六、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   For many animals, the sea is a dangerous place. Overfishing and pollution are killing many sea animals. But the number of cephalopods (头足类动物) – sea animals that include octopi (章鱼) and squid (鱿鱼) – has been growing for the past 60 years.

Zoe Doubleday is a scientist and she did a study of cephalopods. She says cephalopods’ special abilities made their numbers to grow.

These animals can change their colour and body shape. They grow fast and live for only one or two years. “This allows them to get used to changing environments more quickly than other sea animals,” Doubleday said.

What’s more, rising sea temperatures might make animals age faster, she says. They might be growing faster and giving birth to more babies.

So people can find them in both cold and hot places. Because they can easily get used to their environment, they are known as the “wild grass of the sea”.

Will octopi and squid take over the world one day? According to Doubleday, that won’t happen. The growth of cephalopods could slow down if the animals run out of food and start eating each other. Overfishing could also change their numbers.

For now, the cephalopod growth is good news for other sea animals. “The growing number of cephalopods could be good for sea animals and birds that eat cephalopods,” Doubleday said.

1According to the first paragraph, what is happening to sea animals?

A.They are getting used to dirty water.

B.They are running out of food.

C.They are being killed by overfishing and pollution.

D.They are being caught and kept in zoos.

2What helped the number of cephalopods to grow?

A.Their ability to change their colour and body shape.

B.Their ability to grow more slowly than other animals.

C.Their ability to change their body temperature.

D.Their ability to eat other sea animals.

3“Cephalopods live in all of the world’s seas.” The sentence can be put in ________.

A. B. C. D.

4According to the article, the cephalopod growth now ________ .

A.makes the sea full of wild grass B.makes the sea full of cephalopods

C.harms some sea animals D.is good for some sea animals

22、

If you have ever had a cat, or have watched one of the many funny cat videos online, you'll know that cats have a mind of their own. A lot of the things they do are hard to understand—they like to climb up tall furniture, fit themselves in small spaces and attack(攻击) small objects for no reason at all.

Now scientists have managed to work out what exactly is going on in the brains of our little friends. According to Tony Buffington, a professor at Ohio State University in the US, cats' strange behavior(行为)largely comes from their way of life back in the wild. "Cats today still have many of the same natural abilities that allowed them to live in the wild for millions of years." he said in a TED Talk. "To them, our homes are their jungles(丛林)."

Cats' bodies and great balancing(平衡)abilities allow them to climb to high places to better look at the environment. Even though they don't have to hunt(猎食)any more in human houses, they still keep the old habit of observing the living room from, for example, the top of the fridge.

Cats' hunting abilities also make them attack small things like keys and USB drives.

In the wild, they hunt whatever they can get for food, and most of the animals they kill are small. However, a cat can also be prey. This explains why they like to stay in small spaces like drawers or washing machines—they are hiding, or they think they are hiding, from more dangerous animals. This is also why cats prefer a clean box: a dirty one with an unpleasant smell could easily show enemies where they are.

Knowing how cats' minds work is not only useful for better understanding them, it may also help cats' owners to better meet cats' needs. For example, owners could try to make climbing easier for cats by moving their furniture around. They could also use "food puzzles" to make eating feel more like hunting instead of just giving food to the cats.

1According to the passage, Tony Buffington agrees that ________.

A.cats' strange behavior is hard for people to understand

B.cats are more used to living in the wild than in humans' homes

C.cats' natural abilities are still helpful to make them get food today

D.cats act strangely mainly because of their natural abilities in the wild

2The word "prey" in Paragraph 4 probably means"________".

A.an animal that lives in the jungles

B.an animal that likes keeping itself clean

C.an animal that likes playing hiding games with people

D.an animal that becomes others' food after being hunted

3According to the writer, cats' owners can better meet cats' needs by ________.

A.creating hunting games at home B.giving them delicious food

C.making them go back to the wild D.putting them in the furniture

4What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To describe cats' past wild experience to readers.

B.To tell cat owners how to make life easier for cats.

C.To explain the reasons behind cats' strange behavior.

D.To compare cats' behavior in human homes with that in the wild.

23、Up to now, Wood has published more than 60 diaries, and he still updates the diaries frequently on social media websites. In his first diary, he mentioned, “News is going around about a bad cold virus in Wuhan, but I feel worlds away from me and few people wear masks in public.”

He recorded in his diaries that thousands of medical workers from different provinces and cities went to Hubei to help with the anti-epidemic (抗疫). Restaurants and shops were closed down, while supermarkets checked people’s body temperatures. And community workers across the country took strict action, asking people to stay at home and helping the old buy daily necessities.

“People in some countries said these measures could cause panic among the public. However, my experience in China shows these efforts are useful and effective, which finally removed people’s fear,” Wood said.

Wood’s diaries soon attracted the world’s attention. Over 10,000 people left him messages online, and he was interviewed by Canadian CTV which later showed his diaries on its website.

“I also received greetings from my family and friends in Canada. They said they were inspired by the efforts the Chinese have made,” he said. “People from some countries thought the Chinese overreacted, and that the Chinese government had overdone in epidemic prevention and control. However, since more countries and regions have been infected (感染) by the virus, more and more people came to realize how proper and important China’s control and prevention measures are.”

Wood is working with the New World Press, which plans to make his diaries a book named The Invisible War. In this book, he hopes to share China’s anti-epidemic experience with more people across the world so they can build confidence to fight against the virus.
