22、People often think that plants fight with each other for sunshine, water and soil. Now a new study tells us that this is not true.

A group of scientists studied plants in the south of Spain for over three months this summer. The plants grew in very poor soil with little nutrients(营养) or water. The scientists found that the plants helped each other with these problems.

Bigger plants would protect smaller ones from the sun. They would keep the soil wet. When the leaves fell upon the ground, they could give nutrients to the smaller plants. This helped them grow.

At the same time, the bigger plants grew more flowers than those that grew alone. The scientists said if big and small plants grew together, more animals like insects and birds would come to them. This meant they could attract more pollinators(传花粉者). Both sides won!
