21、When you've got too much to do, the natural response is to try to fit in more tasks, in order to free up hours to do the things you love. There are countless books promising to help you, but these attempts don't always work. 【1】
The core problem is that the potential supply of new tasks is endless. Get faster at completing work projects and you'll simply be given more work, thanks to your reputation as an efficient employee. It’s the personal equivalent of what happens when a new lane is added to a motorway to ease traffic jams. 【2】So congestion remains as bad as it ever was.
【3】 Social expectations do, too. Research by historian Ruth Cowan highlights that when washing machines and vacuum cleaners were introduced, housework got more burdensome because standards of cleanliness also rose. Deep down, we believe the false promise of ever more efficiency. Yes, modest improvements in productivity can help you get through more work-but the truth is that there will always be more things worth doing than time in which to do them. 【4】
The option you take is up to you: perhaps you'll decide to tolerate a messy house in order to spend more time reading to your children. Or perhaps you're willing to sacrifice a reputation as the best worker in your office because your side business as a jewellery designer is worth it. 【5】 Otherwise, it’ll get made for you—and you may find yourself replying to emails at 11:30 p.m. on a Friday night.
A.If you want to spend more time with your children, you have to do everything else more efficiently.
B.Instead, the more you struggle to get on top of things’, the busier you find yourself.
C.Get quicker at answering emails, and you’ll get more of them.
D.It's not just work that mounts up as efficiency rises.
E.What maters is making the choice consciously.
F.The extra capacity just attracts more cars.
G.So we always have to make hard choices.

23、Doha, the capital of Qatar,is a city of contrasts(对照). In a few decades it has been transformed from a small port to an international city. Today, its skyline is shaped by rising skyscrapers, but Old Doha---though fast disappearing---can still be found.
Time seems to stand still in the old quarter of the city. On the dusty streets, Indian and Pakistani men sit cross-legged outside tea shops and restaurants. At one end of the road, men queue by the doorways of crowded supermarkets to buy necessities: boxes of teabags, milk, sugar, bread and soap. The shops are dark and poorly stocked. However, only five miles away, on the other side of the city, Doha shows a completely different image. It shines brilliantly with skyscrapers, five-star hotels and noble apartment buildings. The area looks like any other modem district in the world.
Qatar, a tiny gulf(海湾)nation, is a country of vast local and international ambitions. At home, it has owned several international universities. Abroad, it tries to speak louder on gulf affairs. These ambitions are urged by the country’s unbelievably rich reserves of fossil fuels. In December 2012, Daba was the site of Copl8 UN Climate Change Conference and in 2022,Qatar will host the World Cup.
Mohammed Salim, 55, runs a hair salon in the old part of the city where he works as a hair
dresser. When he came to Doha 22 years ago from Pakistan,he recalls,Doha was a quiet town with few modern buildings.“At that time,Doha seemed rather small. There were no big roads or malls at all.” He has noticed a drop in customers to his salon in recent years.“People now tend to go to more fashionable hair salons in shopping malls. Some day this old area will be gone, and my business will probably be gone, too.I'll be sad. I love here, but things are changing. We can’t ignore it.”

24、Traveler
My fifteen-year-old son has just returned from abroad with rolls of exposed film and a hundred dollars in uncashed traveler's checks, and is asleep at the moment. His blue duff e(粗呢) bag lies on the floor where he dropped it. Obviously, he postponed as much sleep a she could:when he walked in and we hugged, his electrical system suddenly switched off, and he headed directly for the bed, where I imagine he be a this old record of sixteen hours.
It was his first trip overseas, so weeks before it, I pressed travel books on him, and a tape cassette of useful French phrases; drew up a list of people to visit; advised him on clothing and other things. At the luggage store where we went to buy him a suitcase, he headed for the duffels, saying that suitcases were more for old people.
During the trip, he called home three times:from London, Paris, and a village named Ullapool. Near Ullapool, he climbed a mountain in a rainstorm that almost blew him off. In the village, a man spoke to him in Gaelic, and, too polite to in terr up, my son listened to him for tenor fifteen minutes, trying to nod in the right places. The French he learned from the cassette didn't hold water in Paris. The French he talked to shrugged and walked on.
When my son called, Is at down at the kitchen table and leaned forward and hung on every word. His voice came through clearly, though two of the calls were like ship-lo-shore communication. When I interrupted him with a “Great!” or a “Really?”, I knocked a little hole in his communication. Sol just sat and listened. I have never listened to a telephone so attentively and with so much pleasure. It was wonderful to hear news from him that was so new to me. In my book, he was the first man to and on the moon, and I knew that I had no advice to give him and that what I had already given was probably not much help.
The unused checks are certainly evidence of that. Youth travel slight. No suitcase, not much luggage and a slim expense account, and ye the went to the scene, and came back safely. Is i there amazed. The night when your child returns with dust on his shoes from a country you've never seen is a night you would gladly turn into a week.
