二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、As people get older, the types of friends they have tend to change. As young adults, humans have a lot of friends. With age, they often prefer to spend their time with just a few close, positive individuals. Researchers long believed that this change was unique to humans, but a new study finds that chimps also have similar tendencies.

One explanation for the humans to get picky about social connections has to do with awareness of our limited life span. “People monitor how much time we have left in our life and choose emotionally-fulfilling relationships in old age,” says one of the study's lead authors Alexandra G. Rosati, a psychologist at the University of Michigan. As people age, they don’t want to be surrounded by a large group of negative friends, but would prefer to be near a handful of optimistic individuals.

Rosati and her colleagues were curious whether chimps would show similar features even though they don’t seem to be aware of their upcoming death. Researchers used 78, 000 hours of observations made over 20 years from the Kibale Chimpanzee Project in Uganda. The data looked at the social interactions of 21 male chimps between 15 and 58 years old. The researchers only studied male chimps because they show stronger social bonds and have more social interactions than female chimps.

Researchers found that wild chimpanzees share a similar pattern. “They interact with others in more positive ways as they get older. Younger adults, in contrast, show more aggression and were more likely to form one-sided relationships where their partner did not reciprocate. ”says Rosati. For example, the older chimpanzees would sit close to their long-time companions and groom (给……梳毛) each other, while younger chimps had more one-sided relationships where they would groom a friend, but the action wasn't returned. The study was published in the journal Science.

“This aging pattern may be the result of shared changes in our abilities to manage our emotions with age,” Rosati says. “This shared pattern between chimpanzees and humans could represent an adaptive response where older adults focus on important social relationships that provide benefits and avoid interactions that have negative consequences as they lose competitive fighting ability.”

22、Supporters of education technology have made big promises over the past two decades: that by 2019, half of all secondary school courses would be online; that videos and practice problems can let students learn mathematics at their own speed; or that typical students left alone with internet-connected computers can learn anything without the help of schools or teachers.

Then in 2020, people around the world were forced to turn to online learning as COVID-19 shut down schools. It was education technology’s big moment, but for many students and families, remote learning has been a disappointment. When the world needs it most, why has education technology seemed so unsatisfactory?

Educational software has a long history, but there have been two major challenges. The first is that most people depend on human connection to maintain their motivation(动力). When a student closes his computer while having a class, nobody can see it and respond accordingly.

The second challenge is that assessments are especially tough. We can ask students to work out how far a tectonic plate (地壳板块) might move and computers can immediately tell whether the answer is right. But if we ask them to write a paragraph that explains how the tectonic plate works, computers can’t identify correct, partially correct and incorrect responses.

Education technology has long promised to transform (彻底改变) education, but at best, the field has developed individual tools for the curriculum(课程). For school learning, we don’t have online tools or resources that are any better than a printed textbook.

Every technological solution is also a human capital problem: learning with technologies requires giving teachers and students time to play with and get used to new tools and routines. For most teachers, the road to more effective teaching with technology looks less like a transformation, and more like tinkering: a slow and steady process towards finding the right tool or approach for particular students.

【1】What's the purpose of paragraph 1?

A.To show off the fruitful past.

B.To lead in the unsatisfactory reality.

C.To prove the efficiency of online learning.

D.To explore the potential of educational software.

【2】According to the text, education technology fails to________.

A.give students immediate responses

B.provide students with correct answers

C.remind students to keep focused in class

D.equip students with communication skills

【3】The author’s attitude towards education technology can be described as________.

A.doubtful

B.confused

C.supportive

D.hopeful

【4】What should teachers do according to the last paragraph?

A.Seek new technological tools for education.

B.Guard against the popularity of online education.

C.Use education technology based on students’ needs.

D.Make thorough changes to their technology teaching.

23、   “The fact that the smoke reached São Paulo and blackened an afternoon proves how unusual the fires that burn in the countryside of Brazil are,” Ricardo Mello, head of the World Wide Fund for Nature's (WWF) Amazon program, said.

The latest figures come at a time of international protest against the inaction of President Jair Bolsonaro's administration. In July, Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE) showed data to the public, which indicated that there had been a significant rise in deforestation (毁林) rates. Particularly, the figures showed that in July 2019, deforestation had increased nearly 300 percent in comparison to the same month in 2018.

