二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、There once lived a woman who had been blind for decades. Then one day she found a doctor who treated the woman with a new device she had invented called the Laserphaco Probe. For the first time in over 30 years, the woman could regain her eyesight. The doctor responsible for this life-changing surgery was called Dr. Patricia E. Bath.

Dr. Bath was an American ophthalmologist (眼科医生), researcher, and an advocate for the prevention, treatment, and cure of blindness. She had an interest in science and medicine from a young age, which she said was first evoked by a chemistry kit her mother had bought for her when she was young.

During a fellowship at Columbia University, Dr. Bath realized that African Americans were twice as likely to suffer from blindness than other patients she attended to. This observation led to her development of a community ophthalmology system, which increased the amount of eye care given to underserved communities. This allowed thousands of people to get early preventative care for conditions that would have otherwise been untreated saving the eyesight of many.

Dr. Bath invented the new technique to remove cataracts(白内障)by the Laserphaco Probe. This technique is still used around the world, and it has allowed doctors to restore patients’ eyesight in a more precise, and less painful, manner than techniques before it.

Cataracts develop as people age. They form when the proteins in the lens(晶状体)of the eye break down, making the lens cloudy. This can significantly affect vision. Traditional cataract surgery involved removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens. However, this surgery was not always successful, and could be quite painful. Dr. Bath succeeded in solving the problem.

Dr. Bath made innovative contributions to the field of medicine which had long-lasting impacts on the communities she served.

22、Beijing normally doesn’t have much snow in winter, so artificial snow was used at venues (场地) for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

“This is by far the best man-made snow I’ve ever skied on,” American freestyle skier Ashley Caldwell said at a press conference.

Although sometimes mixed with natural snow, artificial snow has mostly been used in competitions in the past five to 10 years.

Snow-making machines were first used at the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympics in the United States. At Sochi 2014 in Russia, 80 percent of the snow was artificial, and the figure was 90 percent at Pyeongchang 2018 in South Korea.

Cooled water and compressed (压缩的) air are mixed in the machine and shot out into water droplets (水滴). With the help of low temperatures, these droplets will become ice crystals.

There are totally nine types of snow made by snow machines, with different water content. The smaller type number is closer to powder snow. The larger number means the snow is wetter. Drier snow is used in the daytime, while No. 7 or No. 8 snow is used during the nighttime with over minus 20 degrees Celsius. Different types of snow are chosen for different sports.

“In most cases, No. 5 snow is used,” revealed Wei Qinghua, mountain operation manager of the Zhangjiakou Guyangshu venues for Beijing 2022.

However, there are concerns regarding the environmental problems of using so much water for snow-making.

“Water used for snow-making only comes from rainfall and surface runoff (径流), and it can be recycled,” Wei pointed out.

“For water from melted snow, we have two lakes which can store it so that it can be used for agriculture, irrigation, tourism and landscaping.”

【1】Why are Ashley Caldwell’s words mentioned in the text?

A.To explain the advantages of artificial snow.

B.To show the quality of the artificial snow used.

C.To comment on the management of the venues.

D.To call for attention to the research on artificial snow.

【2】What can we know about artificial snow from the text?

A.It is still not as good as natural snow.

B.It is made of water and ice mixed in machines.

C.It falls into eight types depending on water content.

D.It has been widely used in the Olympic Winter Games.

【3】What kind of snow is used in the night?

A.Natural snow.

B.No. 3 snow.

C.Drier snow.

D.Wetter snow.

【4】How do they prevent affecting the environment according to Wei Qinghua?

A.Water from melted snow is collected and reused.

B.Natural snow is made use of as much as possible.

C.Underground water is pumped up for use.

D.Snow-making is made more energy efficient.

23、The masked shrew is one of the smallest mammals(哺乳动物) in North America, only a few inches long. However, it recently made a giant jump. Over the past few decades, the tiny shrew has migrated more than 4,000 feet on both sides of the Rocky Mountains. And it’s not the only one.

Studies in other parts of the world have suggested that mountain animals are climbing higher. Lead study author Christy McCain, an ecologist at the University of Colorado Boulder, and her co-authors Sarah King and Tim Szewezyk wanted to show it is true in the Rockies.

