Both of them ran to the trees as fast as they could. They reached the tree nearly at the same time. However, one of them took one step ahead and climbed up the tree. Then he hid in the branches (树枝) and watched his friend under the tree. The other man found that there was no time to climb, so he fell to the ground.
The bear came over, took a look at the tall tree and then at the man on the ground. The man held his breath and pretended (假装) to be dead. The bear came up to him and sniffed at him with its nose. The bear soon left him for it is said that bears will not touch a dead body.

22、The coldest village in the world
If you think the place where you live is the coldest, then a visit to Oymyakon may just change your mind.
Oymyakon is a small village in Siberia where the temperature can be as low as -67.78℃. It’s the coldest inhabited (有居民的) place on the Earth. The average (平均的) winter temperature is around -50℃ and only about 500 people live there.
Photographer Amos Chapple, from New Zealand, took a two-day trip to Oymyakon and quickly learned just how terrible the sudden dropping of temperatures could be. “I was wearing thin trousers when I first went there. It was about -47℃. I remember feeling like the strongly gripping (紧抓) my legs,” said Amos Chapple.
He said that the local people lived on meat and fish because the crops were unable to survive in the free temperatures. Because the ground is always frozen, there is little indoor plumbing (管道装置). Cell phones and car engines are often in danger of freezing over. If cars aren’t left running outside, they must be kept in a warm garage.
Often it is dark and lonely outdoors, with only three hours of light in winter. However, in summer the village will have 21 hours of light and temperatures can rise to an average of 22.87℃ in July.
