21、 Born in 1956 in Detroit, Michigan, Robert Wyland began his career in painting at the age of three. With a few cans of house paint found under the kitchen sink, he painted his first mural(壁画),dinosaurs, on the headboard of his parents’ bed.
Today you never know where you might find Wyland, but chances are that you will have to look up. This painter, sculptor, and muralist now paints giant-sized murals of sea animals on much larger canvases(画布): walls and ceilings of hotels and other buildings, and even the outside of a stadium.
His project, the Whaling Walls, began in 1981 when Wyland painted a life-sized mural of a gray whale(鲸) and her baby on the side of a hotel in Laguna Beach, California. His goal was to paint one hundred whaling walls, which has been achieved. Painting so many murals would be a huge project for any artist, but the size of these murals is what has really made this a giant task.
How does Wyland go about creating such huge lifelike murals? Wyland says he relies on what he calls his “mind’s eye”. He explains that through his mind’s eye he can look at a blank canvas and form a picture of the finished mural in his mind.
To cover such large areas, Wyland, who is afraid of heights, depends on scaffolding(脚手架) to help him move around and produce his murals. But unlike most artists who can step back to survey their work, Wyland has to rely mostly on his memory.
For accuracy in his artwork, Wyland spends as much time underwater as he does painting. He dives to study his subjects and learn more about them in their natural environment. Through his artwork, Wyland hopes to inspire people to care more about our oceans and to respect and protect the life within them. The whales he works so hard to protect may not know it , but Wyland might just be the best friend a whale could have.
【1】Where did Wyland paint his first mural?

22、When people think of farming today, they usually picture a tractor (拖拉机) rather than horses in the farmland. That’s because tractors that relied on engines revolutionized farming in the late 1800s. Now a new type of tractor can do the same in the 21st century.
Agriculture has been changing dramatically in the last few decades. The push for innovation is fed by the need to produce larger amounts of food for a growing world population. Autonomous tractors may be the key to solving this challenge. They can be used to carry out labor-intensive (劳动密集型) farming while allowing farmers to do other work. A big plus is that it can increase crop output while reducing costs because the autonomous machines can work in all weather conditions without any rest.
Part of push for automation is a shortage of farm workers due to people’s desire to have higher paying jobs with better work conditions. Farm owners are competing against companies like Amazon and restaurants that are raising wages to attract workers. “With labor shortages and the increase in the hourly wages that have to be paid in order to be competitive, all of a sudden automation seems like a more reasonable decision,” said David Swartz, a professor at Penn State University.
Many believe the time is ripe for an autonomous revolution because robotics is already in use in agriculture. One company that is working to bring autonomous tractors into mainstream farming is Blue and White Robotics, an Israeli agricultural technology company, whose mission is to make a fully autonomous farm. The company released an autonomous tractor kit in February 2021 that can be fixed on any existing tractor. The kit includes camera detection, speed controls, as well as an anti-crash system. Blue and White’s kit is being used by West Coast growers in the US. It may soon come to a farm near you.
【1】What contributes to the agricultural revolution according to Paragraph 2?
A.The urge to feed more people.
B.The extreme weather conditions.
C.The need to reduce farming cost.
D.The desire for automatic farming.
【2】What is Swartz’s attitude to automation?
A.Critical.
B.Negative.
C.Supportive.
D.Tolerant.
【3】What can be inferred about Blue and White’s kit?
A.It has been widely used.
B.It can be made in many firms.
C.It can improve safety of tractors.
D.It will detect the way of farming.
【4】What may be a suitable title for the text?
A.Automation Is Transforming Agriculture
B.Big Companies Are Making A Difference
C.Driverless Tractors Are Worth Investing
D.Traditional Farming Is Falling out of Date
23、 The day I heard that the Rainbow Bookstore was closing after 50 years of business, I was heartbroken. The bookstore, which was a famous fixture in the neighborhood, was a place where anyone could visit and connect through their love of books.
When I hurried to the store, I saw that the books were already being packed into boxes. I had a long chat with Casey, the store’s elderly owner. Sighing deeply, he told me how it was becoming difficult to run an independent bookstore. Most young people preferred reading e-books on tablets. More and more customers were being attracted by chain stores and online discounts. I tried to think of some words of sympathy, but I had to admit that the Rainbow Bookstore couldn’t stay in business much longer.
A few months later, I was back in the neighborhood during my spring break vacation and was surprised to see that the Rainbow Bookstore was still there and open for business. Its outside surface hadn’t changed, but inside it was like a different world. In one area, a book reading was being delivered. Nearby customers were gathering around shelves selling books, posters and other best-seller-themed gifts. The large board in the corner had been replaced by a big screen, where customers’ comments on the month’s best-seller were being displayed. Clearly, the Rainbow Bookstore was in good, creative hands.
I was told that the community had decided to work together on a campaign to save the Rainbow Bookstore. The campaign had been led by Jennifer Oakley, a saleswoman who had grown up in the neighborhood and who had now taken over the bookstore from Casey.
Under Jenifer’s leadership, the bookstore was being turned into a place for literature-loving members of the community to get together. It had a cafe selling organic food, and there were now more community events such as book readings, poetry recitals and even jazz concerts and movie nights, where people could gather to share an experience that couldn’t be downloaded.
I’m so pleased to see that creativity has brought the old bookstore into the 21st century!

B.A Valuable Lesson

24、As most people know, in the past few years, sandstorms have swept across many cities and areas of North China, polluting the air and disturbing daily lives of human beings. People look dirty and suffer many kinds of illnesses, such as breath difficulty. The sandstorm is such a serious problem that it has not only undermined the industrial and agricultural development of our country but also caused a lot of trouble to the living conditions of the Chinese people. It is expected that effective measures should be taken as soon as possible through our joint efforts to limit its occurrence.
So what should we do with the frightening sandstorms? Some experts put forward practical suggestions as follows: For one thing, more funds ought to be put into tree planting and forest protection so as to keep more water resources within the surface of the earth. For another, governments of all countries should make laws on environmental protection. For example, banning the use of throw-away chopsticks and punishing illegal tree cutting. Scientists should also study and find ways to cut down the degree of its destruction and to improve the whole environment.
How people look forward to sunny days with little breeze touching their faces now and forever! Nevertheless, I am fully confident that the golden days can come back so long as everyone tries his best to protect natural environment from today on.
