二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、A few weeks ago I paid a visit to the UK. The moment I reached Heathrow airport, I was attracted by all the language differences between American and British English. Instead of reading “exit”, the signs read “way out”. The announcer said “alight” instead of “get off” the plane.

My first stop in the UK was the British museum and I was particularly interested in Room 41. In that room, I saw the oldest sentence ever found written in Old English. Archeologists (考古学家) believe it is from between 450 and 480 AD.

The next stop was Westminster Abbey. At the Poets’ Corner I saw graves of famous writers, such as Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson. The list can go on and on. Another thing on the Abbey grounds that you should not miss is a colorful glass window in St. Margaret’s Church, as you walk up to the Abbey. The window, about halfway up the left side of the church, honors William Caxton. He was the first person to bring the printing press to England and set up his printing business near the Abbey, probably because he was likely to get work from the government offices in the area. Caxton may not be as well-known as the writers in Poets’ Corner, but he played a very important part in standardizing English.

My final stop was the Tower of London, which was the symbol of power of the people who changed English. This castle was built by William the Conqueror after he defeated King Harold II in the Battle of Hastings during the Norman Invasion in 1066. After the Normans took over England, the official language became French for hundreds of years, and this was the time when many French words entered the English language especially words related to upper-class life such as words about government and cooking.

So that was my trip.

27、   Each year thousands of U.S. families open their homes and hearts to student visitors from all over the world. In a homestay, students can observe, learn and experience a new lifestyle and culture, while practicing English skills in a home environment.

Successful homestay experiences can help to ease homesickness. Often students feel that they have found a second family who loves and cares for them. This experience can also help students make a smooth transition into an American university or enable them to reach a future career goal.

Hosts involve their student guests in day-to day family activities and also include them in social gatherings such as summertime barbecues, holiday celebrations, or trips to local attractions.

Homestay hosts will reflect the variety of the region in which they live. They may be single parents, retired couples, widows, or families with young children. They will come from different socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. What they will have in common is a desire to share their homes and their time with international students.

Usually, international visitors enjoy staying with hosts who have family members of similar ages or with similar interests. The homestay coordinator will consider a student's needs, interests and requests before matching the student with a host.

Living in a homestay will always require an adjustment period. There may be simple house rules or guidelines about Internet usage, laundry, television viewing, meal times, cleanliness, and money matters.

Universities that offer homestays programs set certain standards for hosts. For example, at the University of Delaware, all hosts living more than one mile from campus must provide students with transportation to and from campus every weekday. Hosts must also provide each student with a private, furnished room and access to a shared or private bathroom.

The homestay coordinators carefully screen host applicants to make sure they have a passion for hospitality and an interest in other cultures. Coordinators will also interview and visit applicants to determine the suitability of the living space and meet the family members. Regular meetings, phone calls, and emails keep the hosts up to date in order to keep high standards of operation within the homestays.

1What benefits do students who live in a homestay have?

A.They can experience a new lifestyle and culture. B.They can practice their English skills day and night.

C.They can be admitted to American universities. D.They can reach their future career goals easily.

2What do homestay hosts have in common?

A.A big house to hold holiday celebrations.

B.Enough space for having summertime barbecues.

C.A desire to share their homes and time with students.

D.Time for taking trips to local attractions with students.

3What will be taken into consideration before matching the students with the homestay?

A.The hosts' needs, interests and requests.

B.The students' needs, interests and requests.

C.The hosts' socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

D.The students and their family's education backgrounds.

4What are the last 3 paragraphs about?

A.Making house rules or guidelines. B.Setting certain standards for hosts.

C.Screening host applicants. D.Adjusting to the household.

28、Frederick Phiri is the junk-art king of Zambia: at just 22, he started to earn an international reputation for being able to make complex and elegant sculptures from scrap (废弃的) metal found in his community.

Phiri’s father died when he was starting primary school. Then his mother abandoned him and he had to stay with his grandfather. His grandfather paid for his schooling through primary school but when he entered secondary school, he had to get various jobs to pay for his fees. Yet even in school, he was always drawing and making things in class.

After graduating, he did what he could to support himself by making animal sculptures from wires and sold them to tourists. His work was so popular that it caught the eye of Karen Beattie, director of Project Luangwa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to education and economic development in central Africa.

“I introduced him to a local welder (焊工),” Beattie told Newsweek.

In 2017, Phiri worked with welder Moses Mbewe during the rainy season, helping to make a complex set of doors for Project Luangwa. The piece sparked an idea in Beattie’s mind: “I handed him a bunch of scrap metal and said, ‘Make something with this.’ And he did. It was wonderful.”

Today, Phiri continues his art, using pieces of junk people bring him—keys, broken bike chains, old metal plugs and whatever scrap metal is lying around. He then turns the junk into abstract animals—elephants, cranes, giraffes, chameleons—and sells them at Project Luangwa headquarters. The community has recognized his talents.

“My dream is to earn enough to study art at the Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka and be able to make a living from it,” Phiri said “and then to make very large sculptures.”

【1】What is Phiri known for?

A.Serving his community.

B.Collecting works of art.

C.Being the king of Zambia.

D.Turning trash into treasure.

A.He had an unhappy childhood.

B.He paid for his primary school.

D.He missed school to do part-time jobs.

【3】How does Phiri feel about his future?

A.Uncertain.

29、Starbucks’ founder, Howard Schultz, came up with an idea for his coffee chain while drinking espresso (浓咖啡)in a bar. He took a good product, repackaged it and globalized it. But to many Italians, the coffee served by Starbucks and other branded stores is as far away from proper Italian coffee as you can get, despite the Italian-sounding offerings on their menus.

Now, I am part-Italian and like most Italians, I think that Italy represents the height of coffee culture, against the standard by which all coffee should be measured. My Italian friends and family hate the idea of adding a little sugar juice or other things to their valuable cappuccino (卡布奇诺).I have a coffee machine at home, which is to the Italian kitchen what the kettle is to the British. As far as I’m concerned, the cappuccinos, lattes (拿铁)and espressos served in branded coffee chains taste bitter, a low copy of the real thing.

You’d never ask for a latte in Italy. If you did, you’d get served a glass of milk. Coffee and espresso are the same in Italy. Then there’s the Australian “white coffee”, a halfway house between a Starbucks-style latte and a macchiato(玛奇朵). The “white coffee” has gone global so much that recently it replaced the cappuccino on Starbucks’ menu in some parts of the US.

What’s more, Italians don’t waste time around in coffee shop armchairs drinking cappuccinos while surfing the Internet. Still, when it comes to taste, Italians are trying to reclaim the ground. Part of the problem is the price of coffee. Most Italian bars will not charge more than one euro a cup, which means there isn’t the choice to purchase more high-quality coffee. Italian flavor is held back by the way the coffee is boiled.

I still think I’ll be sticking to home-made coffee from my trusted machine. And I’ll continue to drink it in the Italian way.

【1】What’s the purpose of telling the story of Starbucks in Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic of the passage.

B.To introduce the history of Starbucks.

C.To present the standard of good coffee.

D.To explain the key to the success of Starbucks.

A.home-made coffee is much cheaper

B.they can produce proper Italian coffee at home

D.the British like the kettle the same way as the Italians like coffee

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835-April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the 1 for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and 2 articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his 3 story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into 4 Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned 5 from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he 6 in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter, which failed because of its 7 and imprecision.
