1、 Dear sir or madam,
I’d like to thank you for the work that you and your organization(组合)are doing to help stop world hunger. 1. I think it’s very important for people to join it. Everyone should play a part in saving food.
I’m Li Hua from China and now I am an eight-grade student in NO. 8 Middle School in Beijing. My family and I used to live in Africa for one year. The people there were so poor, 2. they were not only having no food to eat, but also having little water to drink. I felt very sad to experience that, and then I thought about how wasteful(浪费)many Chinese were.
As a child, I am so lucky. 3. 我不必担心食物。I always have enough delicious food, live in a big house and have beautiful clothes to dress. Many people around us are wasting things everywhere and every day. 4. People waste food because of poor taste. They also throw away clothes due to their old fashion. I can’t solve such a hard problem just by myself. But I really want to do something. 5. 我希望你能给我一些建议。I"ll try my best to help those poor people.
Thank you for your time.
Yours,
Li Hua

21、 US teenagers Hannah Lucas, 15, and her brother Charlie, 13, have created an app called notOK. It came out in the US and Canada on Jan 31. People just need to pay $1.99 (12.5 yuan) each month to use it.
Imagine having an app that works like this: When you need help, just open the app, touch the “notOK” button and a text message will be sent to up to five pre-selected (预先选定的) people, along with a link to the user’s GPS location(位置). The message reads: “Hey, I’m not OK. Please call me, text me, or come find me”.
Hannah was inspired (启发) to create the app during a dark time in her life last year. She suffered from a disease that caused her to pass out(晕倒)at school. Other kids sometimes bullied (欺负)her about this. She felt sad and wanted to find an app that would allow her to get help when she wasn’t feeling OK.
She asked her brother Charlie, whose nickname is “Tech Support”, to find such an app. When they couldn’t find one, they decided to create one themselves.
They came up with some designs for the app first. Charlie took a programming class last summer and built a website for the app. Hannah also shared her idea in her summer business class. Some app developers showed interest and decided to help her.
Hannah is happy that her app is helping others. “It makes everything I went through(经历)last year worth it,” she said.
【1】Which of the following is NOT true about the app notOK?
A.Hannah Lucas and her brother developed this app.
B.Users can use the app to call for help.
C.It can only send a message to a certain person.
D.Users can send their location to others through this app.
【2】Why does Hannah Lucas pass out sometimes?
A.She has a disease that causes this to happen. B.She is often bullied at school.
C.She doesn’t get enough sleep. D.She gets too nervous about exams.
【3】What did Hannah and her brother create this app for?
A.To make money to support their families.
B.To help people find new friends online.
C.To call on people to focus on(关注)school bullying.
D.To help people when they are not feeling well.
【4】What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.Hannah got her idea in her summer business class.
B.Hannah is happy that others find this app helpful.
C.Charlie and Hannah sold this app to an app developer.
D.Charlie had been learning programming for many years.
22、One dark night, two blind(盲的) men were going home from work. “I need to buy some socks,” said one of them suddenly. “Let’s stop at the shop on the street.” “OK,” said the other. “I think I’ll buy two or three pairs for myself, too.” They went to the shop.
“What size do you wear, sir? And what colour would you like?” asked the girl in the shop.
“Size Eleven. Give me one pair of black socks and two pairs of white, please,” answered one of them. “And you, sir?” the girl asked the other man. “The same for me. I wear Size Eleven, too. So, the same colour and the same number,” said the other man.
A moment later they were in the dark street. Each man took the socks he had bought. But just then, a boy riding a bicycle bumped(撞) into them. The blind men dropped(掉) all the socks on the ground! All the six pairs of socks mixed up. The boy quickly said sorry and left. The two blind men picked up all the socks, but they could not tell black from white. How could they be sure that they each got one pair of black socks and two pairs of white socks? They tried to ask for help, but there was no one else in the street. What could they do?
Soon one of them had an idea. Can you guess what it was? They separated(分开) each pair of socks and both took one sock from each pair. When they got home, each of them had two black socks and four white ones of the same size –just what they wanted. Weren’t they clever?

【2】What did each of the blind men want to buy ?
【3】Who bumped into them after they came out of the shop ?
【4】Someone helped them. Do you think so?

23、In January, more and more people in London, UK, became infected (感染的) with the new coronavirus. With a “No Lockdown (不封城)” movement, I was worried about how this was going to end.
After receiving the Sinovac vaccine (疫苗), I felt all good in my first few months back in the UK since I arrived last September. In my lessons, wearing a mask was not a must, but I always wore one. During the 2021 summer term, many students at my school tested positive (阳性) for the virus, but I didn’t.
During the Christmas holiday, it’s traditional to go shopping. As I was staying in Birmingham with my host family, I went to the city center with them to experience a different vibe (氛围). That’s probably how I got infected with the virus.
School re-opened on Jan 4. I was surprised to test positive. I had to stay isolated (隔离的) in a special room of our boarding (住宿) house. I had some symptoms (症状). I had a fever of 38.9℃. I also had a runny nose and a sore throat. Luckily, the Chinese medicine I brought with me helped.
As I write this story, I still have the virus, but my symptoms (症状) nearly went away. I only have a headache. From my point of view, the British people did not take the virus seriously. Everything was being settled (解决) with calls to “live with COVID”.
