A big sandstorm hit northern China on March 15, 2021. It covered many cities with thick clouds of yellow dust (尘土).
The storm, which came from Mongolia (蒙古国), was the largest sandstorm to hit China in the past 10 years. Many flights and classes were canceled because the visibility (能见度) was lower than 500 meters.
The storm was the result of warm and dry weather in the area, together with the strong winds from Mongolia. “There has been little rainfall so far this spring and the temperature is rising. So now is a worrying time for sandstorms,” said an expert from Beijing.
In recent years, sandstorms haven’t been as common in northern China as before. The land with desertification (荒漠化) has been falling by 7,585 km2 per year in China, and the area of sandy land has been decreasing by 1,284 km2 a year. This is thanks to China’s Three-North Shelter Forest Program (TNSFP, 三北防护林工程) which started in the 1970s. Millions of trees have been planted in northern China to prevent sandstorms and protect the environment.
Besides, China has a color-graded warming system for sandstorms (as shown in the picture), with red meaning the most serious, followed by orange, yellow, blue and green. Therefore, people would have time to get prepared for the sandstorm.

22、 Once upon a time there was a bird and a snake. They built their homes in the same tree.
Whenever the bird laid eggs, the snake would eat them. The bird was very unhappy. “That bad snake. I must do something. Let me go and talk to him,” thought the bird.
The next morning, the bird went to the snake and said politely, “Please don’t eat my eggs. Let’s live like good neighbors.”
“Huh! You cannot expect me to go hungry. Eggs are what I eat,” replied the snake.

The very next day, the bird was flying over the king’s palace. She saw the princess (公主) wearing an expensive necklace. Suddenly she had an idea. She took the necklace in her mouth and flew home.

Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making our dreams come true is life’s biggest challenge. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects or it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from achieving your dream. In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is made up of many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the road to your dream. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important.
Without dreams, you won’t make up your mind to learn more skills and new interests.
