24、 Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) once made history by taking bites of red romaine lettuce (长叶药昔). They became the first humans to eat food that was grown entirely in space.
The lettuce was planted on the ISS in a small greenhouse called “Veggie”, which uses LED lights to help plants grow in space.
First, the astronauts cleaned the lettuce with special sanitizing wipes(消毒纸巾) and then ate it with some salad dressing.
“It was one small bite for man, one giant leap (飞跃)for ...our journey to Mars.”one astronaut, Scott Kelly, later posted on social media.
Space vegetables are a part of the NASA experiment called “Veg-01”, a study on how plants grow without the effects of Earth’s gravity(重力). It will allow astronauts to grow and eat their own food during long space explorations.
“If we’re ever going to go to Mars someday, we're going to need a spacecraft that is much more self-sustainable in its food supply(供应)”, said Kelly.
Growing fresh plants on a spacecraft may also provide oxygen and help keep astronauts alive, NASA said.
Veg-o1 started in May 2014.The first batch(一批)of vegetables took 33 days to grow in space before they were taken back to Earth for a safety check. After making sure they were safe to eat, astronauts planted a second batch on July 8. They let the plant grow for another 33 days and were then able to eat it.
Astronauts usually only get vegetables when a supply ship comes to the ISS. Now with vegetables grown in space, they can eat them whenever they want.

A.Because it provides people with healthier food.
B.Because it can help astronauts with their journey to Mars.

25、 You may charge(充电) your phone every day, but do you clean your phone as much? Whatever your hands touch, your phones touch. It has been discovered that some phones have 18 times more bacteria and viruses (细菌病毒) than any surface in a public restroom. So it won’t surprise you that a 2011 University of London study found that one in six of our phones have bacteria and viruses on them.
The research on bacteria and viruses led to the invention of PhoneSoap. It is not actually liquid (液体). It is a phone charger that uses the electromagnetic radiation (辐射) to kill 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses, cleaning your phone while it charges.
“Certain types of bacteria and viruses are really on our phones,” says Wes Barnes, the PhoneSoap founder. “It would be the fastest, most powerful way to kill them .”
PhoneSoap looks like a little metal suitcase. Your phone rests in to charge and get cleaned at the same time. Instead of plugging your phone into the wall, you’d plug it into the PhoneSoap charger box. The process only takes a few minutes but, Barnes says, “The idea is that you can leave it in there overnight if you want to keep charging. and it cleans the phone fully.”
The founder found the right companies and then started shipping the product in late November. By last week’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, PhoneSoap was very popular with people. The founder has left his present job and is selling PhoneSoap without a stop. “We sell out PhoneSoap every day, and we will try to provide enough PhoneSoap” Barnes says. “It’s been a great challenge.”
【1】We can learn from the first paragraph that ___________.
A.phones can be very dirty B.phones are where bacteria are born
C.most phones are attacked by bacteria D.phones store more bacteria in a restroom
【2】According to the passage, PhoneSoap ___________.
A.takes a whole night to kill bacteria B.deals with bacteria with radiation
C.is a kind of liquid D.has to be plugged into the wall to work
【3】From the last paragraph, we can infer that ___________.
A.PhoneSoap is in great need now B.PhoneSoap is really hard to use
C.they won’t produce enough PhoneSoap D.they’ll make improvements to PhoneSoap
【4】What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Methods of cleaning phones. B.Tips on charging phones quickly.
C.Soap killing harmful bacteria on phones. D.A phone charger keeping your phone clean.
26、5-second rule:what’s the truth?
Almost everyone has dropped some food on the floor and still wanted to eat it. If someone saw you drop it, he or she might have shouted, “5-second rule!”This so-called rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up in five seconds or less. But is that true?
Professor Anthony Hilton from Ashton University, UK, tested the rule with his students. They found that food dropped for five seconds is less likely to contain bacteria(细菌) than if it sits there for longer.
For the study, Hilton and his students tested a lot of food—bread, pasta, cookies and candy—to see how much bacteria they had when they made contact with the floor. They allowed the food to lie on various types of flooring-carpet, laminate(复合地板), and tile (瓷砖) for three seconds to 30 seconds.
Not surprisingly, the longer the food was on the floor, the more bacteria it had. And the type of floor where the dropped food landed had an effect. Bacteria are least likely to transfer from carpet, while they’re most likely to transfer from laminate or tiled surfaces after more than five seconds.
The study also found that the wetter the food, the more likely it was to pick up bacteria. Although most people are happy to follow the 5-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still carried an infection(感染) risk. “It very much depends on which bacteria are on the floor at the time,” Hilton told Forbes.
【1】What is the “5-second rule” about?
A. People often shout at someone when they drop food on the floor.
B. Food is safe when you pick up off the floor in less than five seconds.
C. It’s better to eat dropped food when it’s been on the floor for over five seconds.
D. Food will go bad when dropped on the floor in five second or less.
【2】Hilton’s test wanted to find out ________.
A. if the “5-second rule” is true B. the students’ favourite food
C. which food is easily dropped D. if different types of floor have different bacteria
【3】According to the test, we learn the following EXCEPT ________.
A. the dropped food had more bacteria if it sat on the floor for longer
B. the dropped food on carpet had the least bacteria
C. bacteria was impossible to transfer from laminate or tied surfaces
D. the wetter food was more likely to pick up bacteria
【4】According to the article, the infection risk of the dropped food does NOT depend on _______.
A. how long the food sits on the floor B. what the dropped food was
C. what the bacteria are D. what the weather is like that day

China, with Four Great Inventions, in ancient times, has once again showed its ability to change the world with its “new four great inventions”: high-speed railways, electronic payments, shared bicycles and online shopping.
The four innovative ways of life are most popular among young people, according to a survey by the Belt and Road-Research Institute(一带一路研究院) of Beijing Foreign Studies University.
“The ‘new four great inventions’ are all related to China’s high-tech (高科技), which made the lives of people easier in China,” said Wu Hao, the director of Beijing Foreign Studies University.
“My wallet is no longer in use. I can buy and eat whatever I want simply with my phone,” said Lin Jinlong, a foreign student from Cambodia, adding that “Even pancake sellers are using Alipay (mobile payment). We can also order food at home, which is super convenient. If I were at home in Cambodia, I would have to go outdoors.”
As a big fan of bicycles, he also showed his love for China’s shared bicycles, saying that “shared bikes are bringing cycling (骑单车) back to people’s lives---and they are making public transport(公共交通) more convenient and less crowded, and encouraging people to be more active.”
Rebacca Fannin, the founder of Silicon Dragon(硅谷之龙), noted that China is beginning to lead in innovation in some ways.
