二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、The Statue of Liberty is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom. It was extremely generous of the people of France to give it to the American people, especially as the money was raised by donations from the public who recognized what the countries had in common. After all, both nations had fought revolutions to secure their nationhood.

Nowadays, it seems as though the gift has been returned with interest with the foundation of Euro Disney near Paris. Nevertheless, many French people feel it symbolizes a kind of “cultural colonialism”. To tell the truth, I would not welcome the presence of such a theme park in the middle of England, for the same reason. Mind you, neither England nor France has ever been afraid to export their own culture and values.

Anyway, it is not difficult to understand why they chose to build Euro Disney near Paris. It is a geographically logical site, in the centre of continental Europe, right by the capital city with its own attractions and so on. All the same, was it a culturally logical decision? There is the issue of “cultural colonialism” which I have already mentioned. What’s more, do the French need Mickey Mouse when they have their own cartoon hero in the form of the brave little Gaul, Asterix? Euro Disney’s rival the Parc Asterix has proved a popular destination for families wanting a day out. By the way, Parc Asterix is an easy drive from Paris too. Millions of dollars have been poured into Euro Disney to provide a top class attraction but the thing is, can visitors expect an authentic American welcome? The answer must surely be “no”! There again, Euro Disney is a cheaper option for most Europeans than going all the way to the States.

All in all I would rather create theme parks which celebrated my own heroes than accept those from elsewhere. In a word, this is because it is not always possible to transport culture—like some wines they do not travel well. In the future I will take my family to Florida to Disney World and the Magic Kingdom.

However, until that day arrives we won't be going to Euro Disney. There is a time and place for everything.

【1】As for Euro Disney, many French people________.

A.are unhappy with it

B.show no interest in it

C.treat it with extreme caution

D.think it a reward for the Statue of Liberty

【2】The underlined word “rival” in paragraph 3 means________.

A.partner

B.competitor

C.neighbor

D.customer

【3】Which of the following is the author’s opinion?

A.Euro Disney can’t provide real American service.

B.Parc Asterix is more expensive than Euro Disney.

C.Theme parks should accept popular heroes.

D.American culture isn’t popular around the world.

【4】What can be the best title of the passage?

A.The Development of Euro Disney

B.French’s Argument against Euro Disney

C.The Popularity of Euro Disney

D.French’s Disagreement about American Culture

27、   It is well-known that twins are closer to each other than most brothers and sisters -- after all, they probably spend more time with each other. Parents of twins often notice that they develop special ways of communicating: they invent their own words and one can often finish the other's sentence. In exceptional(例外) circumstances(情况), this closeness becomes more extreme: they invent a whole language of their own, as in the case of Grace and Virginia Kennedy from Georgia in the USA, who communicated so successfully in their own special language that they did not speak any English at all until after they started school.

However, these special relationships are the result of lives spent almost entirely in each other's company. What happens when twins do not grow up together, when they are separated at birth for some reason? Are they just like any other strangers, or are there still special similarities between them? Professor Tom Bouchard of the University of Minnesota set out to find the answer to this question. He traced(追踪) sixteen pairs of twins, who were adopted by different families when they were babies, and often brought up in very different circumstances. Each twin was then interviewed about every small detail of their life.

The results of this research make a surprising reading. Many of the twins were found to have the same hobbies, many have suffered the same illnesses, and some have even had the same type of accident at the same point in their lives. One pair of middle-aged women arrived for their first meeting in similar dresses, another pair were wearing similar jewellery. The most incredible (unbelievable) similarities are to be found in the case of Jim Springer and Jim Lewis from Ohio in the USA. The story of the 'Jim Twins' made headline news across USA. Born to an immigrant woman in 1939, and adopted by different families at birth, both babies were named Jim by their new parents.

But what can be the explanation for these remarkable similarities? Is it all pure coincidence, or is the explanation in some way genetic? Research into the lives of twins is forcing some experts to admit that our personalities may be at least partly due to 'nature'. On the other hand, analysts are also anxious to emphasis(强调) that incredible coincidences do happen all the time, not just in the lives of twins.

1The case of Grace and Virginia Kennedy (Para. 1) is to show that ______.

A.twins communicate with each other in an unusual way.

B.twins are more likely to suffer from speaking problems.

C.most twins have exceptional abilities to invent a new language.

D.twins won’t have an effective communication until they go to school.

2The purpose of Tom Bouchard’s study is to find ______.

A.what will happen if twins spend lives entirely in the same company.

B.why the 16 pairs of twins have been adopted by different families.

