二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Seasonal pumped hydropower storageSPHS),an already established yet infrequently used technology ,could be an affordable and sustainable solution(解决方法)to store energy and water annually, according to new IIASA research published in the journal Nature Communications. Compared with other mature storage solutions, such as natural gas, the study shows that there is considerable potential for SPHS to provide highly competitive energy storage costs.

Seasonal pumped hydropower storage means pumping water into a deep storage reservoir(水库), built parallel to a major river, during times of high water flow or low energy demand. When water is not enough or energy demand increasesstored water is then released from the reservoir to generate electricity.

The new study is the first to provide a global, high-resolution analysis of the potential and costs for SPHS technology. In their analysis, researchers assessed the theoretical global potential for storing energy and water seasonally with SPHS, focusing on the locations with the highest potential and lowest cost. They found that the technology would be particularly effective in the Himalayas, the Andes, Alpsand the Rocky Mountains, as well as mountainous regions in the Middle East, Brazil, Asia, and Russia, and many other locations around the world.

The study also addresses some of the potential environmental concerns related to hydropower. Because SPHS reservoirs are deep and constructed parallel to, rather than within the course of a river, the environmental and land use impacts can also be up to 10 to 50 times smaller than conventional hydropower plants.

Hunt, lead author of the study, says, “With the need for a change to a more sustainable world with lower CO2 emissions(排放),renewable energies and energy storage will play a major role in the near future. Given the vast untapped(未开发的)and cheap potential of SPHS, it will soon play an important role in storing energy and water on a yearly basis.”

1What is the strength of SPHS based on the new IIASA research?

A.It’s costly. B.It’s out-dated.

C.It’s rarely used. D.It’s inexpensive.

2What do researchers concentrate on when assessing the use of SPHS?

A.Environmental protection. B.High profits.

C.Suitable places. D.Water flow.

3What do we know about the SPHS reservoirs in Paragraph 4?

A.They damage the river.

B.They are environmentally friendly.

C.They are similar to traditional hydropower plants.

D.They can be effective in many places globally.

4What’s the future for SPHS according to Hunt?

A.Promising. B.Panicking.

C.Discouraging. D.Demanding.

22、Some people were killed when a huge explosion hit an industrial area of China, injuring hundreds of people. The explosion is believed to have come from a shipment of explosive inside a warehouse at about 11:30 pm local time (5:30pm in Britain) in the north-eastern city of Tianjin.

Videos of the accident showed fires lighting up the night sky, raising dust dozens of feet into the air, and people nearby said the explosion had broken windows. Tianjin resident Zhang Siyu, who lives several miles away from the accident site, said, “I thought it was an earthquake, so I rushed downstairs without my shoes on. Only once I was outside did I realize it was an explosion. There was the huge fireball in the sky with thick clouds. Everybody could see it.”

Post on Chinese social network Weibo showed a fireball shooting into the air and as least two separate explosions, while photos showed people in the street apparently covered in blood. Others image showed children being carried in blankets to safety.

It was reported that the two explosions happened within 30 seconds of each other and about 100 fire trucks were sent to the scene, with most of the injuries caused by broken glass and stones. The firm running the warehouse was named by local media as Ruihai Logistics. The company says on its website that it was set up in 2011. It says it handles one million tons of cargos(货物) per year.

The National Earthquake Bureau reported two major explosion before midnight local time---the first with an amount of 3 tons of TNT(三硝基甲苯), and the second with an amount of 21 tons. Six thousand firefighters brought the terrible fire under control, although it was still buring . It was reported that the firefighters were combing (梳理)the neighborhood for the possible injured.

A. He recorded videos of the big accident.

B. He posted what he saw online as soon as possible.

C. He called the firefighters when he went out.

D. He ran downstairs as soon as possible.

【3】How might most people know the accident first?

A. In the newspaper.   B. By the radio.

C. From the Internet. D. In the textbook.

23、Those who work on the “996” model (where employees work from 9am to 9pm, 6 days a week) must envy their counterparts (对应的人)in an American company, because they have a shorter work week. Basecamp, a Chicago-based web application company gives all his employees a short work week: just four days—a total of 32 hours, between May and September every year. Also, they usually work five days a week for the rest of the year.

“That’s plenty of time to get great work done. This is all we expect and all we want from people,” says Jason Fried, a co-founder. “Working 60-plus, or 70-plus hours is unnecessary. In fact, if you have to work 60-plus or 70-plus hours a week, there’s a management problem.”

The company’s summer workload must fit reduced hours, Mr. Fried insists, otherwise the benefits of a shorter week - to recover from work, enjoy time with family and develop outside interests - would be undone.

His new research finds that it is not just long hours that are harmful to employees’ physical and mental health. It is also the intensity (强度)of work. Moreover, it suggests that intensity work harms career prospects (前景).That is because unbearable hours and intensity are in the opposite direction, reducing the quality of the work.

The research concludes that the level of intensity we apply to the work we do is generally “a stronger predictor of unfavorable outcomes than overtime work”. The research compared people of similar jobs and education levels, and found they were more likely to suffer poorer happiness and worse career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods.

【1】What do we know about Basecamp’s four — day work week?

A.It lasts nearly half a year.

B.The work pressure is too high.

C.There are some management problems.

D.Employees work more than 8 hours a day.

【2】What does Mr. Fried intend to say in paragraph 2?

A.Given plenty of time, people can do more.

B.To get work done well needs plenty of time.

C.People can do a job very well in a short work week.

D.A long work week is appropriate for reduced workload.

【3】What does the research mentioned in the text want to tell us?

A.Getting much more rest.

B.Improving work quality.

C.Refusing a five-day work week.

D.Avoiding working too intensely.

【4】What can be the best title for this passage?

A.More Work, More Profits

B.Shorter Week, Better Reward

C.Less Work, Less Benefits

D.Longer Hours, Higher Intensity

According to the Presidentˈs Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programmes with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

1According to Paragraph 2, what does physical education in high school mean?
