六、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Listening test is one of the most important parts of the English exam. Here are some tips for you.

Before you start to listen, you need to relax. Don't be stressed out. And try to read the questions. These questions usually help you understand the conversation or the passage.

Then listen carefully to the first sentence. It usually tells you the main idea of the passage. When you're listening, try to do some thinking and take some notes, such as:

What happened

When, where, and how

What does the speaker want to tell us

In this way, you may understand the passage better.

Please remember not to think about one or two words for a long time. When you hear some words you don't know, don't spend too much time on them. Very often, you'll find out what they mean later when you go on with the listening.

1When you're listening, it's important for you to ________

A. take some notes B. remember every word

C. understand all the words D. think about one or two words for a long time

2The________usually help(s) us understand the passage better.

A. questions B. first sentence C. notes D. A, B and C

22、Billions of locusts (蝗虫) are moving through farms and fields in the East African countries of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.

Locusts are grasshoppers (蚱蜢). Normally grasshoppers don't travel in groups so they do little harm. But when there are lots of them, their bodies and behavior change. That’s when they become locusts. Locusts travel in huge groups,

laying eggs along the way, which produces even more locusts. In a single day, a small swarm (群) of the insects can eat as much food as 35 ,000 people do.

The locust swarms in Ethiopia and Somalia are the worst in 25 years. These locusts are desert locusts. They began swarming about six months ago. By moving with the winds, desert locusts can travel up to 90 miles a day or more.

Locust swarms are more common when heavy rains follow a long dry period. The insects lay their eggs in the wet ground. This season, East Africa has had its heaviest rainy season in 40 years.

When the insects swarm (成群地飞来飞去), one square kilometer of land can hold as many as 150 million locusts. There are 700 square kilometers of land covered by the insects in Kenya alone.

The insects are a threat to lives in the regions, where food is already in short supply. Already many farmers who keep animals are struggling because locusts have eaten up the plants the animals usually live on

In East Africa, farmers have been shooting into the air or making noises in the fields, but that doesn’t work against so many insects. Experts say that spraying pesticides (杀虫剂) over large areas from airplanes is the only way to reduce the number of the insects. The UN has released (释放) $ 10 million to help deal with the locust problem. The UN says about $70 million is needed to truly control the locusts with pesticides.

23、   Last year, I worked in a middle school near my mother's house, and I stayed with her for a month. During that time, I helped her do some housework and buy some food.

After the first week, I noticed that the food was eaten up very quickly. Then I began keeping an eye on my mum. To my surprise, I found that she would put some of the food into a paper bag and go out with it at about nine every morning. And finally, I decided to follow her. I saw her taking the food to the street children. She would also spend a lot of time talking and playing with them.

One day, I talked to a neighbour and found out that my mum was well-known in the area. The street children were very friendly with her and even thought of her as their own mother. Then it hit me—why wouldn't she want to tell me about it? Was she worried that I would stop buying food if I found out?

When my mum got home, I gave her a big hug(拥抱). I told her she didn't need to keep it a secret from me. And she told me something about the children. Some of them lived with an old lady in a small house. Others slept on the street. For years, she was helping the poor street children by giving them food. After she told me everything, I was so moved by how selfless(无私的) she was. She helped others in need. As her son, I was so proud of my mum.

I continued to buy food for my mum after that. But I always added one more bag for her other children.

C.become well-known in the area D.help the poor street children

24、In your life, there are a lot of people around you. They are your relatives, neighbors, friends or classmates. Sometimes you get along well with them, but sometimes you don’t. What can you do when someone hurts you? Most people may be angry or even fight with him/her. But it’s not a good idea. You’d better forget all this and forgive(原谅) him/her.

Maybe it’s not easy for you to do that, but it’s possible. Please remember: Keep a good mood, and you will keep healthy. Staying angry with others, in fact, means letting others’ mistakes treat yourself unfairly.

How can you forgive others?

First, think of something pleasant and try to get yourself happy.

Second, don’t wait others to say sorry to you. If anyone hurts you, he perhaps won’t say sorry to you. He may just want to hurt you or just not see things the same way as you do.

Third, try to see things in others’ shoes. You can understand their minds better and make yourself a little happier.

At last, try to know yourself very well. Whose mistakes caused that, yours or others? If it’s your fault, try to say sorry to them. If it isn’t, smile at the thing.

【1】Forgiving others is _________ according to the writer’s opinion.

B.foolish

C.possible