C.whether separated growing up has effect on twins’ special similarities.

D.when the special similarities come into being during their growing up.

3What does the word “reading” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?

A.Book. B.Explanation.

C.Literature. D.Measurement.

4According to Tom Bouchard’s research, the special similarities between twins ______.

A.depend on what the twins enjoy and suffer from.

B.can not be proved or accepted by all the experts.

C.result from the twins’ growing up and development.

D.are not closely linked with where the twins are raised.

28、The early life of the green sea turtle (海龟) is full of danger. Only one in 1,000 baby sea turtles survive to adulthood (成年). From its home in the sand, it breaks its egg with an egg tooth. Its mother is not there to help it. Instead, it is greeted by crabs, coyotes, and dogs waiting to eat it for dinner. To survive, the baby turtle must hide in the sand until night. Then, it moves slowly to the sea.

The small turtle must swim hard to reach the ocean waters. In the sea, it tries hard to find food. It must also keep itself from being food for fish.

As dangerous as the sea turtle’s life is in the natural world, its most dangerous enemies are humans. The rubbish left by humans in the ocean causes problems for the small green sea turtle. A little turtle might eat a piece of plastic (塑料) in the sea. It might also eat oil on the ocean’s surface. Young turtles also get caught in fishing nets. There are laws against hunting sea turtles. Still, many are hunted, both for their meat and for their shells (壳). All of these dangers must be prevented.

Sea turtles that do survive to grow into adulthood go through many changes. For example, adult green sea turtles weigh about 500 pounds. They stop eating jellyfish and other meat and eat only plants. And they may plan a trip to go back home again. A mother sea turtle goes back to the beach where she was born. This is the only place where she will lay eggs. Even if it has been forty years since she was a baby, she always knows her way back home.

【1】Why do baby turtles move to the sea at night?

A.They dislike sunshine.

B.They prefer lower temperatures.

C.They can find food easily then.

D.They need to avoid enemies.

【2】What does the author think of the young turtles in Paragraph 3?

A.Pitiful.

B.Careless.

C.Interesting.

D.Courageous.

【3】What can we learn about sea turtles?

A.They mainly feed on fish and meat.

B.They always produce eggs at their birthplaces.

C.They can live for around forty years.

D.They visit their beach homes several times a year.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.The homes of green sea turtles.

B.How sea turtles find their food.

C.The dangers faced by sea turtles.

D.How young turtles become adults.

29、In a study published in Nature Machine Intelligence, researchers at Ohio State University show how artificial intelligence(AI)can follow clinical trials to identify drugs for repurposing, a solution that can help advance innovative treatments.

Repurposing drugs is legal and not unusual. When doctors prescribe(开处方)drugs that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA)for purposes different from what is printed on the labels, the drugs are being used “off-label” Just because a drug is FDA-approved for a specific type of disease does not prevent it from having possible benefits for other purposes.

For example, Metformin, a drug that is FDA-approved for treating type 2 diabetes, is also used to treat PCOS(a disease of women), and other diseases. Trazodone, an anti-depressant with FDA-approval to treat depression, is also prescribed by doctors to help treat patients with sleep issues.

The Ohio State University research team created an AI deep learning model for predicting treatment probability with patient data including the treatment, outcomes, and potential confounders(干扰因素).

Confounders are related to the exposure and outcome. For example, a connection is identified between music festivals and increases in skin rashes(红疹). Music festivals do not directly cause skin rashes. In this case, one possible confounding factor between the two may be outdoor heat, as music festivals tend to run outdoors when the temperature is high, and heat is a known cause for rashes. When working with real-world data, confounders could number in the thousands. AI deep learning is well-suited to find patterns in the complexity of potentially thousands of confounders.

The researcher team used confounders including population data and co-prescribed drugs. With this proof-of-concept, now clinicians have a powerful AI tool to rapidly discover new treatments by repurposing existing medications.

【1】What do we know about a drug used off-label?

A.It is sold without a label.

B.It is available at a low price.

C.Its uses extend beyond the original ones.

D.Its clinical trials are rejected by doctors.

【2】Metformin and Trazodone are similar as both of them________.

A.are used off-label

B.treat rare diseases

C.result in sleep issues

D.are medical breakthroughs

【3】What can be inferred about “confounders”?

A.They are possible treatments.

B.They are environmental factors.

C.They can be easily recognized in real-world data.

D.They should be taken into serious consideration.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.AI examines benefits of existing drugs.

B.AI identifies off-label uses for drugs.

C.AI finds new drugs for common diseases.

D.AI proves the power of drug research.
