二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Dr. Michael Prager, a leading Botox expert, said that a growing number of women are developing something called “computer face”. He also mentioned that professionals who worked long hours in front of a screen were ending up with saggy jowls(颚骨), “turkey neck” and deep-set wrinkles on their forehead and around their eyes.

The Botox expert said that, of all his clients, office workers were most likely to show premature(过早的)signs of ageing. “If you are one of the unfortunate people who frown(皱眉)while you are concentrating on the screen then, over time, you will inevitably end up with frown lines,” Dr. Prager said. “What is perhaps more surprising is the number of women with saggy jowls because they are sitting in one position for so long. If you spend most of the time looking down then the neck muscles shorten and go saggy, eventually giving you a second neck. “

Dr. Prager, who has a practice near Harley Street in London, said he encourages his clients to put a mirror next to their computer so they can see if they are frowning at the screen. “When people are stressed or thinking hard about something, then they will often put on a ‘grumpy(脾气暴躁的)face’ without even knowing what they are doing. When my clients put a mirror next to their desk, they are often shocked by the angry, frowning face which stares back at them.”

He said, “The women I am seeing at the moment have only been using computers at work for the last decade or so. But women in their 20s have grown up with them and use them for every single task. I think the problem is going to become much, much worse. In another ten years, they could be looking quite awful.”

Dr. Prager said there were several simple steps which could avoid “computer face” such as regular screen breaks and stretching the neck muscles. And, of course, there was always Botox. He said that, after a couple of sessions of Botox, the habit of “grumpy face” could be broken.

1In what way do women develop a “computer face”?

A. Frowning every now and then.

B. Concentrating on computers frequently.

C. Working for too long in front of a screen.

D. Sitting in the same place for a long time.

2According to the passage, which of the following are signs of ageing?

A. Saggy jowls and short necks.

B. Turkey neck and frown lines.

C. Deep-set wrinkles and angry faces.

D. Second neck and stressed muscles.

3From the last 2 paragraphs, we can learn that ______.

A. “computer face” is avoidable

B. we should give up using computers

C. we should break the habit of “grumpy face”

D. the younger generation is worse at computers

22、Sugar cane(甘蔗)contains around 10% sugar. But that means it contains around 90% non-sugar—the material known as bagasse (甘蔗渣)which remains once the sugar-bearing juice is squeezed out. World production of cane sugar was 185 million tonnes in 2017 , which results in a lot of bagasse.

At the moment, most of it is burned. But Zhu Hongli, a mechanical engineer at Northeastern University, in Boston, thinks it can be put into better use. As she, and her colleagues describe, in Matter this week, with a bit of improving bagasse makes an excellent and biodegradable (可生 物降解的)replacement for the plastic used for disposable food containers such as coffee cups.

Dr. Zhu is not the first person to have this idea. But previous attempts tended not to survive contact with liquids. She knew from previous research that the main reason why past efforts fell to pieces when wet is that bagasse is composed of short fibres which are unable to hold the finished product. She therefore sought' to insert a suitably long-fibred substance.

Bamboo seemed to be the best choice. It grows quickly /degrades readily and has appropriately long fibres. And it worked. When the researchers blended bamboo remaining into bagasse, they found that the result had a   strong crossing of short and long fibres.

To put their new material through its paces, Dr. Zhu and her colleagues first poured hot oil onto it and found that, rather than passing through the material, as it would have with previous, bagasse products, the oil was resisted by their invention.

They also found that when they made a cup out of the stuff and filled it with water heated almost to boiling point, the cup remained unbroken for more than two hours. Though this is not as long as a plastic cup would   Hast, it-is long enough for all practical purposes.

【1】What do we know about bagasse?

A.It is widely used.

B.It is usually wasted.

C.It can not be degraded.

D.It takes up 10% of sugar cane.

【2】Why do the previous attempts fail?

A.The cups are not disposable.

B.The fibres of bagasse are short.

C.The plastic can not be replaced.

