二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   June 18 is the birthday of my late sister, Tanya. She would have been 49 years old this year, but that’s increasingly difficult for me to imagine. She is frozen in time at 37.

Tanya died more than a decade ago and the wound left by her loss has healed into a scar (伤疤). It's a big scar. You can’t know me for very long without discovering my scar. Trust me; if you haven’t found it on your own, I will point it out to you. I want you all to know that she existed, and that she mattered.

When we first lose a loved one, we ask, “How will I live without you?” and wounds are open and weeping. We don’t know how we’ll cope with the pain. But then the wounds form scars, and we learn to live with our new skins. “How can I remember you?” we ask.

So many people are hesitant to talk about my sister. It is as though mentioning her will remind me that she is dead, and upset my balance when I am so happy. But I never forget my sister, not for a moment.

And so I love it when people mention Tanya’s name. Sometimes I come across one of her friends, and they casually bring up a memory, and it is like a gift.

So if you have friends who have lost loved ones, please don’t avoid talking about their loved one.

You won’t remind them of their loss, because it is always there. They haven’t forgotten their scar. They just don’t point it out to you.

Instead, try to reassure (使安心) them that their loved one is not forgotten. Ask questions about the deceased (逝去的) person’s life. Keep them alive in the only way you can after a person is gone, with your words and your memories.

I love hearing from friends on my sister’s birthday. It makes her present, despite her absence. It reminds us all that she was here. She walked this earth. She was loved, and she mattered. And on June 18, I embrace (欣然接受) my scar.

【1】What does “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The death of the author’s sister.

A.She becomes upset about it.

B.She worries that she must defend her sister.

C.She doesn’t know how to deal with it.

D.She is happy to be reminded of her sister.

【3】What does the author advise us to do when talking to those who lost loved ones?

A.Avoid talking about the person who died.

B.Keep them company as long as you can.

C.Help them to forget their painful scars.

D.Talk with them about the person who died.

【4】Which can be used as the title of the text?

A.Forget Your Loved One

B.Embrace Your Scar

C.Avoid Talking About Your Scar

D.Accept the Truth

22、Recent research confirms what our farming ancestors have known for centuries about hedges (树篱). They conserve precious soil by acting as windbreaks and absorbing rainwater that would otherwise wash it from the fields. And hedges store carbon, putting them in the front line of our bi d to tackle the climate crisis.

However, hedges have had a tough time in the poor countryside, with farmers encouraged to tear them down in pursuit of maximum production and larger field s to accommodate ever-larger machinery. What’s more, some hedges have been ignored. If left to their own devices, they’ll eventually become a line of trees. Some hedges each year lose their structures and fail to fulfil the primary duty as a barrier. Around a half of the nation’s hedges have disappeared in the past century.

There are signs that “the tide is turning”. The search for net zero has aroused many organizations’ interest in the humble hedge’s role as a carbon sink. The Climate Change Committee is recommending a 40 percent increase in hedges: an additional 200,000 km. Such recommendations are starting to drive policy. Cash-pressed farmers will be encouraged to create new hedges and improve their management of existing ones under the new Environmental Land Management Schemes, which will replace many of the existing agricultural support payments in coming years. Meanwhile, initiatives such as Close the Gap, led by the Tree Council, is providing funding and support to plug the gaps in existing hedges with new planting. There’s even an app to help time-pressed farmers do a quick survey to spot where their hedges need some help.

This is a good time for hedges. Take some of the most pressing challenges facing the countryside, and indeed, the world as a whole — the climate crisis, soil erosion (侵蚀), insect attack and wider biodiversity loss — and hedges are part of the solution.

B.Concerned.

C.Humble.

D.Indifferent.

C.Restoring Hedges: Bringing Benefits to the Environment

23、I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, Take your shoes away! Why under my bed! Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didnt notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, Thanks.

Kate and I stayed roommates for rest of the year. We didnt always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

24、My parents immigrated to the U.S. from Guangdong, a province in southern China. The jobs they found in hot kitchens and clothing factories came with long hours, leaving them no time to learn English. So I spent most of my childhood, in Brooklyn, speaking Cantonese, the only language my parents understand. But as I continued my education, I gradually, or deliberately avoided using Cantonese. And as a result, Cantonese avoided me. As it slips from my memory, I also lose my ability to communicate with my parents. For years I have to rely on translation apps and online dictionaries for most of our conversations.

Actually, we speak on the phone only once a week and the conversations are much the same: “Have you eaten yet?” my father asks in Cantonese. Long pause. “No, not yet. You?” I reply. “Why not? It’s so late, my mother cuts in. Long pause.” Remember to drink more water and wear a mask outside.” she continues. “OK. You too.” Longest pause. “We’ll stop bothering you, then.” At age thirty-two, I feel like someone they know instead of their daughter.

On my mom’s sixty-fourth birthday, at the peak of the pandemic, I became increasingly aware of the limited amount of time together. Did I really want to spend the rest of our lives with a language barrier between us? I made it a goal to relearn Cantonese, and, ultimately, rebuild the relationship with my parents. I take Cantonese classes. I watch Wong Kar-wai movies. I repeat Maggie Cheung’s words over and over until I get the tones just right. But, most of all, I call my parents and try to have more meaningful conversations with them, no matter how challenging it gets. Though Cantonese no longer feels natural for me to speak, it will always be my first language---even if it takes a lifetime for us to know each other.

【1】How does the author relearn Cantonese?

A.By asking her parents to teach her.

B.By using translation apps and dictionaries.

C.By reading Maggie Cheung’s books.

D.By taking classes and watching movies.

【2】What is the problem with the author and her parents?

A.They find nothing to communicate.

B.They speak different languages.

C.They grew up in different cultures.

D.They know too much about each other.

【3】What can we learn from the author’s experience?

A.Language matters in communication.

B.Cantonese counts more than English.

C.It’s never too late to learn a language.

D.Call your parents before it’s too late.
