二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、These days, most people like using messaging apps when they need to communicate with someone. But sometimes making a call is unavoidable. However, this simple act can actually be a nightmare for some people. 【1】 If this sounds familiar to you, you might be one of the millions of people who suffer from telephobia — the fear of speaking over the phone.

【2】 When speaking face-to-face, we use facial expressions and gestures that help each other follow the conversation. This is not the case over the phone. And the idea of speaking with someone on the phone makes some people so terrified that they will freeze up and look foolish. However, there are things that one suffering from this condition can do to ease this fear.

One thing that those with telephobia can do before a call is smile. 【3】 It won't remove the anxiety altogether, but it will take the edge off (减轻) it.

Similarly, imagining how the call will go before you make it can also help things go more smoothly. That will make you feel less nervous and help you predict some possible problems. There's no need to spend hours on this, just a few minutes forming several ideas of what you want to say. 【4】 This is particularly useful for dealing with the fear of not being able to express yourself spontaneously (自然地).

And finally, when faced with receiving a call, you don't always have to pick up. 【5】

A.Doing so can help you feel more relaxed.

B.It's often the opening lines that give us the most anxiety.

C.Their hearts race and their hands sweat at the very thought of it.

D.People who feel comfortable in social situations may experience telephobia.

E.The most important thing is to be aware of your fear and take steps to deal with it.

F.You can even write down some brief notes to remind yourself of your talking.

G.There's nothing wrong with calling the person back later when you feel more comfortable.

22、During my first year of college, I went on a trip with a group of classmates to New York City for fun. At the end of the day, several of the students suggested hanging out in the city for a while before getting dinner. They ended up spending thousands of dollars at the clothing store. It was only when they had finished that they decided to eat dinner at a place across the street. In the nicest restaurant I had ever been to, I ordered the cheapest appetizer I could find, and sat in silence as the students around me reminisced about their most recent vacations to Europe.

When the dinner was over, a student suggested seeing a Broadway play, and one guy told the group Cabaret was playing for only $ 250 a ticket. I knew I wasn't going to be spending $ 250 for a show. “I have a lot of homework,” I said. “But thanks anyway.” I walked back to the hotel alone.

To be very honest, I find it fascinating to be surrounded by classmates who come from wealthy families I have never experienced. Meanwhile, I'm not embarrassed for being unable to afford the things my classmates buy. I'm proud of who I am, and where I've come from.

On the other hand, one of my classmates had gotten to college on a needs-based scholarship. He didn't have any money. He didn't have a car and relied on brisk walks to get anywhere. He couldn't even afford food, so he worked part time at college food service to make a few dollars and grab leftovers for meals. He certainly kept me grounded as I felt like a spoiled brat using money so freely and buying myself a sandwich whenever I felt hungry.

So, while I was ridiculously wondering about my insufficiency, he showed what real determination and pride were.

【1】What did the author do after dinner?

A.He went shopping.

B.He saw a Broadway play.

C.He walked back to the hotel.

D.He met with a classmate of his.

【2】Why did the author say “I have a lot of homework to do” in paragraph 2?

A.Because he thought homework came first.

B.Because he couldn't handle piles of homework.

C.Because the coming exam was of great importance.

D.Because he didn't intend to spend so much money on a play.

【3】How did the author feel about his financial insufficiency?

A.Fascinated.

B.Embarrassed.

C.Content.

D.Worried.

【4】How is the text developed?

A.By listing examples.

B.By making comparisons.

C.By giving a definition.

D.By providing evidence.

23、Student Drought Bits Smaller Universities

As Loyola University New Orleans is getting ready for fall classes next month, the 101-year-old university faces a crisis: 【1】 ‘It was a pretty big hit,’ said Mare K. Manganaro, vice president for academic affairs.

Now, along with preparing for fall courses, Loyola officials are worried about how to plug a S9.5 million shortfall in the school’s S163 million annual budget, the result of 221 fewer freshmen than expected.

Since last May, the 5,000-student private college has imposed a hiring freeze, reduced faculty hours, hired outside firms to revamp its marketing and financial aid,and is setting up early-retirement packages for some faculty. If that isn’t sufficient to fill the gap, the school may tap its S275 million endowment. 【2】.

Many in higher education believe this might be a trend for smaller colleges. After decades of growth, college enrollment nationally dropped 2.3% this spring, compared with spring 2012 according to a report released by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. 【3】 The number of U.S. high-school graduates peaked at 3.4 million in 2010-2011 and is projected to fall to 3.2 million by 2013-14, according to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.

Loyola has set up numerous committees to figure out what went wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again. School officials were shocked this year by the low fall turnout. The vice president for enrollment management resigned abruptly in June. Loyola officials believe a reason for the decline was a reduction in financial aid it offered to the incoming class off its $35,504 tuition, from an average discount of 58% last year to about 55% this fall.

【4】. I think the market answered back on that” said Mr. Manganaro.

A.We tried to moderate that discount rate down somewhat.

B.There will be 25% fewer freshmen than the school had banked on.

C.The decline is supposed to continue.

D.Fewer students will choose the school due to its high tuition.

E.Layoffs are ‘a last option’, a spokeswoman sad.

F.However the number of students is assumed to return to normal.

24、Access to green spaces has been found to have many benefits for both physical and mental health and wellbeing. As is reported recently, nearby green areas have been shown to improve children’s respiratory(呼吸的)health and greatly improve the quality of life in large cities.

Researchers from the University of Illinois College conducted a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology to examine any potential(潜在的)links between greenness and academic achievement for schools with mostly low income students. Therefore, 318 public elementary schools in Chicago were included in the study.

“The goal was to see if the greenness-academic achievement relationship holds for poor, urban schools because that’s where it matters,” said Ming Kuo, the leader of the research. “That’s where educators and policymakers are desperately trying to find ways to help kids reach their potential.”

High-resolution aerial imagery technology was used to quantify(量化)tree and grass cover for each School. The researchers then compared greenness to the academic performance for the schools using standardized test scores for math and reading.

The researchers found that tree cover was a reliable predictor of academic performance, both for reading and math. The more trees there were, the better the standardized test scores were. Other things like the number of students in each classroom, gender ratios(性别比),and the number of bilingual(双语的)students had no influence on test scores or academic performance.

The results showed that having trees outside of a school affected academic performance and that schools considered the most disadvantaged had half the number of trees as the least disadvantaged schools. While the study does not prove any cause and effect between tree cover and academic performance, it does suggest that simply planting more trees in schoolyards across disadvantaged districts may improve academic performance.

“Early math skills are one of the best predictors of later success, not just in math, but in school,” said Kuo. “So what we have here is a very exciting clue that maybe simply greening—planting trees in schoolyards—could potentially have a significant effect on math achievement and school success down the line for these kids.”

【1】Why were the schools in Chicago chosen for the study?

A.They were mostly located in remote areas.

B.Their students had no access to green spaces.

C.They had students with physical or mental problems.

D.The majority of their students were from poor families.

【2】What affected the students’ reading scores most in the study?

A.The area of green spaces.

B.Their math skills.

C.Their native language.

D.The size of the class.

【3】Which of the following does Ming Kuo agree with?

A.It’s urgent to reduce the number of students in a class.

B.It’s unwise to connect greenness with academic success.

C.Kids with better math scores enjoy greater success at school.

D.Schools in Chicago should increase their green cover by half.

【4】What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Many factors can affect students’ test scores.

B.Trees help improve students’ school performance.

C.More greenness at school benefits children’s health.

D.It’s possible to predict students’ success in later life.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.