D.The material is not biodegradable.

【3】What is special about Zhu's invention?

A.It can let oil pass through.

B.It can be boiled in the water.

C.It can hold liquid and resist heat.

D.It can reduce the use of bamboo.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

A.New Bamboo Containers

B.A New Application of Fibres

C.Young and Promising Materials

D.A Perfect Mix of Cane and Bamboo

23、   Many cultures follow different calendars and celebrate the New Year at different times. The Lunar New Year is one example.1. Here is a look at a few of them:

Getting rid of bad luck

Many cultures have traditions meant to scare off demons (恶魔) and bad luck. This often involves using fire or loud noises—or both—often in the form of fireworks!2. For example, just before the New Year, people in Denmark find the highest surface they can and jump from it as the New Year starts.

3.

Many cultures have certain foods that are said to bring good luck. In the southern part of the United States, people often eat black-eyed peas and pork for good luck in the New Year. In other parts of the U.S., people eat sauerkraut with pork sausage on New Year’s Day. And in Japan, people eat soba noodles on New Year’s Eve, 4—which represent longevity (长寿).

Clothing traditions

5. But some traditions take it a step farther than that. In Japan, for example, people who believe in Buddhism may dress up like the zodiac animal for the coming year. Then they go to a temple to, literally, ring in the New Year. At Buddhist temples, monks will ring a bell 108 times, one for each humanly sin.

A.Food for good luck

B.All kinds of cultures

C.Before they drink, they will always pray to God

D.While they eat, they try not to break the long noodles

E.Of course, some traditions meant to avoid bad luck do not involve fire at all

F.To start the New Year off on the right foot, many people like to wear new clothing

G.No matter when you celebrate, there are many traditions around the world for ringing in the New Year

24、Our culture has changed greatly as a result of the smartphone. We can get reassurance for every doubt by texting our friends or feel approval by getting “likes” on our social media. But heavy dependence on devices is responsible for a shift in how we regulate our emotions. A by-product of this instant communication is a decreased ability to sit with uncertainty.

Intolerance to uncertainty tends to cause a range of psychological difficulties. Psychologists consider a person’s over-dependence on their phones as a “safety seeking behaviour” which reduces anxiety in the moment. But over time, safety behaviours actually feed anxiety because they prevent people from realizing their fear has no basis once the situation has actually unfolded, or that it is something they’re able to deal with.

Learning to face uncertainty is essential to managing our mental health. Being more comfortable with uncertainty improves a person’s ability to deal with worry and is closely associated with improvement for those experiencing anxiety. When treating anxiety, psychologists encourage clients (客户) to sit without knowing the outcome of a particular situation and wait to see if what they are afraid of will happen. They gradually learn to let go of trying to control situations and realizes they can survive the uncertainty.

Using phones to push the worry onto another person prevents self-management from occurring. Often, we don’t realize that after a little while the unpleasant feeling will go away. Keep in mind the old saying that “no news is good news” and resist the tendency to message first. If something unpleasant happens, it is healthy to talk to someone and reflect on a situation that upsets us, especially if it is really important. However, to have this as the first option to manage every doubt is not healthy. Being able to wait and let go of the desire to control each situation is a major key to overcoming anxiety.

【1】What might be a consequence of relying on electronic devices too much?

A.Getting “likes” more easily.

B.Being able to sit attentively.

C.Sending text messages rarely.

D.Having trouble controling feelings.

【2】Why do the phone addicts feel anxious?

A.They realize their fear has no basis.

B.Their physical security is threatened.

C.They fail to judge the reality correctly.

D.Their safety isn’t guaranteed in the real world.

【3】What are the clients asked to do to treat anxiety?

A.Learn to face uncertainty.

B.Pay attention to the worries.

C.Keep in touch with psychologists.

D.Consider the outcome of a situation.

【4】What is the author’s advice to remove anxiety?

A.Wait and see.

B.Talk to someone.

C.Take control of it.

D.Let go of the past.
