二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In a room at Texas Children Cancer Center in Houston, eight-year-old Simran Jatar lay in bed with a drip (点滴) above her to fight her bone cancer. Over her bald (秃的) head, she wore a pink hat that matched her clothes. But the third grader’s cheery dressing didn’t mask her pain and weary eyes.

Then a visitor showed up. “Do you want to write a song?” asked Anita Kruse, 49, rolling a cart equipped with an electronic keyboard, a microphone and speakers. Simran stared. “Have you ever written a poem?” Anita Kruse continued. “Well, yes,” Simran said.

Within minutes, Simran was reading her poem into the microphone. “Some bird soaring through the sky,” she said softly. “Imagination in its head…” Anita Kruse added piano music, a few warbling (, ) birds, and finally the girl’s voice. Thirty minutes later, she presented Simran with a CD of her first recorded song.

That was the beginning of Anita Kruse’s project, Purple Songs Can Fly, one that has helped more than 125 young patients write and record songs. As a composer and pianist who had performed at the hospital, Kruse said that the idea of how she could help “came in one flash”.

The effect on the kids has been great. One teenage girl, curling (蜷缩) in pain in her wheelchair, stood unaided to dance to a hip-hop song she had written. A 12-year-old boy with Hodgkin’s disease who rarely spoke surprised his doctors with a song he called I Can Make It.

“My time with the kids is heartbreaking because of the severity of their illnesses,” says Anita Kruse. “But they also make you happy, when the children are smiling, excited to share their CD with their families.”

Simran is now an active sixth grader and cancer-free. From time to time, she and her mother listen to her song, Always Remembering, and they always remember the “really sweet and nice and loving” lady who gave them a shining moment in the dark hour.

A.It helps young patients record songs.

B.It is supported by singers and patients.

22、Top Tips on Staying Warmer in Colder Months

With the rising cost of living affecting all of us, staying warmer this winter feels like it’s going to be a difficult task. The government has already brought in measures to help with the cost of living. 【1】. Read on for some small tips that could make a big difference and help you stay warmer in colder months.

Love layers

Rather than snuggling into one big jumper, think about wearing plenty of thin layers instead. 【2】 It acts as an insulator(绝缘体)-keeping you warmer than if you just wore one thick one. Don’t forget the thermal underwear when it’s really chilly. Clothes made from wool and cotton are the warmest.

Warm from the inside out

Winter is a great time for rustling up soups and stews, but even a bowl of hot porridge can set you up from breakfast onwards. Eating hot, nutritious dishes can keep you warm and healthy. 【3】

Heat carefully

If you’re able to heat all of your rooms, keep your main living room at 18-21 ℃(64-70℉F) and the rest of your house around 16 ℃(61°F). 【4】Heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before you go to sleep. And don’t forget to have your heating system serviced regularly to make sure it’s working well.

【5】

Staying active is good for your health in general, but if it is too cold to walk outside, then catching up on the household chores is a great way of making sure you’re getting up and about. Even light exercise can keep you warm, so grab that vacuum cleaner or duster, get moving and make your house shine.

A.Do the housework

B.Exercise regularly

C.Given the price of fuel, if this isn’t possible, be selective

D.However, there are still other things you can do to keep the heat in

E.Therefore, try to eat at least one hot meal a day with regular hot drinks

F.Multiple thin layers allow warm air to become trapped between the layers

G.Along with layers, make sure you wrap up in a scarf, hat and gloves when you are outside.

23、   The classic model of education a burst at the start and company training — is breaking down. One reason is the need for new and constantly updated skill. Manufacturing increasingly calls for brain work rather than manual labor.

Pushing people into ever-higher levels of formal education at the start of their lives is not the way to handle the problem. Just 16% of Americans think that a four-year college degree prepares students very well for a good job. Although a vocational education promises that vital first hire, those with specialized training tend to withdraw from the labor force earlier than those with general education perhaps because they are less adaptable.

