二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Black holes were first put forward by Albert Einstein in 1916. However, scientists had not proved their directly. That changed on April 10, 2019, with the release of the first photo of a black hole in the center of the galaxy (星系)M87, located 55 million light years from Earth.

The photo does not show the black hole itself. That's because they are black and so they can't be seen in space.the scientists used radio signals to capture (拍摄)the black hole's "shadow" —the bright ring that forms around its edge, when light bends because of the extreme gravity around the hole.

The M87 black hole, believed to have a mass 6.5 billion times that of our sun, was captured using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT)—a network of eight powerful telescopes(望远镜.)The telescopes, located in Hawaii, Arizona , Chile, Mexico, Spain and Antarctica, separately captured the black holl' s radio signals over four nights in April 2017, when the weather was fine in all six places. The data was transpcried to a centre where it was dealt with by a supercomputer to form the photo of the black hole's shadow. The researchers say while the photo is slightly blurry, future photos will be clearer as more telescopes are added to the EHT. Black ' holes are not easy to capture on camera because   they are surrounded by thick dusty and hot gases.

Black holes are areas in space where the pulling strength of gravity is so powerful that even light is unable to escape. They can be different widely in size and mass. The smallest,   called "primordial" black holes are as small as a single atom but with a mass of a big mountain. " Stellar' black holes, which are the most common, have a diameter (直径)of about 10 miles and a mass 20 times that of our sun. The largest or “supermassive' black holes, similar to that of M87's, can have a mass . greater than millions, or even billions of suns combined.

【1】What can we infer from the first paragraph?

A.Einstein's predicticn about black holes is right.

B.Einstein captured the black hole a century ago.

C.Scientists haven't proved black holes' presence.

D.The black hole has been known for centuries.

【2】What did the scientists use to capture the black hole's "shadow"?

A.Moon light.

B.Natural light.

C.Radio signals.

D.Sound waves.

【3】What does the underlined word “blurry” in the third paragraph probably mean?

A.Not big.

B.Not clear.

C.Not new.

D.Not attractive.

【4】What can we know about the M87 black hole?

A.It is almost empty.

B.It is the smallest one.

22、The biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a hiking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.

The portable(手提的) washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration(灵感) from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he gave up his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.

Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a flaw(缺点) with his invention – dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.

In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two to three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out(挤出去) and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13-liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.

The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!

1What led Ash Newland to create the Scrubba Wash Bag?

A. His job requirements.   B. His personal experience.

C. His interest in invention.   D. A traditional washboard.

2Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention?

A. The invention was not so convenient.

B. Clothes couldn’t be washed well.

C. The bag couldn’t contain enough water.

D. The cost of the invention was very high.

3It can be inferred that the improved Wash Pack ______.

A. turns to be much environmentally friendlier

B. will replace the traditional washing machines

C. can encourage more people to travel a long distance

D. will be widely used by more travelers in the future

4What is the passage mainly about?

A. Introducing a great new invention.

B. Explaining the development of backpack

C. Listing some common problems for travelers.

D. Comparing two kinds of washing machines.

23、   On January 22nd, 2021, China said it has established a new monitoring and research center for greenhouse gases and carbon neutrality(碳中和) in order to contribute more to fighting climate change. The official announcement of the Monitoring and Assessment Center for GHGs and Carbon Neutrality (温室气体及碳中和检测评估中心), located in Beijing, was made by the China Meteorological Administration. It is expected to play a vital role in providing both technical and scientific support for researchers. The center will gather top scientists in the field from both home and abroad. Apart from providing ways to achieve carbon neutrality, it will also be helpful to make technological breakthroughs in the next three to five years.

The center is tasked with creating a system to evaluate the effectiveness of the country’s efforts to fight climate change. The recruitment (招募) of staff members is expected to be finished in the next two months. A scientific steering committee will also be started in April to guide the center’s operation.

China is determined to peak(达到峰值) its carbon dioxide emissions(排放) before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. One of the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic is that humankind must pursue a green development path and green lifestyle. China will lower its carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by more than 65 percent from the 2005 level and increase its share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 25 percent. By 2030, China will also increase its forest stock by 6 billion cubic meters from the 2005 level, and bring its total installed capacity (装机容量) of wind and solar power to over 1.2 billion kilowatts.

The establishment of the center proves China’s determination to pursue a green development road. It’s a concrete action that China has taken to fight the climate challenge. Carbon neutrality, or a net-zero carbon footprint, means reading a balance between carbon emissions and removing pollutants through carbon sinks and other offset (补偿).

China has sped up research and development of equipment to monitor greenhouse gases and carbon neutrality and achieved encouraging results. However, there is still a long way to go to reach the top world standard.

【1】Why did China start the Center?

A.To produce more greenhouse gases.

B.To gather more scientists worldwide.

C.To contribute more to fighting climate change.

D.To introduce top scientists in carbon neutrality.

【2】When will the recruitment of the staff probably finish?

A.In January.

B.In March.

C.In April.

D.In May.

【3】How soon will China achieve carbon neutrality?

A.In 9 years.

B.In 16 years.

C.In 39 years.

D.In 65 years.

【4】What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.China’s new contribution to climate battle.

B.China peaks its carbon dioxide emissions.

C.The Center’s recruiting new members.

D.Installed capacity of wind and solar power.

Once upon a time, there was a forest which was ruled perfectly by a king “The Lion”. His reputation (声望) spread to kingdoms of other forests. In order to fill the position of kingdom minister, the Lion announced a competition and the news was quickly sent to other kingdoms.

Having learned about the minister’s post, a rabbit rushed to her friend, “The Fox”. “Dear friend! In the neighboring kingdom, a competition is going to be held next Friday for the position of minister. No one can compete with you in terms of the level of your knowledge. If you set out two days earlier to the competition, you will certainly be the minister of the kingdom,” said the rabbit.

The fox prepared to leave for the competition. His long-lasting desire to become a minister was going to come true soon. Although the fox had not yet gained the position, he was full of joy and lost in deep thought. The fox was expecting that he would become the minister of the forest and provide the most essential information to the king.

In fact, the foolish fox left only one day earlier to reach the kingdom. On his way to the neighboring forest, he found that there was a radish (萝卜) field with ripen radishes to eat in the middle of the forest. The moment the fox felt hungry, he dug (挖) the field and ate the radishes happily.

Later the fox continued his journey, and he found a lake full of pure water which was a good place for him to have a swim. The fox swam in the lake and came across a group of crabs (螃蟹). Though the fox was not hungry, he created space for the crabs in the stomach.

With a heavily loaded belly, the fox once again continued the journey. However, he could not walk at great speed as before. He could not even move forward freely.
