二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   A business school in Paris will soon begin using artificial intelligence and facial analysis to determine whether students are paying attention in class. The software, called Nestr, is used in two online classes at the ESG business school beginning in September.

The idea, according to LCA founder Marcel Saucet, is to use the data that Nestor collects to improve the performance both students and professors. The software uses students' webcams(网络摄像头)to analyze eye movements and facial expressions and determine whether students are paying attention to a video lecture. Professors would also be able to identify moments when students' attention declined, which could help to improve their teaching.

Advocates for AI in education say the technology could be used as a digital tutor that would adapt to a student's individual needs, and help develop more effective studying habits. Such software could also help teachers by providing quantitative(定量的)feedback on the effectiveness of their teaching.

But AI programs rely on massive information of personal data. and there are concerns over how such data would be treated. Saucet says Nestor won't store any of the video footage(片段)it captures and that his company has no plans to sell any other data the software collects. In addition, some are concerned that AI may one day replace teachers.

Rose Luckin, a professor at the University College London Knowledge Lab, says AI could unlock the "black box of learning" by providing information on how and when learning happens. But she cautions(告诫)against adopting new technologies that, while alluring, may not actually respond to critical needs. She thinks a program like Nestor could be useful for students who take classes remotely, since "there isn’t a human there watching them". So Luckin sees the technology more as an assistant, rather than a replacement.

Sauce agrees. "Human contact is not going to go away, " he says. "There will always be professors."

1How does Nestor work to tell whether students are paying attention?

A.By controlling the thoughts of students

B.By analyzing eye movements and facial expressions

C.By collecting all the data of students' performance in class

D.By reminding professors to pay more attention to students

2What does the underlined word "alluring" probably mean in the fifth paragraph?

A.Attractive

B.Controversial

C.Limited

D.Alarming

3What do people concern about Nestor?

A.It will teach courses in place of teachers.

B.Nestor won't store any information it collects.

C.It can prevent students from more effective studying habits.

D.It can't benefit the company by selling students' data it collects.

4What is Rose Luckin's attitude towards using Nestor?

A.Favorable

B.Doubtful

C.Objective

D.Disapproving

27、Recognized as "the goddess scientist",Ning Yan(or Nieng Yan),42,is a leading biology researcher at Princeton University in the US. On April 30,she was included among 100 new members and 25 foreign associates into The National Academy of Sciences,a famous scientific institution that aims to recognize outstanding research in the US.

Yan is a rising star in the science world and her resume(履历)is impressive. After graduating from Tsinghua University and Princeton, she was invited to set up her own laboratory at Tsinghua in 2007. At age 30,she became one of China's youngest-ever female professors.

It was a long road to get where she is now. She told People magazine that she always believes that scientists need to have a pure mind and determination.

Yan likes to work at night, because she can focus when the outside is quiet. She also works at least 14 hours a day,but she's energetic, because research is the most "comfortable” job for her, according to an interview with People magazine.

This devotion to her work probably helped Yan in her research to identify the structures of proteins in cells' plasma membranes, which puzzled scientists for half a century. Her achievements got her listed among the journal Nature's Science Stars of China in 2016.

Yan also enjoys TV dramas and classic novels. Surprisingly, the novel Journey to the West inspired her to become a structural biologist. In the book, the Monkey King turns into other animals. She wondered what it would be like to change herself. Luckily. Yan now lives in that world every day, exploring how proteins work at the level of atoms. “It was almost destined(命中注定的)that I would become a structural biologist,"she said in an interview with Nature.

As she realizes her own dreams,Yan tries to encourage more women to follow careers(职业)in science. In her eyes, there is no difference between men and women in the scientific fields.

“Women can work as excellently as men and live the way they choose to,"she said in a public interview.

【1】What made Ning Yan become a member of the National Academy of Sciences?

A.Her social background.

B.Her impressive wisdom.

C.Her first-class education.

D.Her outstanding research.

【2】Which of the following played a role in Yan becoming a structural biologist?

A.People magazine.

B.Journey to the West.

C.The journal Nature.

D.Science Stars of China.

【3】Ning Yan would probably agree that_________

A.scientists can win success by working at night

B.women can match men in scientific achievements

C.more women should be allowed to take up science

D.scientists should enjoy TV dramas and classic novels

【4】What can we learn from Ning Yan's story?

A.It is never too late to learn.

B.Many hands make light work.

C.Actions speak louder than words.

D.Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.

28、   My cousin is nine years old, a little bit fat and doesn't do really well at school. As the youngest in the household, she is heavily teased, and thus has developed some resistance and distrust towards adults, who usually don't put high hopes in her.

Yesterday we went to an art exhibition together. There were paintings from kids with disabilities. My little girl has keen eyes, for the paintings she liked most were also the best of the show. She also voluntarily helped to arrange the chairs and table for a sharing session, painted by herself alongside new friends while I attended the sharing, and cheerfully helped me to get my bag from another room, something that doesn't happen often at home as she's usually glued to her iPad.

