Mickey Wilson had been on the mountain only a few seconds when he heard the scream. Wilson, 28 years old, had just gotten off the cable car (索道缆车) at the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Keystone, Colorado, along with his friends Billy Simmons and Hans Mueller. Their friend Richard had been on the cable car ahead of them, but when the men reached the top of the lift, he had disappeared. The men walked toward the source of the scream and found skiers stopped on the slope, pointing to the cable car. And then the friends screamed too.
“Oh, Richard!” yelled Mueller.
When Richard had tried to jump off the cable car, his backpack had been caught in the chair, which then dragged him back down the hill. In the process, the backpack belt twisted around his neck, making him breathless. Now Richard’s body was swinging four feet above the snow. The cable car operator had quickly stopped it, and the friends kicked off their skis and ran toward the scene. They made a human pyramid to try to reach Richard, but the unconscious man was too far off the ground. With the clock ticking, Wilson ran to the ladder of a nearby lift tower. Scared skiers watched as he struggled the 25 feet. After he reached the top, Wilson’s first challenge was to climb onto the two-inch steel cable that held the chairs. He handled the balance and height bravely, but he knew he could not walk on the cable. Therefore, he calmed down and sat over it and then used his hands to pull himself to Richard quickly. Wilson’s greatest fear wasn’t that he’d fall, but that he wouldn’t reach Richard. “This was life or death,” he said.
When he reached Richard’s chair, Wilson swung a leg over the cable and attempted to drop down onto it. But as he did that, his jacket caught on the movable footrest, which was in the up position. The footrest began to slide down, with Wilson attached. But before that could happen, he managed to free himself and reached Richard.
Fortunately, the ski patrol (巡查) had gathered below and performed emergency treatment on Richard, who had been hanging for about five minutes, then skied him down to an ambulance.
That night, Richard called from the hospital to express his thanks to Wilson, his other friends and the workers at the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.

22、An Arkansas doctor, T. Atiq helped his former patients face the New Year with less debt, voiding (使无效) more than $650,000 of unpaid medical bills for those once under his care. Each patient received a card with a personal greeting from their doctor. The note thanked each patient for trusting Dr. Atiq with their care followed by the generous surprise. “If this gave them a little bit of assistance then I am grateful to have had the opportunity to do so,” the physician said.
Nearly 30 years ago, Dr. Atiq founded the Arkansas Cancer Clinic in the community of Pine Bluffto make cancer care available for the economically disadvantaged. Before its opening, Pine Bluff cancer patients traveled at least 50 miles for treatment. Dr. Atiq was clear that his patients’ needs were always his top concern—not their ability to pay.
Dr. Atiq knew all too well the huge financial pressure often faced by patients. Although he wished all of his patients could simply focus on recovery from disease, many were simply not in a position to—even if they had insurance. And, most of his patients had to work while receiving treatment. Some of his patients, including elderly grandmothers, were already working two jobs before getting sick.
In the same spirit of generosity that Dr. Atiq opened his clinic, he is now closing its doors to begin a new chapter. Dr. Atiq is a full-time professor of Head and Neck Surgery at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, part of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. His patients safely transitioned to a hospital to continue their cancer care.
Dr. Atiq feels his act of kindness was a small gesture in comparison to what his patients have given to him over the years. “The courage and resilience (适应力) that I have learned from my patients are invaluable,” he says. “The issue is their health. I am hoping that they can be cured of cancer. Or, it is controlled well to where they are living productive, happy lives with their families, their friends, and their loved ones.”