At the same time on-the-job training is shrinking. In America and Britain it has fallen by roughly half in the past two decades. Self-employment is spreading, leaving more people to take responsibility for their own skills. Taking time out later in life to pursue a formal qualification is an option, but it costs money and most colleges are meant for youngsters.

The market is innovating to enable workers to learn and earn in new ways. Providers from General Assembly to Pluralsight are building businesses on the promise of improving careers. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have turned away from lectures on Plato or black holes in favor of courses that make their students more employable. At Udacity and Coursera self-improvers pay for cheap, short programs. By offering degrees online, universities are making it easier for professionals to polish their skills. A single master’s program from Georgia Tech could expand the annual output of computer-science master’s degrees in America by close to 10%.

Lifelong learning starts at school. As a rule, education should not be narrowly vocational. The curriculum needs to teach children how to study and think. A focus on “metacognition” (元认知) will make them better at picking up skills later in life.

1Which is the reason why traditional education is failing?

A.It bursts educators’ bubble in the beginning. B.Companies can’t afford training fees.

C.Old skills can’t meet the present needs. D.It fails to develop one’s brain.

2What can we infer from the text?

A.The more knowledgeable one is, the more likely he is to be employed.

B.Most Americans are poor at their studies in the college.

C.More than 80% of Americans have to be self-employed now.

D.Returning to college after working is not considered worthwhile.

3What does the underlined word “innovating” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.Reforming its system. B.Declining little by little.

C.Booming all at once. D.Wasting time and energy.

4How do colleges adapt to the present education model?

A.They open online courses. B.They provide easier access to updated skills.

C.They pay for cheap short programs. D.They lower the standard for master’s degree.

24、Many scholars agree that a meaningful existence comes down to three factors: the coherence of one’s life, the possession of clear long-term goals and the belief that one’s life matters. But we believe there is another element to consider.

Imagine the first butterfly you stop to admire after a long winter or the scenery atop a hill after a fresh hike. Sometimes existence delivers us small moments of beauty. When people are open to appreciating such experiences, these moments may further improve how they view their life. We call this element experiential appreciation, an ability to detect and admire life’s inner beauty as events happen.

To better understand this appreciation, we conducted a series of studies involving over 3,000 participants. Initially, we had participants rate their coping strategies to ease their stress. Those managing stress by focusing on their appreciation for life’s beauty reported experiencing life as highly meaningful. In the follow-ups, we asked them to rate the degree to which they agreed with various statements, such as “I have a great appreciation for the beauty of life” and other statements related to coherence, purpose, existential mattering. Our results showed that the more people indicated that they were “appreciating life”, the more they felt their existence valuable. In the experiment that followed, we further explored the phenomenon by asking participants to watch an awe-inspiring video. They also reported having a greater sense of experiential appreciation and meaning in life in these moments, compared with those watching more neutral videos.

The final results confirmed our original theory: appreciating small things can make life feel more meaningful. But applying that insight can be difficult. Our modern, fast-paced, project-oriented (任务驱动的) lifestyles fill the day with targets. We are on the go, attempting to make the most of our output. This makes it easy to miss what is happening right now. Yet life happens in the present moment. We should slow down, let life surprise us and embrace the significance in the everyday. After all, we live in a wonderful world. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.

【1】Why does the author mention the admiration of a butterfly?

A.To raise a question.

B.To describe a picture.

C.To draw a conclusion.

D.To introduce a concept.

【2】What is mainly explored through the studies in Paragraph 3?

A.The life of the participants involved in the study.

B.The contribution of a long-term goal in life.

C.The theory of experiential appreciation.

D.The analysis of the belief that matters most.

【3】What makes it hard for us to appreciate the present according to the passage?

A.Our modern fast-paced lifestyle.

B.The lack of opportunities.

C.Our focus on individual feelings.

D.The ignorance of future outcomes.

【4】Which of the following suggestions will the author probably agree with?

A.Fill every day with a great many targets.

B.Find the inner beauty of ourselves.

C.Appreciate little wonders of everyday life.

D.Explore the end of a significant life.
