22、Jailbreaking commonly refers to unlocking iOS for iPhones and iPads. Seventeen-year-old George Hotz, or geohot as he liked to be called, was the first person to jailbreak an iPhone. He accomplished his feat in 2007, and many others followed his lead.
Jailbreaking an iPhone offers some distinct benefits. With a jailbroken iPhone, you have numerous ways to change any setting to suit your needs. You can also alter the look and feel of the phone so that it matches your personality. Another advantage of jailbreaking for iPhone users is the ability to install apps not offered in Apple’s App Store. Cydia, an alternative app store for jailbroken iOS devices, offers a variety of apps, some of which cost more than others.
Before jailbreaking your iPhone, you should consider the consequences. Jailbreaking immediately voids (使无效) your iPhone’s warranty, which means that Apple is no longer required to fix your phone if something goes wrong. Jailbreaking also exposes you to the dangers associated with alternative apps. Poor quality apps from alternative app stores may cause your iPhone to crash more often or stop working altogether. After jailbreaking your iPhone, you must also be careful not to allow Apple to install new software on your phone.
Apple naturally discourages its customers from jailbreaking their iPhones. According to the company, jailbreaking doesn’t just affect the security and stability of an iPhone. It can also shorten the phone’s battery life. For many people, this is an important consideration.

23、Susan Williams went to a boarding school. Here is one of the letters she wrote to her parents from the school.
Dear Mom and Dad,
I’m afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school principal(校长)is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer.
The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette in bed. This is against the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all.
As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away. Unfortunately, the cigarette fell into the waste-paper basket, which caught fire. There was a curtain near the waste-paper basket which caught fire, too. Soon the whole room was burning. The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.
The principal says that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.
I am very sorry about this.
Much love, Susan.
P.S. None of the above is true, but I have failed my exams. I just want you to know how bad things could have been!

24、 That little “a” with a circle around it that is found in e-mail addresses is most commonly referred to as the “at” symbol. Surprisingly though, there is no official, universal name for this sign. There are lots of strange terms to describe the @ symbol.
Before it became the fixed symbol for e-mail, the symbol was mostly used to represent the cost or weight of something. For instance, if you bought 6 apples, you might write it as 6 apples @ $1.11 each.
With the introduction of e-mail came the popularity of the @ symbol. The @ symbol separates a person’s online user name from his mail server address, for instance joe@uselessknowledge.com. Its widespread use on the Internet made it necessary to put this symbol on keyboards in countries that had never seen or used the symbol before. As a result, there is really no official name for this symbol.
The actual origin of the @ symbol remains unknown. History tells us that the @ symbol came from the tired hands of the monks(僧侣) in the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages when there were no printing presses, every letter of a word had to be copied by hand for each copy of a published book. The monks that performed these long and boring copying duties looked for ways to reduce the number of strokes (笔划) per word for common words.
Although the word “at” is quite short, it was such a common word in texts and documents that monks in the Middle Ages thought it would be good idea to shorten the word “at” even more. As a result, the monks left out the “t” and created a circle — getting rid of two strokes.
【1】Before becoming a symbol for e-mail, the @ symbol was most commonly used ______.
A.when people referred to the cost or weight of something
B.to represent the word “at” in computer languages
C.to represent the word “at” on keyboards
D.when people wrote business documents
【2】Why did the @ symbol become popular?
A.Because it looked interesting.
B.Because e-mail appeared.
C.Because it was used by monks.
D.Because it was officially used in texts.
【3】We can know from the passage that in the Middle Ages ______.
A.monks were hard-working
B.the printing press was invented
C.the @ symbol was seldom seen in texts
D.the work of copying books needed to be done all by hand
【4】Monks in the Middle Ages replaced the word “at” with the @ symbol mainly to ______.
A.make the word look better
B.save their effort and time
C.keep some information secret
D.make it easier to understand