B.He has retired from his post.
C.He hopes to stay healthy to treat more patients.
D.He wants to raise public awareness about cancer.
23、 China has become the first country to successfully land a spacecraft on the far side of the moon. The Chang’e 4 probe has also made the first moon landing since1972. It has the task of exploring the side of the moon that never faces the Earth. The dark side of the moon is older and has a thicker surface than the visible side. It takes the moon as long to go around on its own axis as it does for one complete orbit around the Earth.
The Chinese probe landed in a huge crater 2,500 km in diameter and 13 km in depth. The crater is one of the oldest parts of the moon and our solar system.
Scientists hope to learn more about the geology of the far side of the moon. The craft has two cameras on board which will send images back to the Earth. It will also try to send signals to distant regions of space, something that cannot happen on Earth because of too much radio noise.
Chang’e 4 also has instruments on board to examine minerals as well as a container with seeds which will try to create a miniature biosphere.
Communication with the spacecraft is not easy. Images and other data must be transmitted to a separate satellite because no direct communication with the Earth is possible.
For China the Chang’e 4 mission is an important achievement, because the country has successfully done something no other nation on Earth has done. It wants to become a leading power in space exploration and has announced plans to send astronauts to the moon and set up its own space station.
【1】Where did the Chang’e 4 probe land?
A.On the side of the moon facing the Earth.
B.In a previous space station.
C.In a younger crater on the moon.
D.On the invisible side of the moon.
【2】What can we learn from the text?
A.The dark side of the moon is as cold as the other side.
B.The bright side is younger and thinner than the other side.
C.Other places in space may hardly receive signals from the craft.
D.The two cameras on the craft can send pictures to the Earth easily.
【3】Why is the craft equipped with a container?
A.To see what seeds can come out on the moon.
B.To collect some important matter on the moon.
C.To find whether the seeds can grow on the moon.
D.To check whether some minerals exist on the moon.
【4】According to the text, what will China do in the future?
A.Land manned spacecraft on the moon.
B.Build another space station on the moon.
C.Launch more space probes to the moon.
D.Become the first country in exploring space.
24、 It’s not new for labs to use robots. But earlier robots usually stayed in one place.
The UL robot, which scientists at the University of Liverpool (UL) have developed, is the opposite of that. The 1.75-meter robot is similar in size to a human. Though it weighs much more than most people, it’s able to easily move about in the same sort of space as humans do.
It uses a special laser system called LIDAR to guide itself—even in the dark. Once it’s close to a work station, it can move into a more exact position through its touch sensors. With one long arm which can turn in almost any direction, the robot is able to use several different kinds of lab equipment to run its own experiments. Some of the equipment has been changed slightly to make it easier for the robot, but basically and most impressively, it’s the same equipment a human would use. The robot was built and programmed by Benjamin Burger, a PhD student at the university, who says it took a lot of effort to program the robot so that it can do things without making mistakes.
Over the next 8 days, the robot ran 688 experiments, always choosing its next experiment based on the results of the last one.
Andrew Cooper, who led the program says, “The robot ran for 172 hours, stopping for only a couple of hours each day to recharge its batteries. To do the same amount of work would have taken a human several months. It isn’t cheap—it cost around $125,000 and took years to program. But the scientists compare that to the cost of other laboratory equipment which they say can also be quite expensive. The fact that the robot can be used for many different purposes is a huge advantage. It is meant to help scientists, rather than replace them, and it frees up time for the human researchers to think creatively.”
【1】What does the underlined word “that” refer to in paragraph 2?
A.Earlier robots are smaller and lighter.
B.Labs don’t give up the earlier robots.
C.Earlier robots can’t move around.
D.Labs use robots more commonly.
【2】What attracts people most when the UL robot is working?
A.It moves its touch sensors frequently.
B.It spreads its long arms automatically.
C.It is equipped with a special laser system.
D.It uses the same equipment as humans do.

A.It’s inconvenient to get recharged.
B.It’s worth the money and the time.
C.It helps other robots perform tasks.
D.It can inspire scientists’ creativity.
【4】What’s the best title for the text?
A.Robot Runs Experiments on Its Own
B.The UL Robot Finishes Its Experiment
C.Robots Replace Scientists Very Soon
D.The UL Robot Develeps Its Advantages
