We go to school every day to become a better person. How can we start to make changes in our lives? Perhaps we can get tips from former US First Lady Michelle Obama. During a 1to China, Obama shared her views on education and youth with students.

The first lady encouraged Chinese students to2high and get a good education. At Chengdu No 7 High School, she told students that coming from poor families doesn’t matter as long as you have perseverance ( 毅力 ). Obama said her family was not rich. Like many Chinese students, her parents had big dreams for her. She worked hard to make them 3. Sometimes she had to wake up at 4: 30 am and study late into the night. “But whenever I got tired or discouraged…, I would remember something my mother always told me. She said, ‘A good education is something that no one can take away from you.’”

Mrs Obama also encourages Chinese students to study4broaden their horizons (开阔视野) in a speech at Peking University. “As the Chinese saying goes: It is5to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books,” she said. It’s not enough to get good grades in school. It’s also important to have real experience with languages, cultures and societies that are different from your own.

Studying overseas can also benefit future international relations. It can help young people from different countries work together to deal with shared problems like climate change, Obama said.

21、   Most children don’t enjoy doing chores. They like playing computer games rather than cleaning the rooms. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs. Black, has good and proper methods to get their children to do housework.

Here is an example.

“Mom, have you worked out next week’s chores? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun! ”

When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like these, “sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help mom cook, wash vegetables, make beds, feed the fish, cut the wood, clean the bathroom” and many others, Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card “clean the bathroom”. Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up “wash vegetables” and Robert chose “feed the fish”. Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.

22、【语篇来自二十一世纪学生英文报·试题原创】

Research has shown that when we volunteer—where we give ourselves and our time to help others—we actually end up benefiting too. Our happiness grows. We feel more satisfied with life. We even have more energy and creativity. Basically, we have more to give.

I’ve noticed a pattern with my friends. Sometimes, they get into the habit of gossiping about others. They will constantly complain about their bosses or coworkers. It seems as if they get caught in this loop of complaining, and their frustration distracts them in other parts of their life. When this happens, they become uninterested in new events or become annoyed by their colleagues or things that happen at work.

At the same time, I’ve also seen other friends go out of their way to help someone on their team or to help out on a project that had very little—or even nothing—to do with their main work. Although it seems like they won’t receive anything in return, my friends benefit from these interactions. My friends have told me about the stronger relationships they’ve built at work and the fun they’ve had working on new and interesting projects. They’ve told me about how the people they helped before have returned the favor later on. Not only that, but they have even talked about times where their boss recognized them for their work or when they were informed in advance about upcoming projects.

We often think that when we help someone else, we aren’t doing anything for ourselves. But we actually often end up getting back just as much as we give. When we step in to help someone, we often turn out to be helping ourselves, as well.

【1】Can we benefit from helping others?

A.Yes, we can.

B.No, we can’t.

C.Yes, we can only be happy.

D.We don’t know.

【2】Complaining about others may make people________.

A.be interested in new events

B.be uninterested in new events

C.be happy with their colleagues

D.gossip about others

【3】The author’s friends have built strong relationships through________.

A.gossiping

B.working

C.helping others

D.complaining

【4】What we get back is _________what we give when we help others.

A.more than

B.less than

C.as much as

D.no more than

【5】What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.Helping others is not interesting.

B.Helping others is helping yourself.

C.Helping others has little benefits.

D.Don’t help others.
