21、Whizzfizzing Festival

One of the “Home Counties” to the north and west of London, Buckinghamshire is known for the rolling Chiltern Hills, its pretty villages, and the much-loved children’s author Roald Dahl.

The writer who penned Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Matilda and The Big Friendly Giant is the i9nspiration for the Whizzfizzing Festival – which will transform the market-town of Aylesbury into all kinds of music, colour and fun on Saturday, 1 July.

Formerly known as The Roald Dahl Festival, this year’s event will celebrate a broad range of children’s films and bring to life some of its best-loved characters – from Alice in Wonderland and the Gruffala to The Big Friendly Giant and Harry Potter.

Things to see and do

The fun and festivals start at 11 a.m. with a colourful children’s parade. More than 650 local school children and teachers, many in fancy dress, will march through the town carrying giant carnival puppets(木偶), with thousands of audiences lining the streets to watch.

The parade will be followed with a range of child-friendly activities and workshops held in venues across the town.

Don’t be late for the Mad Hatters Tea Party in the Bucks County Museum, catch a splendid screening of a Roald Dahl movie in the Old Court House, and watch leading children’s authors, including Julian Clary, give readings in the Market Square.

CBeebies’ children’s chef Katy Ashworth will once again be cooking up a storm with her inter-active

Concoction Kitchen, located outside Hale Leys Shopping Centre. Little chefs will have lots of opportunities to get involved with preparing, cooking – and best of all, tasting – Katy’s fabulous recipes.

With hands-on arts and crafts workshops, storytelling sessions, live music, a fancy dress competition, street theatre and more, there is something for everyone.

23、For 52 years my father got up at 5:30 am every morning, went to work, and returned home at 5:30 pm. I never saw my father stayed home from work ill, nor did I ever see my father lay down to take a nap. He had no hobbies, other than taking care of his family. All he asked from me, his daughter, was to help him while he was repairing something, so we could have some time to talk.

For 22 years, after I left home for college, my father called me at 9:00 am every Sunday. Nine years ago when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked for was a glass of iced tea. Five years ago, at age 71, my father spent five hours putting together a swing set for my daughter.

On the morning of January 16, 1996, my sister telephoned me; my father was in the hospital with an aneurysm(动脉瘤) in Florida. I got on an airplane immediately, and on the way I realized that I hadn't communicated with him as much as I'd always wanted to. I vowed(发誓) that when I arrived, I would have a long talk with him. I arrived in Florida at 1 am, only to find that my father, at the age of 76, had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.

24、The DNA of 6.7 million species could be stored inside the Moon in case there's a disaster that destroys life on the Earth. Scientists have a plan to create a “lunar ark”, which is like “Noah's Ark”, the ship in which Noah saved animals from a food, according to the Bible. The lunar ark would contain millions of samples of reproductive cells and seeds from all he 6.7 million known plant, animal and fungi species on the Earth. The researchers think the lunar ark could be put in the hollowed out lava tubes that exit on the Moon's surface. It is thought that these cave-like networks were created by lava billions of years ago. Robots would be sent inside the tubes to start building the ark.

When the ark is complete, scientists think it could be powered by solar panels on the surface so that all the samples inside can be kept at cryogenic temperatures without the risk of being rotten over decades, if not centuries. I will also ne things like an airlock and lighting for human visitors.

Researcher Jekan Thanga and a team of students from the University of Arizona in the US have mapped out the theory. They think it would take 250 rocket trip to the Moon to complete the lunar ark. “Earth is naturally likely to change suddenly,” Professor Thanga said, “It's safer to sore the samples on the Moon in case the Earth is destroyed.”

The lunar ark concept was presented by the researchers at the IEEE Aerospace Conference in early March. They listed super-volcanoes, asteroid impacts and climate change as reasons we might need to store samples of life in case we need to start again. Thanga said: “The environment and human civilization are both very fragile.” Not all of the technology needed to make the ark exists yet but the scientists think it could be made reality within the next 30 years.

【1】Where will the lunar ark be placed on the Moon?

A.On the ship created by Noah.

B.In the cave-like networks made by robots.

C.On the panels powered by the Sun.

D.In the empty lava tubes formed a long time ago.

【2】What does the underlined word “cryogenic” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Mild.

B.Mediate.

C.Low.

D.High.

【3】What can we know from the text?

A.Some problems are to be solved before the lunar ark is built.

B.150 rocket trips to the Moon will be needed to build the lunar ark.

C.The lunar ark can run well without energy.

D.The environment on the Earth is a steady as human civilization.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。(不得直接引用原文句子)

The main benefit you get from studying abroad is independence. I feel great to know that you can manage on your own when necessary. This ability gives you more freedom as well as tolerance. After moving abroad you have to start a totally new life. Setting in a new environment is a big challenge for you, but you have to keep in mind that it is only a small part of studying abroad, and experiences like these can help you build your character and understand the world better.

When I went abroad I knew that I had to find a job and learn to handle my money myself. I did not have a choice. I had to manage on my own. I found a job as a mail carrier for the local newspaper. Not all my co-students were as lucky as me in finding a job right away. You have to keep in mind that besides working you have to attend lectures and do your homework. Carrying mail was not always an easy job, but thanks to it, I got to know many nice people and saw the town and local people from a different view.

Besides looking for a job, I also had to find a place to live in and take care of everyday chores from cooking to doing laundry. When you have only begun with your independent life, this can be quite a challenge. You don’t have experience, nor does anyone give a helping hand---you’re on your own. So it might happen that the first potato you fry ending up darker than intended, but from that on you can only do better.

All the trials you go through increase your independence, teach you a lesson and give you a wonderful experience to manage in difficult situations in the future. Learning in a new environment and taking full responsibility for yourself make your time abroad quite extraordinary.