Environmentalists are becoming increasingly concerned, accusing the government of encouraging deforestation and those who want to make use of the forest for commercial gain. During his time in power, Bolsonaro has moved to rob some power of government agencies that are responsible for protecting the rainforest as well as regulations covering native lands and nature reserves. Bolsonaro sees these kinds of regulations as a drag on economic growth in the Amazon region.

Fire in the Amazon is used as a technique to clear land for agriculture. “Farmers clear cut land to make way for agriculture, and then wait for the dry season to set fire to clear the land so they can plantMello said. “It's likely that all of these forest fires are deliberately set by humans.”

Now it is the dry season in the Amazon, which means conditions in many parts of the rainforest are suitable for the fires to spread over large areas. “It is very unlikely that those fires break out naturally Mello said. “It is important to remember that 2019 is not a strong El Niño year. When we have strong El Niños, weather gets drier in the northern part of Brazil and this favors fires. This is not the case of 2019.”

1Why are deforestation figures of 2018 and 2019 compared?

A.To share knowledge of the Amazon forest.

B.To show how the Brazil president governs.

C.To stress the seriousness of deforestation.

D.To express the anger of environmentalists.

2What does President Bolsonaro do for deforestation?

A.Weakening relevant government agencies.

B.Encouraging the fight for commercial gain.

C.Using techniques to clear land for agriculture.

D.Defending regulations about nature reserves.

3What are the weather conditions of the Amazon when the fires break out?

A.They're fit for fires to break out naturally.

B.The Amazon experiences the dry season.

C.They're possible for fires to spread everywhere.

D.The Amazon is just in a strong El Niño year.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Jair Bolsonaro's Administration Was Accused

B.Farmers Cleared Amazon Land for Agriculture

C.Unusual Rainforest Fires: Effects on Health and Weather

D.Amazon Fires: Possibly Linked to Environmental Policies

24、

What are you doing this weekend? Perhaps you're spending time with family, hanging out with friends, or maybe you're going to play a sport. All around the world, people chill out at the end of the working week and take part in leisure activities. In many countries, the weekend consists of Saturday and Sunday, while in others Friday and Saturday are the days of rest. In Afghanistan, Thursday and Friday form the weekend, while in one country, Brunei, Friday and Sunday are the days off.

Have you ever stopped to wonder, though, exactly where it originated? And how is the concept going to change? The modern weekend took shape during the Industrial Revolution. In the early 19 century, in areas such as the north of England, people began to leave the countryside to work in towns and cities. There, new factories were springing up. Their working lives were once ruled by nature, with the amount of work depending on the changing seasons. Now, their employers demanded a different rhythm-a six-day week of up to 12 hours a day, followed by one day of rest.

Campaigns for workers' rights appeared. By the end of the century they had managed to reduce the working week to five and a half days. This meant that working people could take an interest in hobbies such as photography, which was very new at the time. In the US in the 1920s, the industrialist Henry Ford helped to create the weekend. He gave all his workers Saturday and Sunday off work. His factories manufactured cars, and he wanted to allow his employees time to purchase and enjoy the cars they were producing.

These days, in many countries, working a 40-hour week is normal. Many people have a nine-to-five job, but even that is rapidly changing. Technology enables more people to work from home and plan their own use of time. This means that an official period away from work is becoming less important. Perhaps in the future we will work fewer hours altogether. If we become more productive, we should be able to afford the same lifestyle by working fewer hours. It has been estimated, for example, that a worker in the US can achieve a 1950s standard of living by working just 1l hours a week. Some people have recommended a 21-hour working week to help with unemployment, climate change and inequality. However, a change like that may mean more leisure time but it will probably limit people's ability to earn money to enjoy it.

【1】What does the underlined word “originated” in the second paragraph mean?

A.Relaxed.

B.Started.

C.Appeared suddenly.

D.Stopped.

【2】What happened as a result of campaigns on behalf of workers?

A.People became more inventive.

B.People worked fewer hours per day.

C.People worked fewer hours overall.

D.People found employment in leisure industries.

【3】The writer says an American businessman gave his workers time off so that ________

A.he could produce more cars.

B.they could spend money on cars.

C.he didn’t have to pay them to drive.

D.they would enjoy working with him.

【4】Why does the writer suggest the weekend may be less important now?

A.Because we start work later than we used to

B.Because nobody works over 40 hours a week.

C.Because technology empowers individuals to arrange their own time.

D.Because people are out control of their working week.