The new study looked at 47 different species of small mammals in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. First, the researchers studied the small mammal samples (样本) collected in Colorado over the last few decades and built a database on where these mammals were typically found and how high up. Next, they conducted a series of field surveys in the Colorado Rockies, counting small mammals and recording where each species is found today. They then calculated how much each mammal population has moved over the last few decades.

They found that 26 of the 47 species studied had moved upward over time. Masked shrews were among the species with the largest jumps, climbing a total of about 4,500 feet. McCain noted that species with the largest upward jumps tend to share some important characteristics. Most of them are animals specifically adapted to cold weather. 11 of the 47 mammal species actually shifted downward. McCain noted they may be less sensitive to mountain warming. Six species do not appear to have changed at all. And four species have completely disappeared from the mountains in the period between the 1980s and now.

“This is the first indication,” McCain said, “that large animal communities are responding to climate change.” The findings are consistent with the conclusions of other studies around the world — that mountain ecosystems are sensitive to climate change and wildlife in these places is already responding to the pressure, both of which can urge humans to change the current situation.

【1】Why did Christy McCain and her team do the study?

A.To collect data of mountain animals.

B.To urge humans to change the situation.

C.To prove the previous conclusions.

D.To assess the effects of climate change.

【2】What does the study find about mountain mammals?

A.Many species have disappeared.

B.None have shifted downward.

C.Those going higher are sensitive to cold.

D.Many are affected by climate change.

【3】What can the findings function as?

A.A wake-up call.

B.A climate reminder.

C.A pressure response.

D.A situation changer.

【4】What’s the main theme of the text?

A.Mountain mammals climb higher to beat the heat.

B.Cold-adapted species suffer a lot in the Rockies.

C.Climate change is making the Rockies unlivable.

D.Small mammals are vital to mountain ecosystems.

24、The LEGO Group, whose plastic building toys are familiar to many people, has been working on making LEGO bricks out of recycled plastic. The bricks aren't ready yet, but the company says it's making progress.

Since roughly 1960, LEGO bricks have been made from ABS plastic which makes LEGO bricks very tough and gives them great clutch power so that the things users build don't fall apart easily. Sadly, ABS plastic can't really be recycled and it takes an extremely long time to break down.

However, since 2015, LEGO has been trying to make earth-friendly products. Making bricks from recycled materials could cut pollution from the company's bricks by 70%. But making bricks out of recycled plastic is challenging. The goal is to make bricks out of PET plastic, which is softer than ABS plastic and can be found in things like bottles and clothing. A recycled one-liter plastic bottle could make about ten 2×4 LEGO bricks. Over the past three years, the company has tested over 250 different ways of creating LEGO bricks from recycled plastic. A team of more than 150 people are working on the problem. Tim Brooks, who focuses on environmental responsibility at LEGO, says that experimenting and failing is “an important part of learning”.

Now, the company says they can make a good 2×4 brick from PET. One important step was finding a way of adding things to PET plastic to make it tougher and give it better clutch power like ABS. They will also work on shaping bricks into other forms and adding color to them-right now they are just white. The bricks will go through many different tests, which will take at least a year.

The company aims to make all their main products out of sustainable materials by the year 2030. “We know kids care about the environment and we want to tell them we're working on it.” said Mr. Brooks.

【1】Which of the following can best describe LEGO bricks made from ABS plastic?

A.Strong and firm.

B.Recyclable and soft.

C.Cheap and familiar.

D.Popular and new.

【2】Why is LEGO working on making PET plastic bricks?

A.Because the company wants to show that it's making progress.

B.Because this has always been LEGO's goal since its foundation.

C.Because using PET plastic bricks can reduce pollution to the earth.

D.Because PET plastic bricks are much softer and cheaper.

【3】What can we learn about making PET plastic bricks?

A.LEGO has found a way to make colorful PET plastic bricks.

B.It's not necessary to put things into PET plastic to make it tough.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My great-grandfather, my grandfather and my father were farmers. My father had a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respected him and was indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I didn’t agree that I should automatically follow in my father’s footstep.

When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father’s friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane, and I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it.

This time I would not hide my desire any more.