We went to buy books together. I bought a book written by a mom telling about her journey with her autistic(自闭症的) son. On the bus back home, I briefly introduced the book to my cousin, and to my surprise she was truly interested. She kept asking me to tell more stories about this friend in the book who struggles with small things in life. This is the first time I've seen her so interested in a topic. Usually when she talks to me, she describes events at school and at home without a clear focus. I'm very touched that the life of an unknown stranger has found its way into this little girl's heart.

I'm very thankful for the power of books, for the beauty that my cousin showed to me, and for the time we had together. I pray that I can keep seeing clearly the wonderful things in her, so that whenever the not-so-kind world puts her down, I can remind her how truly wonderful she has always been.

1Why does the little girl have a bad attitude to some adults?

A.Because she doesn't do really well at school.

B.Because she is the youngest in the household.

C.Because the adults constantly make fun of her.

D.Because the adults don’t put any hopes in her.

2The underlined word in Paragraph Two can be replaced by .

A.charming B.sharp

C.loving D.pretty

3Whom does “an unknown stranger” in Paragraph Three refer to?

A.The autistic son. B.The writer’s cousin.

C.The mother. D.The writer.

29、“EDUCATION is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school,” Albert Einstein once said. Confused? You’re still in school, so you are forgiven. Here, Einstein is referring directly to the idea of learning as a whole, rather than the simple acquisition of knowledge. Once someone has left school, they are not just meant to carry around a certificate stating their achievements; they should also have a way of thought that allows them to continue navigating their way through their entire life.

Yet in China, and many other Asian nations, much emphasis is placed on academic achievements, like grades or awards. Some of this can be attributed to Confucius and the imperial examination system in ancient China. There is nothing to be said against those students who pursue higher scores and more awards — striving for excellence is an important part of professionalism in any industry. But it’s really a pity to know that some people go out of their way just to gain these labels.

I’m sure many of us have heard of the Zhai Tianlin incident from a while ago. The already famous and accomplished actor, wishing to “rise above” his peers through academic achievements, has attempted to take shortcuts to success. Due to one of his papers’ having been found to be 40% plagiarized, Zhai has been expelled by Peking University from its postdoctoral stations. Beijing Film Academy has also revoked Zhai’s doctoral acting degree after he was found to have committed academic misconduct.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Zhai’s acting career is brought to a halt (停止) as well. So disastrous is the label of “academic misconduct” that a single case could ruin your entire credibility. When a student intentionally cheats through university, the value of the degree and the morals of the individual are diminished. This lack of credibility then follows you into the workforce and can impact your professional goals. For example, nobody wants a doctor who cheated to get his medical degree to perform a life or death surgery on them, or a bad engineer to build bridges.

At the very least, I want you all to remember that the entire point of an education is to foster a love for learning, not to gain some labels. As one of the first quotations by Confucius that I learned goes, “Isn’t it a pleasure to study and practice what you have learned?”

【1】According to Albert Einstein, the purpose of education is to ______.

A.help students acquire knowledge

B.help students gain more certificates

C.help students achieve their professional goals

D.help students develop a lifetime passion for learning

【2】We can learn from the article that the author ______.

A.thinks that students should not achieve higher scores

B.believes that China’s education system has stopped people from pursuing the pleasure of study

C.quite approves of Confucius’ educational beliefs

D.feels concerned about Zhai Tianlin’s future after he was confirmed to have committed academic misconduct

【3】What does the author mainly want to express in Paragraph 4 ?

A.the author’s attitude toward Zhai Tianlin incident

B.the importance of honesty and moral behavior in academic settings

C.the consequences of academic misconduct

D.the qualities that a person needs in the workplace

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze — dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up;the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was suddenly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed 倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

40、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I arrived at 6 a.m. in the large hospital kitchen,Rose was already checking name tags on the trays(托盘). “Hi,I'm Janet. ”I tried to sound cheerful, although I already knew Rose's reputation for being impossible to work with. "I'm scheduled to work with you this week."

Rose stopped what she was doing and peered over her reading glasses. I could tell from her expression she wasn't pleased to see a student worker. “What do you want me to do?Start the coffee?"I asked.

Rose coldly nodded and went back to checking name tags.

I filled the 40-cup pot with water and began making the coffee when Rose yelled,“That's not the way to make coffee. ”She stepped in and took over.

Nothing I did pleased her. All morning, her eagle eyes missed nothing and her sharp words hurt.

Totally exhausted,I trudged the six blocks home late that June afternoon. As a third year university student working my way through school,I had never before met anyone like Rose.

Fighting back tears,I wrestled with my dilemma alone in my room. "What shall I do?”The answer caught me completely by surprise. I needed to love Rose.

Working with Rose the next morning,I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things Rose's way as much as possible. As I worked,I silently began to surround Rose with a warm blanket of love.

Over the next few days,an amazing thing began to happen. My focus shifted from what she was doing to me and I started seeing Rose as the hurting person she was. Then her icy tension began to melt away.

Throughout the rest of the summer,we had numerous opportunities to work together. Each time, she seemed truly happy to see me. Her bitterness gave way as she started opening up. As I worked with this lonely woman,I listened to her, something no one else had done. I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems.

The days slipped by quickly as I finished the last several weeks of my summer job. I soon would be returning as a full-time university student and say goodbye to Rose.
