21、A few months after we moved to a small city in France, I wanted to meet my husband for lunch at the university where he worked. I got lost. I had to call him for help. One of his friends said to him later, “How could she get lost? She just needed to go straight.”
Well, no. That’s the problem. You never “just go straight”, because France is the land of roundabouts (弯道). Highways, major streets, little village lanes – if you go straight long enough, you’ll end up going in circles.
Even after a year here, I’d still get lost going to the grocery store, or just about anywhere that wasn’t within a hundred yards of my house.
I admit I have a horrible sense of direction, can’t read a map, and am not such a good driver. Plus, I’ve been spoiled (宠坏) by living in American cities, where you just indeed need to “go straight”. But in France, driving became my nightmare — the roads are roundabouts within roundabouts.
Finally I found a solution: a GPS program on my smart phone. I rely on it to get anywhere, even places I’ve been.
But it does leave me feeling very bad and helpless when, often, the program doesn’t work, can’t find a GPS signal, or gives wrong information. I’d have to wait until my GPS gets recovered, or else I use my old solution: I call my husband. Is the GPS making us more stupid, or helping us going around more? In my case, it’s probably both.

【4】What does the writer think of the GPS program?
A. It’s a satisfactory solution to her problem.
B. It improves her sense of direction.
C. It doesn’t always work very well.
D. It is a useless device for her.
22、When we are little we do all kinds of foolish things, sometimes unwillingly and sometimes on purpose. And parents' next behavior is to punish us and make sure that we won't repeat foolish things.
At an early age parents punish their children as it follows: firstly, they don't allow children to watch TV for a couple of days; secondly, parents don't permit their children to go out and play with their friends; thirdly, children are given different tasks to do—they have to write something several times or they have to stay in the corner of the room, until parents decide to "free" them.
When in their teens, children can receive other types of punishment Most parents punish children by not giving them pocket money, which is the best from of punishment for them. Then, they forbid children to go out on weekends or return home after a certain hour. Besides, parents also refuse to give them food. It means that children have to prepare meals alone as they have no other choice.
Sometimes, these forms of punishment have positive(积极的) results and children won't repeat the bad things they have done. However, if a child is used to doing bad things then all these punishments will be of no importance to him or her. He or she will carry out the punishment and after a short period of time will do another one.
【1】Parents punish the children to ________ according to the passage.
A.stop them doing the foolish things
B.help them get good grades
C.do something by themselves
D.help them make good friends
【2】Which of the punishment doesn't belong to an early age child?

A.He can't get the pocket money.
B.He can't go out on weekends.
C.He has to return home after a certain hour.
D.He can't eat the meals prepared by parents.
23、I was not worried about the American education system until after I started writing a column, because that’s when I found out there are English teachers who assign my column as reading material. I regularly get e-mails from students asking about my use of writing techniques and other things I’ve never heard of. To which I respond, “Transfer (转学) high schools immediately! To one that teaches Shakespeare and Homer instead of the thoughtful commentary of a first-rate modern wisdom! Also, don’t do drugs! ”
I can expect to be sending more of these e-mails because of the Common Core State Standards (共同核心国家标准), which public schools are encouraged to follow. The new curriculum standards dramatically shift about half the nation’s high school English reading lists toward an emphasis on nonfiction. In a speech last year, David Coleman, the new president of the College Board, who was one of the chief creators of the Common Core, said, “It is rare in a working environment that someone says, ‘Johnson, I need a market analysis by Friday, but before that I need a vivid account of your childhood.’” I agree with this, but no one has ever asked me for a market analysis.
Coleman’s idea is that by reading clear, tightly structured nonfiction, kids will learn how to write clear, tightly structured nonfiction. And indeed, the first time I write in a new format-travel essay, screenplay, apology e-mail-I read a bunch of examples. But when I want my writing to improve, I read something that forces me to think about words differently: a novel, a poem, a George W. Bush speech. Fiction teaches you how to tell a story, which is how we express and remember nearly everything. Anyway, school isn’t merely training for work; it’s training for communication throughout our lives.
【1】How did the author feel after his column was used as students’ assignment?
A.Proud.
B.Satisfied.
C.Concerned.
D.Disappointed.
【2】What should high schools do according to David Coleman?
A.Stress nonfiction.
B.Read more fiction.
C.Teach market analysis.
D.Encourage writing.
【3】Why does the writer turn to a George W. Bush speech?
A.To create words.
B.To better his writing.
C.To tell a story.
D.To follow the format.
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.The shift of teaching techniques.
B.The trend of reading Shakespeare.
C.The effects of the new curriculum standards.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Pam Bales planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire^ Mount. On the dashboard (汽车仪表板) was a detailed plan ensuring she could return before the arrival of some forecasted bad weather. Different from former hike, though, this time, she had packed for almost every accident and intended to walk alone.
At about 8 a.m., she'd checked the weather forecast. Bales knew from experience that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better protect her core temperature as conditions changed.
Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. She was wearing a fleece tank top (绒衣)and hiking pants, and no gloves or hat because the air was mild. Thirty minutes later, she climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She now was in a quarter-zip fleece top and gloves. At 10 a.m.? the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added more layers to resist cold winds and dense fog. Making her way across the snow-covered ridge, she noticed something: a single set of footprints made by a pair of sneakers. Not giving them much thought, she walked on.
By 11 a.m.? Bales was getting cold. She decided to return to her car. On her way down, she again spotted the sneaker tracks, which suddenly made a hard left-hand turn off the trail. Now she felt genuinely alarmed. She was sure the hiker lost his way in the low visibility. If Bales continued to follow the tracks, she'd add risk and time to her return. But she couldn't let this go. She turned to the left and called out, “Hello!" Nothing.
Bales followed the tracks, rounded a slight comer and saw a man sitting motionless. He wore tennis sneakers, shorts, a light jacket and fingerless gloves. His skin was pale and he had a glazed (呆滞的)look on his face. uOh5 hello/5 Bales approached and said, "What's your name?” The man didn't react. Obviously, nothing was connecting for him and he was in really big trouble.
