21、Now some women are spending a weekend at Mother’s Camp. There, husbands and children are not allowed. Why would a woman want to take a vacation without her family? Some women say they need time to be alone.
At Mother’s Camp a woman has space to herself. She can sleep, read or watch TV, and no one will bother(打扰) her. No children will ask, “Mom, what’s for dinner?” No husband(丈夫) will say, “Oh, dear, I can’t find any clean socks.” In fact, almost 50% of women in the United States work outside the home. Many of them work full-time and then come home to a second job---taking care of their homes and families. These working women say one of their biggest problems is housework.
In the United States, working wives(妻子) do about 75% of the housework. Many of their husbands say they want to help. But then they burn the rice or they can’t find the pans(平底锅). They ask so many questions that their wives think it is easier to do the job themselves.
Some women go to Mother’s Camp just to get a break from housework. For two days they don’t cook, they don’t clean, they don’t look after their children and husbands. What do they do? 22、 There are many words to describe the red panda. This animal is cute, fuzzy, reddish, and small. Sadly, the word endangered also describes the red panda. That’s because people are destroying its habitat. If people continue to do this, there will be no more red pandas left in the world.
People cut down the trees that red pandas live in. Red pandas live in the forests of the Himalayas, a mountain range that goes through Nepal, China, and India. About half of the red pandas in the world live there. When people cut down the trees, they destroy the red panda’s habitat. Red pandas spend most of their lives in trees, so they are basically homeless when their forests get cut down. Without their homes, the pandas are not safe from animals that can hurt them.
There is another reason that deforestation, or cutting down trees hurts red pandas. It takes away the animals’ food sources. Red pandas eat bamboo, a grass that grows in their habitat. They also eat fruit, roots, acorns, and eggs. When deforestation happens, the entire habitat is ruined and the red pandas don’t know where to find food. People have also endangered red pandas by taking them out of their habitat to use their fur for clothing and to sell them as pets.
With all of these problems, it’s no wonder that there are fewer red pandas in the world. So how can people help them? Some zoo keepers are helping to solve this problem by bringing red pandas to zoos and clinics. The zookeepers take care of the red pandas and hope that baby red pandas will be born. Then the zookeepers send the babies back into the wild.
There is also a group called the Red Panda Network. It is a group of people who guard the forests in Nepal and the red pandas that live in them. They watch the forests every day. They hope that in the future, people will stop destroying the red panda’s habitat and that the animal will no longer be endangered.

23、 “If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!”
That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.
All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it. The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a hard floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show.
If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!
