of their national ID number. For example, people with an ID number ending in 0, 7 or 4 can leave the house on Monday, while those with an ID number ending 1,8 or 5 can go outside on Tuesday.

However, a recent survey conducted in the USA shows that 80 per cent of Internet users 【4】 it mostly to search for answers to questions. The second most common use of the Internet, for 79 per cent of Internet users, is to find out information about hobbies. These statistics prove that gathering information is the 【5】 use for the Internet.
35、阅读短文,根据短文内容及首字母提示,在空白处填入一个适当的单词。
Wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic p【1】 the spread of the deadly virus. But it is also i【2】. For one, we can no longer unlock our phones using facial recognition since a good part of our face is c【3】.

Even though the update still won’t recognize your masked face, it makes the whole process f【7】. While the old system wouldn’t allow access t【8】 the passcode screen before three failed face scan attempts, iOS13.5 will send you straight to the passcode screen when you swipe up.
It might only s【9】 you a few seconds, but those few seconds “benefit public health by eliminating the temptation for people to r【10】 their masks in order to unlock their device”.
36、阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Smell the flowers before you go to sleep and you may just end up with rosy dreams. Have a whiff of rotten(腐烂的)eggs during the night and your dreams may be【1】(pleasant). So says researcher Dr. Boris Stuck, 【2】invited sleeping volunteers to a rose vs. rotten egg test in the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany. The subjects didn’t dream about roses【3】eggs, but rather he found that what they smelt affected the emotions of【4】(they) dreams.

37、Directions: Complete the following sentences by using the proper form of the words or expressions given in the frame. Each one can only be used once.
Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems? Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 【1】 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.
When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internet, they appeared to 【2】that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.
While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”,there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to【3】. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.
“Users are becoming slightly more 【4】what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”
But 【5】no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.
Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 【6】 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.
Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!,said that it was “the first step to【7】passwords”. He said it was a(n)【8】that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.
It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or,“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.
“We are, for the most part,predictably【9】when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 【10】, and so do password crackers.
